First, we are making public the first version of MGB, an IDL code that allows the user to compare oberved spectra to a grid of spectroscopic standards to measure spectral types, luminosity classes, rotation indexes, and spectral qualifiers. Second, we present the associated grid of standard stars for the spectral types O2 to O9.7, with several improvements over the original GOSSS grid of Sota et al. (2011). Third, we present a list of egregious classification errors in SIMBAD: stars that are or have been listed there as being of O type but that in reality are late-type stars.

We present a multi-filter HST/WFPC2 UV-optical study of the Hourglass region in M8. We have extracted the stellar photometry of the sources in the area and obtained the separations and position angles of the Herschel 36 multiple system: for Herschel 36 D we detect a possible orbital motion between 1995 and 2009. We have combined our data with archival IUE spectroscopy and measured the Herschel 36 extinction law, obtaining a different result from that of Cardelli et al. (1989) due to the improvement in the quality of the optical-NIR data, in agreement with the results of Maíz Apellániz et al. (2014). A large fraction of the UV flux around Herschel 36 arises from the Hourglass and not directly from the star itself. In the UV the Hourglass appears to act as a reflection nebula located behind Herschel 36 along the line of sight. Finally, we also detect three new Herbig-Haro objects and the possible anisotropic expansion of the Hourglass Nebula.

Context: Massive stars are extremely important for the evolution of the galaxies; there are large gaps in our understanding of their properties and formation, however, mainly because they evolve rapidly, are rare, and distant. It may well be that almost all massive stars are born as triples or higher multiples, but their large distances require very high angular resolution to directly detect the companions at milliarcsecond scales.
Aims: Herschel36 is a young massive system located at 1.3 kpc. It has a combined smallest predicted mass of 45 M_sun. Multi-epoch spectroscopic data suggest the existence of at least three gravitationally bound components. Two of them, system Ab, are tightly bound in a spectroscopic binary, and the third one, component Aa, orbits in a wider orbit. Our aim was to image and obtain astrometric and photometric measurements of components Aa and Ab using, for the first time, long-baseline optical interferometry to further constrain its nature.
Methods: We observed Herschel 36 with the near-infrared instrument AMBER attached to the ESO VLT Interferometer, which provides an angular resolution of approx. 2 mas. We used the code BSMEM to perform the interferometric image reconstruction. We fitted the interferometric observables using proprietary IDL routines and the code LitPro.
Results: We imaged the Aa+Ab components of Herschel 36 in H and K filters. Component Ab is located at a projected distance of 1.81 mas, at a position angle of approx. 222 deg. east of north, the flux ratio between components Aa and Ab is close to one. The small measured angular separation indicates that system Ab and Ab may be approaching the periastron of their orbits. These results, only achievable with long-baseline near-infrared interferometry, constitute the first step toward a thorough understanding of this massive triple system.

Mechanism design is the study of algorithm design in which the inputs to the algorithm are controlled by strategic agents, who must be incentivized to faithfully report them. Unlike typical programmatic properties, it is not sufficient for algorithms to merely satisfy the property---incentive properties are only useful if the strategic agents also believe this fact.
Verification is an attractive way to convince agents that the incentive properties actually hold, but mechanism design poses several unique challenges: interesting properties can be sophisticated relational properties of probabilistic computations involving expected values, and mechanisms may rely on other probabilistic properties, like differential privacy, to achieve their goals.
We introduce a relational refinement type system, called $\mathsf{HOARe}^2$, for verifying mechanism design and differential privacy. We show that $\mathsf{HOARe}^2$ is sound w.r.t. a denotational semantics, and correctly models $(ε,δ)$-differential privacy; moreover, we show that it subsumes DFuzz, an existing linear dependent type system for differential privacy. Finally, we develop an SMT-based implementation of $\mathsf{HOARe}^2$ and use it to verify challenging examples of mechanism design, including auctions and aggregative games, and new proposed examples from differential privacy.

The structure of the Borromean nucleus $^9$Be ($α+α+n$) is addressed within a three-body approach using the analytical transformed harmonic oscillator method. The three-body formalism provides an accurate description of the radiative capture reaction rate for the entire temperature range relevant in Astrophysics. At high temperatures, results match the calculations based on two-step sequential processes. At low temperatures, where the particles have no access to intermediate two-body resonances, the three-body direct capture leads to reaction rates larger than the sequential processes. These results support the reliability of the method for systems with several charged particles.

Differential privacy is a rigorous, worst-case notion of privacy-preserving computation. Informally, a probabilistic program is differentially private if the participation of a single individual in the input database has a limited effect on the program's distribution on outputs. More technically, differential privacy is a quantitative 2-safety property that bounds the distance between the output distributions of a probabilistic program on adjacent inputs. Like many 2-safety properties, differential privacy lies outside the scope of traditional verification techniques. Existing approaches to enforce privacy are based on intricate, non-conventional type systems, or customized relational logics. These approaches are difficult to implement and often cumbersome to use.
We present an alternative approach that verifies differential privacy by standard, non-relational reasoning on non-probabilistic programs. Our approach transforms a probabilistic program into a non-probabilistic program which simulates two executions of the original program. We prove that if the target program is correct with respect to a Hoare specification, then the original probabilistic program is differentially private. We provide a variety of examples from the differential privacy literature to demonstrate the utility of our approach. Finally, we compare our approach with existing verification techniques for privacy.

The ground state and spectral properties of Bose gases in double-well potentials are studied in two different scenarios: i) an interacting atomic Bose gas, and ii) a mixture of an atomic gas interacting with diatomic molecules. A ground state second-order quantum phase transition (QPT) is observed in both scenarios. For large attractive values of the atom-atom interaction, the ground-state is degenerate. For repulsive and small attractive interaction, the ground-state is not degenerate and is well approximated by a boson coherent state. Both systems depict an excited state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). For the mixed atom-molecule system the critical point of the ESQPT displays a discontinuity in the first derivative of the density of states.

Intensive development of urban systems creates a number of challenges for urban planners and policy makers in order to maintain sustainable growth. Running efficient urban policies requires meaningful urban metrics, which could quantify important urban characteristics including various aspects of an actual human behavior. Since a city size is known to have a major, yet often nonlinear, impact on the human activity, it also becomes important to develop scale-free metrics that capture qualitative city properties, beyond the effects of scale. Recent availability of extensive datasets created by human activity involving digital technologies creates new opportunities in this area. In this paper we propose a novel approach of city scoring and classification based on quantitative scale-free metrics related to economic activity of city residents, as well as domestic and foreign visitors. It is demonstrated on the example of Spain, but the proposed methodology is of a general character. We employ a new source of large-scale ubiquitous data, which consists of anonymized countrywide records of bank card transactions collected by one of the largest Spanish banks. Different aspects of the classification reveal important properties of Spanish cities, which significantly complement the pattern that might be discovered with the official socioeconomic statistics.

We present a practical, differentially private algorithm for answering a large number of queries on high dimensional datasets. Like all algorithms for this task, ours necessarily has worst-case complexity exponential in the dimension of the data. However, our algorithm packages the computationally hard step into a concisely defined integer program, which can be solved non-privately using standard solvers. We prove accuracy and privacy theorems for our algorithm, and then demonstrate experimentally that our algorithm performs well in practice. For example, our algorithm can efficiently and accurately answer millions of queries on the Netflix dataset, which has over 17,000 attributes; this is an improvement on the state of the art by multiple orders of magnitude.

One-neutron halo nuclei, composed by a weakly-bound particle coupled to a core nucleus, are studied within a particle-plus-core model. A semi-microscopic method to generate the two-body Hamiltonian of such a system, including core excitation, is proposed. The method consists in generating the spin-independent part of the valence-core interaction using a single-folding procedure, convoluting a realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction with the core transition densities. The latter are calculated with the Antisymetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) method. The prescription is applied to the well known halo nucleus, $^{11}$Be, as a test case. The results show an important predictive power that opens a door to the understanding of other lesser known halo nuclei. In order to show the potential usefulness of the method, it is applied to analyze the structure of $^{19}$C.

We present the second installment of GOSSS, a massive spectroscopic survey of Galactic O stars, based on new homogeneous, high signal-to-noise ratio, R ~ 2500 digital observations from both hemispheres selected from the Galactic O-Star Catalog (GOSC). In this paper we include bright stars and other objects drawn mostly from the first version of GOSC, all of them south of delta = -20 degrees, for a total number of 258 O stars. We also revise the northern sample of paper I to provide the full list of spectroscopically classified Galactic O stars complete to B = 8, bringing the total number of published GOSSS stars to 448. Extensive sequences of exceptional objects are given, including the early Of/WN, O Iafpe, Ofc, ON/OC, Onfp, Of?p, and Oe types, as well as double/triple-lined spectroscopic binaries. The new spectral subtype O9.2 is also discussed. The magnitude and spatial distributions of the observed sample are analyzed. We also present new results from OWN, a multi-epoch high-resolution spectroscopic survey coordinated with GOSSS that is assembling the largest sample of Galactic spectroscopic massive binaries ever attained. The OWN data combined with additional information on spectroscopic and visual binaries from the literature indicate that only a very small fraction (if any) of the stars with masses above 15-20 M_Sol are born as single systems. In the future we will publish the rest of the GOSSS survey, which is expected to include over 1000 Galactic O stars.

The effect of core excitation in the elastic scattering and breakup of a two-body halo nucleus on a stable target nucleus is studied. The structure of the weakly-bound projectile is described in the weak-coupling limit, assuming a particle-rotor model. The eigenfunctions and the associated eigenvalues are obtained by diagonalizing this Hamiltonian in a square-integrable basis (pseudo-states). For the radial coordinate between the particle and the core, a transformed harmonic oscillator (THO) basis is used. For the reaction dynamics, an extension of the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) method, which takes into account dynamic core excitation and deexcitation due to the presence of non-central parts in the core-target interaction, is adapted to be used along with a pseudo-states (PS) basis.

The model consists of open-strings interacting through a Kalb-Ramond field in four dimensions. The geometric representation proposed uses lines and surfaces that can be interpreted as an extension of the picture of Faraday's lines of classical electromagnetism. This representation results to be consistent, provided the coupling constant (the "charge" of the string) is quantized. The Schrödinger equation in this representation is also presented.

To test the goodness of the formalism and establish its applicability and limitations, the capture reaction rate for the nucleosynthesis of the Borromean nucleus 6He (4He + n + n) is addressed. Results are compared with previous publications and with calculations based on actual three-body continuum wave functions, which can be generated for this simple case. We present a new free library for Constraint Logic Programming over Finite Domains, included with the Ciao Prolog system. The library is entirely written in Prolog, leveraging on Ciao's module system and code transformation capabilities in order to achieve a highly modular design without compromising performance. We describe the interface, implementation, and design rationale of each modular component.
The library meets several design goals: a high level of modularity, allowing the individual components to be replaced by different versions; high-efficiency, being competitive with other FD implementations; a glass-box approach, so the user can specify new constraints at different levels; and a Prolog implementation, in order to ease the integration with Ciao's code analysis components.
The core is built upon two small libraries which implement integer ranges and closures. On top of that, a finite domain variable datatype is defined, taking care of constraint reexecution depending on range changes. These three libraries form what we call the FD kernel of the library.
This FD kernel is used in turn to implement several higher-level finite domain constraints, specified using indexicals. Together with a labeling module this layer forms what we name \emph{the FD solver}. A final level integrates the clp(FD) paradigm with our FD solver. This is achieved using attributed variables and a compiler from the clp(FD) language to the set of constraints provided by the solver.
It should be noted that the user of the library is encouraged to work in any of those levels as seen convenient: from writing a new range module to enriching the set of FD constraints by writing new indexicals.

We are carrying out a bibliographic compilation of near-infrared (NIR)(0.7-5.0 um) spectroscopic studies available for stars in the Galactic O Star Catalog (GOSC, Maíz Apellániz et al. 2004). This compilation allows us to quantify the precise degree of knowledge about NIR spectral information for GOSC sources, such as band coverage, spectral resolution, equivalent-width measurements, etc. This bibliographic compilation has a clear next step toward the development of a new catalog of O-type stars observed only in the NIR, which will be annexed to the GOSC. In this poster paper we present preliminary results derived from a set of different attributes extracted from the retrieved papers.

The chemical influence in the phase separation phenomenon that occurs in perovskite manganites is discussed by means of ab initio calculations. Supercells have been used to simulate a phase separated state, that occurs at Ca concentrations close to the localized to itinerant crossover. We have first considered a model with two types of magnetic ordering coexisting within the same compound. This is not stable. However, a non-isotropic distribution of chemical dopants is found to be the ground state. This leads to regions in the system with different effective concentrations, that would always accompany the magnetic phase separation at the same nanometric scale, with hole-rich regions being more ferromagnetic in character and hole-poor regions being in the antiferromagnetic region of the phase diagram, as long as the system is close to a phase crossover.

In this work, we describe the general idea, the implementation of the survey, and the first preliminary results of some of the observed clusters. This monitoring program is complementary to the Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV), as the brightest sources observed in NIP of Stars are saturated in VVV.

The quantum description of a particle moving in a deformed potential is investigated. A pseudostate (PS) basis is used to represent the states of the composite system. This PS basis is obtained by diagonalizing the system Hamiltonian in a family of square integrable functions. In this work the Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) functions, obtained from the solutions of the Harmonic Oscillator using a Local Scale Transformation (LST), are used. The proposed method is applied to the 11Be nucleus, treated in a two-body model (10Be+n). Both structure and reaction observables have been studied.
Wavefunctions and energies obtained for the bound states and some low-lying resonances are compared with those obtained by direct integration of the Schroedinger equation. The dipole and quadrupole electric transition probabilities for the low-energy continuum have been calculated in the THO basis, and compared with the exact distributions obtained with the scattering states. Finally, the method is applied to describe the 11Be states in the Coulomb breakup of 11Be+208Pb at 69 MeV/nucleon. The energy and angular distributions of the exclusive breakup have been calculated using the Equivalent Photon Method, including both E1 and E2 contributions. The calculated distributions are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data from RIKEN [Phys. Rev. C70, 054606]. At the very forward angles, the cross section is completely dominated by the dipole couplings.

We present a unified analysis of the self-dual, second order, topologically massive and the recently introduced fourth order models of massive gravity in 3D. We show that there is a family of first order actions which interpolate between these different single excitation models. We show how the master actions are related by duality transformation. We construct by the same method the master action which relates the fourth order new massive model with two excitations and the usual second order model with Fierz-Pauli mass. We show that the more general model obtained by adding a Chern-Simons term to the new massive model is equivalent off shell to the second order spontaneously broken linearized massive gravity.

The ESO Public Survey VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) started in 2010. VVV targets 562 sq. deg in the Galactic bulge and an adjacent plane region and is expected to run for ~5 years. In this paper we describe the progress of the survey observations in the first observing season, the observing strategy and quality of the data obtained. The observations are carried out on the 4-m VISTA telescope in the ZYJHKs filters. In addition to the multi-band imaging the variability monitoring campaign in the Ks filter has started. Data reduction is carried out using the pipeline at the Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit. The photometric and astrometric calibration is performed via the numerous 2MASS sources observed in each pointing. The first data release contains the aperture photometry and astrometric catalogues for 348 individual pointings in the ZYJHKs filters taken in the 2010 observing season. The typical image quality is ~0.9-1.0". The stringent photometric and image quality requirements of the survey are satisfied in 100% of the JHKs images in the disk area and 90% of the JHKs images in the bulge area. The completeness in the Z and Y images is 84% in the disk, and 40% in the bulge. The first season catalogues contain 1.28x10^8 stellar sources in the bulge and 1.68x10^8 in the disk area detected in at least one of the photometric bands. The combined, multi-band catalogues contain more than 1.63x10^8 stellar sources. About 10% of these are double detections due to overlap** adjacent pointings. These overlap** multiple detections are used to characterise the quality of the data. The images in the JHKs bands extend typically ~4 mag deeper than 2MASS. The magnitude limit and photometric quality depend strongly on crowding in the inner Galactic regions. The astrometry for Ks=15-18 mag has rms ~35-175 mas.

Hepatic encephalopathy is a neurological complication that affects attention and memory. Experimental animal models have been used to study hepatic Encephalopathy, the most frequent being the portacaval shunt. In order to determine learning impairment and brain functional alterations in this model, we assessed reversal learning and neural metabolic activity in a PCS rat model. Portacaval shunt and sham-operated rats were tested for reversal learning in the Morris water maze. Brains were processed for cytochrome oxidase histochemistry. The portacaval shunt group presents reversal learning impairment and cytochrome oxidase activity reduction in prefrontal cortex, ventral tegmental area and accumbens shell nucleus. These results suggest that this model of portosystemic hepatic encephalopathy shows learning impairment that could be linked to dysfunction in neural activity in the prefrontal cortex and regions involved in motivated behavior.

In particular, we have discovered two "clones" (HD 102415 and HD 117490) of one of the most rapidly rotating O stars previously known (HD 191423, "Howarth's Star"). We compare the locations of these objects in the theoretical HR Diagram to those of slowly rotating ON dwarfs and supergiants. All ON giants known to date are rapid rotators, whereas no ON dwarf or supergiant is; but all ON stars are small fractions of their respective spectral-type/luminosity-class/rotational subcategories. The ONn giants, displaying both substantial processed material and high rotation at an intermediate evolutionary stage, may provide significant information about the development of those properties. They may have preserved high initial rotational velocities or been spun up by TAMS core contraction; but alternatively and perhaps more likely, they may be products of binary mass transfer. At least some of them are also runaway stars.

The periodic spectroscopic events in eta Carinae are now well established and occur near the periastron passage of two massive stars in a very eccentric orbit. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the variations of different spectral features, such as an eclipse by the wind-wind collision boundary, a shell ejection from the primary star or accretion of its wind onto the secondary. All of them have problems explaining all the observed phenomena. To better understand the nature of the cyclic events, we performed a dense monitoring of eta Carinae with 5 Southern telescopes during the 2009 low excitation event, resulting in a set of data of unprecedented quality and sampling. The intrinsic luminosity of the He II 4686 emission line (L~310 Lsun) just before periastron reveals the presence of a very luminous transient source of extreme UV radiation emitted in the wind-wind collision (WWC) region. Clumps in the primary's wind probably explain the flare-like behavior of both the X-ray and He II 4686 light-curves. After a short-lived minimum, He II 4686 emission rises again to a ne

An extension of the Consistent-Q formalism for the Interacting Boson Model that includes the cubic QxQxQ term is proposed. The potential energy surface for the cubic quadrupole interaction is explicitly calculated within the coherent state formalism using the complete chi-dependent expression for the quadrupole operator. The Q-cubic term is found to depend on the asymmetry deformation parameter gamma as a linear combination of cos(3gamma) and cos^2(3γ) terms, thereby allowing for triaxiality. The phase diagram of the model in the large N limit is explored, it is described the order of the phase transition surfaces that define the phase diagram, and moreover, the possible nuclear equilibrium shapes are established. It is found that, contrary to expectations, there is only a very tiny region of triaxiality in the model, and that the transition from prolate to oblate shapes is so fast that, in most cases, the onset of triaxiality might go unnoticed.

(2004) and Sota et al. (2008). The spectral classification system is rediscussed and a new atlas is presented, which supersedes previous versions. Extensive sequences of exceptional objects are given, including types Ofc, ON/OC, Onfp, Of?p, Oe, and double-lined spectroscopic binaries. The remaining normal spectra bring this first sample to 184 stars, which is close to complete to B=8 and north of delta = -20 and includes all of the northern objects in Maíz Apellániz et al. (2004) that are still classified as O stars. The systematic and random accuracies of these classifications are substantially higher than previously attainable, because of the quality, quantity, and homogeneity of the data and analysis procedures. These results will enhance subsequent investigations in Galactic astronomy and stellar astrophysics. In the future we will publish the rest of the survey, beginning with a second paper that will include most of the southern stars in Maíz Apellániz et al. (2004).

We use the biggest Galactic O-star blue-violet spectroscopic sample ever (GOSSS, see contribution by Maíz Apellániz at this meeting). This sample allows a new insight on this topic because of the adequacy of O-star spectra, the sample number (700 and increasing, 400 used here), and their distribution in the MW disk. We confirm the high correlation coefficients between different DIBs and E(B - V), though the detailed behavior of each case shows small differences. We also detect a moderately low correlation coefficient between Ca II λ3934 (Ca K) and E(B - V) with a peculiar spatial distribution that we ascribe to the relationship between line saturation and velocity profiles for Ca II λ3934.

The ability of a recently developed square-integrable discrete basis to represent the properties of the continuum of a two-body system is investigated. The basis is obtained performing a simple analytic local scale transformation to the harmonic oscillator basis. Scattering phase-shifts and the electric transition probabilities B(E1) and B(E2) have been evaluated for several potentials using the proposed basis. Both quantities are found to be in excellent agreement with the exact values calculated from the true scattering states. The basis has been applied to describe the projectile continuum in the 6He scattering by 12C and 208Pb targets at 240 MeV/nucleon and the 11Be scattering by 12C at 67 MeV/nucleon. The calculated breakup differential cross sections are found to be in very good agreement with the available experimental data for these reactions.

This work is the natural extension of the work presented in [1] for the E(5)-models. For that purpose, a quite general one- and two-body IBM Hamiltonian is used and a numerical fit to the different X(5)-models energies is performed, later on the obtained wave functions are used to calculate B(E2) transition rates. It is shown that within the IBM one can reproduce well the results for energies and B(E2) transition rates obtained with all these X(5)-models, although the agreement is not so impressive as for the E(5)-models. From the fitted IBM parameters the corresponding energy surface can be extracted and it is obtained that, surprisingly, only the X(5) case corresponds in the moderate large N limit to an energy surface very close to the one expected for a critical point, while the rest of models seat a little farther.

We have performed collinear and non collinear calculations on neutral Bi4Mn, and collinear ones on ionized Bi4Mn with charges +1 and -1 to find out why theoretical calculations will not predict the magnetic state found in the experiment. We have used the density functional theory to find a fit between the theoretical prediction of the magnetic moment with the experimental value. Our calculations have consisted in a structure search of local energy minima, and then a search of the magnetic lowest energy state for each resulting isomer. The geometry optimization found 3 local minima whose fundamental state is the doublet spin state, which could not be found in previous theoretical works, but they are higher in energy than the lowest-lying isomer by approximately 1.75 eV. This magnetic state could help understand the experiment. Calculations of non-collinear magnetic states for the Bi4Mn do not lower the total magnetic moment. We conclude arguing how the 3 isomers with doublet state could actually be the ones measured in the experiment.

On the basis of an extensive new spectroscopic survey of Galactic O stars, we introduce the Ofc category, which consists of normal spectra with C III λ\lambda4647-4650-4652 emission lines of comparable intensity to those of the Of defining lines N III λ\lambda4634-4640-4642. The former feature is strongly peaked to spectral type O5, at all luminosity classes, but preferentially in some associations or clusters and not others. The relationships of this phenomenon to the selective C III \lambda5696 emission throughout the normal Of domain, and to the peculiar, variable Of?p category, for which strong C III λ\lambda4647-4650-4652 emission is a defining characteristic, are discussed. Magnetic fields have recently been detected on two members of the latter category. We also present two new extreme Of?p stars, NGC 1624-2 and CPD -28^{\circ}2561, bringing the number known in the Galaxy to five. Modeling of the behavior of these spectral features can be expected to better define the physical parameters of both normal and peculiar objects, as well as the atomic physics involved.

We present the analysis of high-resolution optical spectroscopic observations of the zero-age main-sequence O star Herschel 36 spanning six years. This star is definitely a multiple system, with at least three components detected in its spectrum. Based on our radial-velocity (RV) study, we propose a picture of a close massive binary and a more distant companion, most probably in wide orbit about each other. The orbital solution for the binary, whose components we identify as O9 V and B0.5 V, is characterized by a period of 1.5415 +/- 0.0006 days. With a spectral type O7.5 V, the third body is the most luminous component of the system and also presents RV variations with a period close to 498 days. Some possible hypotheses to explain the variability are briefly addressed and further observations are suggested.

The decoherence induced on a single qubit by its interaction with the environment is studied. The environment is modelled as a scalar two-level boson system that can go through either first order or continuous excited state quantum phase transitions, depending on the values of the control parameters. A mean field method based on the Tamm-Damkoff approximation is worked out in order to understand the observed behaviour of the decoherence. Only the continuous excited state phase transition produces a noticeable effect in the decoherence of the qubit. This is maximal when the system-environment coupling brings the environment to the critical point for the continuous phase transition. In this situation, the decoherence factor (or the fidelity) goes to zero with a finite size scaling power law.

We explore how the decoherence process is affected by the presence of quantum phase transitions in the environment. We conclude that the dynamics of the qubit changes dramatically when the environment passes through a continuous excited state quantum phase transition. If the system-environment coupling energy equals the energy at which the environment has a critical behavior, the decoherence induced on the qubit is maximal and the fidelity tends to zero with finite size scaling obeying a power-law.

We describe the public ESO near-IR variability survey (VVV) scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. The survey will take 1929 hours of observations with the 4-metre VISTA telescope during five years (2010-2014), covering ~10^9 point sources across an area of 520 deg^2, including 33 known globular clusters and ~350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five passbands (0.9-2.5 microns) and a catalogue of more than 10^6 variable point sources. Unlike single-epoch surveys that, in most cases, only produce 2-D maps, the VVV variable star survey will enable the construction of a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars, and Cepheids. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, Spitzer, HST, Chandra, INTEGRAL, WISE, Fermi LAT, XMM-Newton, GAIA and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. This public survey will provide data available to the whole community and therefore will enable further studies of the history of the Milky Way, its globular cluster evolution, and the population census of the Galactic Bulge and center, as well as the investigations of the star forming regions in the disk. The combined variable star catalogues will have important implications for theoretical investigations of pulsation properties of stars.

The calculated magnetic moments generally agree with the reported experimental data. An equation for calculating the magnetic moments of the Co-Mn alloy clusters has been derived to correct the deviations predicted by the rigid-band model and the virtual bound states approximation. A strategy is proposed to obtain the ground-state structures of the Co-Mn clusters and it was also put to the test of the experiment.

The development of a continuum-bins scheme of discretization for three-body projectiles is necessary for studies of reactions of Borromean nuclei such as 6He within the continuum-discretized coupled-channels approach. Such a procedure, for constructing bin states on selected continuum energy intervals, is formulated and applied for the first time to reactions of a three-body projectile. The continuum representation uses the eigenchannel expansion of the three-body S-matrix. The method is applied to the challenging case of the 6He + 208Pb reaction at 22 MeV, where an accurate treatment of both the Coulomb and the nuclear interactions with the target is necessary.

Electronic structure calculations on the low dimensional spin-1/2 compound TiOCl were performed at several pressures in the orthorhombic phase, finding that the structure is quasi-one-dimensional. The Ti3+ (d1) ions have one t2g orbital occupied (dyz) with a large hop** integral along the b direction of the crystal. The most important magnetic coupling is Ti-Ti along the b axis. The transition temperature (Tc) has a linear evolution with pressure, and at about 10 GPa this Tc is close to room temperature, leading to a room temperature spin-Peierls insulator-insulator transition, with an important reduction of the charge gap in agreement with the experiment. On the high-pressure monoclinic phase, TiOCl presents two possible dimerized structures, with a long or short dimerization. Long dimerized state occurs above 15 GPa, and below this pressure the short dimerized structure is the more stable phase.

The connections between the $E(5)-$models (the original E(5) using an infinite square well, $E(5)-β^4$, $E(5)-β^6$ and $E(5)-β^8$), based on particular solutions of the geometrical Bohr Hamiltonian with $γ$-unstable potentials, and the interacting boson model (IBM) are explored. For that purpose, the general IBM Hamiltonian for the $U(5)-O(6)$ transition line is used and a numerical fit to the different $E(5)-$models energies is performed. It is shown that within the IBM one can reproduce very well all these $E(5)-$models. The agreement is the best for $E(5)-β^4$ and reduces when passing through $E(5)-β^6$, $E(5)-β^8$ and E(5), where the worst agreement is obtained (although still very good for a restricted set of lowest lying states). The fitted IBM Hamiltonians correspond to energy surfaces close to those expected for the critical point.
