The $A$MnO$_{2}$ delafossites ($A$=Na, Cu), are model frustrated antiferromagnets, with triangular layers of Mn$^{3+}$~spins. At low temperatures ($T_{N}$=65 K), a $C2/m \rightarrow P\overline{1}$ transition is found in CuMnO$_2$, which breaks frustration and establishes magnetic order. In contrast to this clean transition, $A$=Na only shows short-range distortions at $T_N$. Here we report a systematic crystallographic, spectroscopic, and theoretical investigation of CuMnO$_2$. We show that, even in stoichiometric samples, non-zero anisotropic Cu displacements co-exist with magnetic order. Using X-ray/neutron diffraction and Raman scattering, we show that high pressures acts to decouple these degrees of freedom. This manifests as an isostuctural phase transition at $\sim$10 GPa, with a reversible collapse of the $c$-axis. This is shown to be the high pressure analog of the $c$-axis negative thermal expansion seen at ambient pressure. DFT simulations confirm that dynamical instabilities of the Cu$^{+}$ cations and edge-shared MnO$_{6}$ layers are intertwined at ambient pressure. However, high pressure selectively activates the former, before an eventual predicted re-emergence of magnetism at the highest pressures. Our results show that the lattice dynamics and local structure of CuMnO$_2$ are quantitatively different to non-magnetic Cu delafossites, and raise questions about the role of intrinsic inhomogeniety in frustrated antiferromagnets.

The Ising triangular lattice remains the classic test-case for frustrated magnetism. Here we report neutron scattering measurements of short range magnetic order in CuMnO$_2$, which consists of a distorted lattice of Mn$^{3+}$ spins with single-ion anisotropy. Physical property measurements on CuMnO$_2$ are consistent with 1D correlations caused by anisotropic orbital occupation. However the diffuse magnetic neutron scattering seen in powder measurements has previously been fitted by 2D Warren-type correlations. Using neutron spectroscopy, we show that paramagnetic fluctuations persist up to $\sim$25 meV above TN= 65 K. This is comparable to the incident energy of typical diffractometers, and results in a smearing of the energy integrated signal, which hence cannot be analysed in the quasi-static approximation. We use low energy XYZ polarised neutron scattering to extract the purely magnetic (quasi)-static signal. This is fitted by reverse Monte Carlo analysis, which reveals that two directions in the triangular layers are perfectly frustrated in the classical spin-liquid phase at 75 K. Strong antiferromagnetic correlations are only found along the b-axis, and our results hence unify the pictures seen by neutron scattering and macroscopic physical property measurements.

Magnetic order and excitations in multiferroic DyMnO3 were studied by neutron scattering experiments using a single crystal prepared with enriched 162Dy isotope. The ordering of Mn moments exhibits pronounced hysteresis arising from the interplay between Mn and Dy magnetism which possesses a strong impact on the ferroelectric polarization. The magnon dispersion resembles that reported for TbMnO3. We identify the excitations at the magnetic zone center and near the zone boundary in the b direction, which can possess electromagnon character. The lowest frequency of the zone-center magnons is in good agreement with a signal in a recent optical measurement so that this mode can be identified as the electromagnon coupled by the same Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction as the static multiferroic phase.

The honeycomb lattice material Li2RuO3 undergoes a dimerization of Ru4+ cations on cooling below 270C, where the magnetic susceptibility vanishes. We use density functional theory calculations to show that this reflects the formation of a 'valence bond crystal', with a strong bond disproportionation. On warming, x-ray diffraction shows that discrete three-fold symmetry is regained on average, and the dimerization apparently disappears. In contrast, local structural measurements using high-energy x-rays, show that disordered dimers survive at the nanoscale up to at least 650C. The high temperature phase of Li2RuO3 is thus an example of a valence bond liquid, where thermal fluctuations drive resonance between different dimer coverages, a classic analogue of the resonating valence bond state often discussed in connection with high T$_c$ cuprates.

We show that the valence electrons of Ba3NaRu2O9, which has a quasi-molecular structure, completely crystallize below 210 K. Using an extended Hubbard model, we show that the charge ordering instability results from long-range Coulomb interactions. However, orbital ordering, metal-metal bonding and formation of a partial spin gap enforce the magnitude of the charge separation. The striped charge order and frustrated hcp lattice of Ru2O9 dimers lead to competition with a quasi-degenerate charge-melted phase under photo-excitation at low temperature. Our results establish a broad class of simple metal oxides as models for emergent phenomena at the border between the molecular and solid states.

We study spin liquid in the frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnet CoAl2O4 by means of single crystal neutron scattering in zero and applied magnetic field. The magnetically ordered phase appearing below TN=8 K remains nonconventional down to 1.5 K. The magnetic Bragg peaks at the q=0 positions remain broad and their profiles have strong Lorentzian contribution. Additionally, they are connected by weak diffuse streaks along the <111> directions. These observations are explained within the spiral spin liquid model as short-range magnetic correlations of spirals populated at these finite temperatures, as the energy minimum around q=0 is flat and the energy of excited states with q=(111) is low. The agreement is only qualitative, leading us to suspect that microstructure effects are also important. Magnetic field significantly perturbs spin correlations. The 1.5 K static magnetic moment increases from 1.58 mB/Co at zero field to 2.08 mB/Co at 10 T, while the magnetic peaks, being still broad, acquire almost Gaussian profile. Spin excitations are rather conventional spin waves at zero field, resulting in the exchange parameters J1=0.92(1) meV, J2=0.101(2) meV and the anisotropy term D=-0.0089(2) meV for CoAl2O4. The application of a magnetic field leads to a pronounced broadening of the excitations at the zone center, which at 10 T appear gapless and nearly featureless.

The control of domains in ferroic devices lies at the heart of their potential for technological applications. Multiferroic materials offer another level of complexity as domains can be either or both of a ferroelectric and magnetic nature. Here we report the discovery of a novel magnetic state in the orthoferrite TbFeO3 using neutron diffraction under an applied magnetic field. This state has a very long incommensurate period ranging from 340 Angstrom at 3K to 2700 Angstrom at the lowest temperatures and exhibits an anomalously large number of higher-order harmonics, allowing us to identify it with the periodic array of sharp domain walls of Tb spins separated by many lattice constants. The Tb domain walls interact by exchanging spin waves propagating through the Fe magnetic sublattice. The resulting Yukawa-like force, familiar from particle physics, has a finite range that determines the period of the incommensurate state.

α-CaCr2O4 is a distorted triangular antiferromagnet. The magnetic Cr3+ ions which have spin-3/2 and interact with their nearest neighbors via Heisenberg direct exchange interactions, develop long-range magnetic order below T_N=42.6 K. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction reveal a helical magnetic structure with ordering wavevector k=(0,~1/3,0) and angles close to 120° between neighboring spins. Spherical neutron polarimetry unambiguously proves that the spins lie in the ac plane perpendicular to k. The magnetic structure is therefore that expected for an ideal triangular antiferromagnet where all nearest neighbor interactions are equal, in spite of the fact that α-CaCr2O4 is distorted with two inequivalent Cr3+ ions and four different nearest neighbor interactions. By simulating the magnetic order as a function of these four interactions it is found that the special pattern of interactions in α-CaCr2O4 stabilizes 120° helical order for a large range of exchange interactions.

On the other hand, even more recent transport measurements on untwinned samples show near isotropy of the resistivity in the $ab$ plane, with slightly larger conductivity along a (and not b). We show that in fact both sets of data are consistent with the calculated ab initio Fermi surfaces, which has a decisively broken C_{4}, and yet similar Fermi velocity in both directions. This reconciles completely the apparent contradiction between the conclusions of the STM and the transport experiments.

We report a combination of physical property and neutron scattering measurements for polycrystalline samples of the one-dimensional spin chain compound CoV2O6. Heat capacity measurements show that an effective S = 1/2 state is found at low temperatures and that magnetic fluctuations persist up to 6.Tn. Above Tn = 6.3 K, measurements of the magnetic susceptibility as a function of T and H show that the nearest neighbour exchange is ferromagnetic. In the ordered state, we have discovered a crossover from a metamagnet with strong fluctuations between 5 K and Tn to a state with a 1/3 magnetisation plateau at 2 < T < 5 K. We use neutron powder diffraction measurements to show that the AFM state has incommensurate long range order and inelastic time of flight neutron scattering to examine the magnetic fluctuations as a function of temperature. Above Tn, we find two broad bands between 3.5 and 5 meV and thermally activated low energy features which correspond to transitions within these bands. These features show that the excitations are deconfined solitons rather than the static spin reversals predicted for a uniform FM Ising spin chain. Below Tn, we find a ladder of states due to the confining effect of the internal field. A region of weak confinement below Tn, but above 5 K, is identified which may correspond to a crossover between 2D and 3D magnetic ordering.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the layered antimonide PrMnSbO which is isostructural to the parent phase of the iron pnictide superconductors. We find linear resistivity near room temperature and Fermi liquid-like T^{2} behaviour below 150 K. Neutron powder diffraction shows that unfrustrated C-type Mn magnetic order develops below \sim 230 K, followed by a spin-flop coupled to induced Pr order. At T \sim 35 K, we find a tetragonal to orthorhombic (T-O) transition. First principles calculations show that the large magnetic moments observed in this metallic compound are of local origin. Our results are thus inconsistent with either the itinerant or frustrated models proposed for symmetry breaking in the iron pnictides. We show that PrMnSbO is instead a rare example of a metal where structural distortions are driven by f-electron degrees of freedom.

The iron chalcogenide Fe1+y(Te1-xSex) is structurally the simplest of the Fe-based superconductors. Although the Fermi surface is similar to iron pnictides, the parent compound Fe1+yTe exhibits antiferromagnetic order with in-plane magnetic wave-vector (pi, 0). This contrasts the pnictide parent compounds where the magnetic order has an in-plane magnetic wave-vector (pi, pi) that connects hole and electron parts of the Fermi surface. Despite these differences, both the pnictide and chalcogenide Fe-superconductors exhibit superconducting spin resonances around (pi, pi), suggesting a common symmetry for their superconducting order parameter. A central question in this burgeoning field is therefore how (pi, pi) superconductivity can emerge from a (pi, 0) magnetic instability. Here, we report that the magnetic soft mode evolving from the (pi, 0)-type magnetic long-range order is associated with weak charge carrier localization. Bulk superconductivity occurs only as the magnetic mode at (pi, pi) becomes dominant upon do**. Our results suggest a common magnetic origin for superconductivity in iron chalcogenide and pnictide superconductors.

Charge carriers in low-doped semiconductors may distort the atomic lattice and trap themselves forming so-called small polarons. High carrier concentrations can lead to short range ordered polarons (large polarons) and even to long range charge and orbital order. Both systems should be insulating with a large electrical resistivity, which decreases with increasing temperature. However, photoemission measurements recently found a polaronic pseudogap, in a metallic phase of La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7. This layered manganite is famous for colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) associated with a phase transition from this low-temperature metallic phase to a high temperature insulating phase. Broad charge order peaks due to large polarons observed by neutron and x-ray scattering in the insulating phase disappear when La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 becomes metallic. We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements showing that polarons remain inside the metallic phase as fluctuations that strongly broaden and soften certain phonons near the wave vectors where the charge order peaks appeared in the insulating phase. Our findings imply that polaronic signatures in metals may generally come from a competing insulating charge-ordered phase. It is highly relevant to cuprate superconductors with both a pseudogap, and a similar phonon effect associated with a competing stripe order.

The discovery of a new family of high Tc materials, the iron arsenides (FeAs), has led to a resurgence of interest in superconductivity. Several important traits of these materials are now apparent, for example, layers of iron tetrahedrally coordinated by arsenic are crucial structural ingredients. It is also now well established that the parent non-superconducting phases are itinerant magnets, and that superconductivity can be induced by either chemical substitution or application of pressure, in sharp contrast to the cuprate family of materials. The structure and properties of chemically substituted samples are known to be intimately linked, however, remarkably little is known about this relationship when high pressure is used to induce superconductivity in undoped compounds. Here we show that the key structural features in BaFe2As2, namely suppression of the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition and reduction in the As-Fe-As bond angle and Fe-Fe distance, show the same behavior under pressure as found in chemically substituted samples. Using experimentally derived structural data, we show that the electronic structure evolves similarly in both cases. These results suggest that modification of the Fermi surface by structural distortions is more important than charge do** for inducing superconductivity in BaFe2As2.

In the superconducting state only the lower energy part of the spectrum shows significant changes by the formation of a gap and a magnetic resonance that follows the dispersion of the normal state excitations. We use a four band model to describe the Fermi surface topology of iron-based superconductors with the extended $s(\pm)$ symmetry and find that it qualitatively captures the salient features of these data.

This points to cycloidal order of the 4f moments and indicates that inversion-symmetry breaking in this material is not characteristic of the Mn spins alone. The circular dichroism allows to image chiral domains that are imprinted on the surface of a DyMnO$_3$ single crystal, exploiting the local charging by the X-ray beam via the photoelectric effect. These findings suggest a novel approach to control and image domains and domain walls in multiferroic materials.

We found that kee** the same crystal structure for all compositions, Ga for Mn substitution leads to the linear decrease of $T_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn}$ and $τ^{\rm Mn}$, reflecting the reduction of the exchange interactions strength $J_{\rm Mn-Mn}$ and the change of the Mn-O-Mn bond angles. At the same time, a strong suppression of both the induced and the separate Tb-magnetic ordering has been observed. This behavior unambiguously prove that the exchange fields $J_{\rm Mn-Tb}$ have a strong influence on the Tb-magnetic ordering in the full temperature range below $T_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn}$ and actually stabilize the Tb-magnetic ground state.

We present a comprehensive ellipsometric study of an untwinned, nearly stoichiometric LaMnO_3 crystal in the spectral range 1.2-6.0 eV at temperatures 20 K < T < 300 K. The complex dielectric response along the b and c axes of the Pbnm orthorhombic unit cell, ε^b(ν) and ε^c(ν), is highly anisotropic over the spectral range covered in the experiment. The difference between ε^b(ν) and ε^c(ν) increases with decreasing temperature, and the gradual evolution observed in the paramagnetic state is strongly enhanced by the onset of A-type antiferromagnetic long-range order at T_N = 139.6 K. In addition to the temperature changes in the lowest-energy gap excitation at 2 eV, there are opposite changes observed at higher energy at 4 - 5 eV, appearing on a broad-band background due to the strongly dipole-allowed O 2p -- Mn 3d transition around the charge-transfer energy 4.7 eV. Based on the observation of a pronounced spectral-weight transfer between low- and high-energy features upon magnetic ordering, they are assigned to high-spin and low-spin intersite d^4d^4 - d^3d^5 transitions by Mn electrons. The anisotropy of the lowest-energy optical band and the spectral weight shifts induced by antiferromagnetic spin correlations are quantitatively described by an effective spin-orbital superexchange model. An analysis of the multiplet structure of the intersite transitions by Mn e_g electrons allowed us to estimate the effective intra-atomic Coulomb interaction, the Hund exchange coupling, and the Jahn-Teller splitting energy between e_g orbitals in LaMnO_3. This study identifies the lowest-energy optical transition at 2 eV as an intersite d-d transition, whose energy is substantially reduced compared to that obtained from the bare intra-atomic Coulomb interaction.

A re-examination of previous results from synchrotron based x-ray scattering experiments suggests that symmetric exchange striction between neighboring R and Mn ions may account for the enhancement of the ferroelectric polarization in DyMnO3 as well as the magnetic-field induced ferroelectricity in GdMnO3. In general, adding a second magnetic species to a multiferroic material may be a route to enhance its ferroelectric properties.

X-ray resonant magnetic scattering studies of rare earth magnetic ordering were performed on perovskite manganites RMnO3 (R = Dy, Gd) in an applied magnetic field. The data reveal that the field-induced three-fold polarization enhancement for H || a (H approx. 20 kOe) observed in DyMnO3 below 6.5 K is due to a re-emergence of the Mn-induced Dy spin order with propagation vector k(Dy) = k(Mn) = 0.385 b*, which accompanies the suppression of the independent Dy magnetic ordering, k(Dy) = 1/2 b*. For GdMnO3, the Mn-induced ordering of Gd spins is used to track the Mn-ordering propagation vector. The data confirm the incommensurate ordering reported previously, with k(Mn) varying from 0.245 to 0.16 b* on cooling from T_N(Mn) down to a transition temperature T'. New superstructure reflections which appear below T' suggest a propagation vector k(Mn) = 1/4 b* in zero magnetic field, which may coexist with the previously reported A-type ordering of Mn. The Gd spins order with the same propagation vector below 7 K. Within the ordered state of Gd at T = 1.8 K we find a phase boundary for an applied magnetic field H || b, H = 10 kOe, which coincides with the previously reported transition between the ground state paraelectric and the ferroelectric phase of GdMnO3. Our results suggest that the magnetic ordering of Gd in magnetic field may stabilize a cycloidal ordering of Mn that, in turn, produces ferroelectricity.

At ambient pressure CaFe2As2 has been found to undergo a first order phase transition from a high temperature, tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase upon cooling through T ~ 170 K. With the application of pressure this phase transition is rapidly suppressed and by ~ 0.35 GPa it is replaced by a first order phase transition to a low temperature collapsed tetragonal, non-magnetic phase. Further application of pressure leads to an increase of the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition temperature, with it crossing room temperature by ~ 1.7 GPa. Given the exceptionally large and anisotropic change in unit cell dimensions associated with the collapsed tetragonal phase, the state of the pressure medium (liquid or solid) at the transition temperature has profound effects on the low temperature state of the sample. For He-gas cells the pressure is as close to hydrostatic as possible and the transitions are sharp and the sample appears to be single phase at low temperatures. For liquid media cells at temperatures below media freezing, the CaFe2As2 transforms when it is encased by a frozen media and enters into a low temperature multi-crystallographic-phase state, leading to what appears to be a strain stabilized superconducting state at low temperatures.

These results are consistent with a quenched Fe moment in the cT phase and the strong decrease in resistivity observed upon crossing the boundary from the T to cT phase. The suppression or absence of static antiferromagnetic order and dynamic spin fluctuations in the non-superconducting cT phase supports the notion of a coupling between spin fluctuations and superconductivity in the iron arsenides.

The crystal and magnetic structures of the spinel compounds ZnCr$_2$S$_4$ and ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ were investigated by high resolution powder synchrotron and neutron diffraction. ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ exhibits a first order phase transition at $T_N=21$ K into an incommensurate helical magnetic structure. Magnetic fluctuations above $T_N$ are coupled to the crystal lattice as manifested by negative thermal expansion. Both, the complex magnetic structure and the anomalous structural behavior can be related to magnetic frustration. Application of an external magnetic field shifts the ordering temperature and the regime of negative thermal expansion towards lower temperatures. Thereby, the spin ordering changes into a conical structure. ZnCr$_2$S$_4$ shows two magnetic transitions at $T_{N1}=15$ K and $T_{N2}=8$ K that are accompanied by structural phase transitions. The crystal structure transforms from the cubic spinel-type (space group $Fd$\={3}$m$) at high temperatures in the paramagnetic state, via a tetragonally distorted intermediate phase (space group $I4_1$ / $amd$) for $T_{N2} < T < T_{N1}$ into a low temperature orthorhombic phase (space group $I m m a$) for $T < T_{N2}$. The cooperative displacement of sulfur ions by exchange striction is the origin of these structural phase transitions. The low temperature structure of ZnCr$_2$S$_4$ is identical to the orthorhombic structure of magnetite below the Verwey transition. When applying a magnetic field of 5 T the system shows an induced negative thermal expansion in the intermediate magnetic phase as observed in ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$.

We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks show no change in the magnetic structure or ordered moment as a function of pressure in the O phase and we find no evidence of magnetic ordering in the cT phase. Band structure calculations show that the transition results in a strong decrease of the iron 3d density of states at the Fermi energy, consistent with a loss of the magnetic moment.

Also, the incommensurate to commensurate transition of the wave vector at the critical fields is discussed with respect to the Tb and Mn magnetic order and a phase diagram on basis of these observations for magnetic fields H||a and H||b is presented. The observations point to a complicated and delicate magneto-elastic interaction as function of temperature and field.

Our measurements show an unusual balance of exchange interactions (CW= 2.8(2) K) and a single antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 7 K. M(H) isotherms recorded below 5 K show a metamagnetic transition and a 1/3 magnetisation plateau. From 5-7 K, only the metamagnetic transition is observed. For T < TN < ~ 25 K, our heat capacity and magnetisation measurements show evidence for strong low dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations. We propose a simple phase diagram, discuss the principle features and emphasise the importance of Ising anisotropy.

The field-induced multiferroic transition in TbMnO3 has been studied by neutron scattering. Apart strong hysteresis, the magnetic transition associated with the flop of electronic polarization exhibits a memory effect: after a field sweep, TbMnO3 does not exhibit the same phase as that obtained by zero-field cooling. The strong changes in the magnetic excitations across the transition perfectly agree with a rotation of the cycloidal spiral plane indicating that the inverse Dzyaloshinski-Moriya coupling causes the giant magnetoelectric effect at the field-induced transition. The analysis of the zone-center magnetic excitations identifies the electromagnon of the multiferroic high-field phase.

We have utilized neutron powder diffraction to probe the crystal structure of layered Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ near the half do** composition of $x=$0.46 over the temperature range of 2 to 600K. Our measurements show evidence of a dynamic transition in the motion of Na-ions at 300K which coincides with the onset of a near zero thermal expansion in the in-plane lattice constants. The effect of the Na-ordering on the CoO$_{2}$ layer is reflected in the octahedral distortion of the two crystallographically inequivalent Co-sites and is evident even at high temperatures. We find evidence of a weak charge separation into stripes of Co$^{+3.5+ε}$ and Co$^{+3.5-ε}$, $ε\sim0.06e$ below \Tco=150K. We argue that changes in the Na(1)-O bond lengths observed at the magnetic transition at \tm=88K reflect changes in the electronic state of the CoO$_{2}$ layer

We explain this novel matching of wave vectors within the frustrated ANNNI model coupled to a periodic external field produced by the Mn-spin order. The tauTb = tauMn behavior is recovered when Tb magnetization is small, while the tauTb = 3/7 regime is stabilized at low temperatures by a peculiar arrangement of domain walls in the ordered state of Ising-like Tb spins.

Studies of the field dependence of lattice modulations on the contrary show a completely different picture. Whereas in TbMnO3 the polarization flop from P||c to P||a is accompanied by a sudden change from incommensurate to commensurate wave vector modulation, in DyMnO3 the wave vector varies continuously through the flop transition. This smooth behavior may be related to the giant magnetocapacitive effect observed in DyMnO3.

We present measurements of the thermal conductivity $κ$ and the thermal expansion $α$ of NdMnO$_3$ and TbMnO$_3$. In both compounds a splitting of the $4f$ multiplet of the $R^{3+}$ ion causes Schottky contributions to $α$. In TbMnO$_3$ this contribution arises from a crystal-field splitting, while in NdMnO$_3$ it is due to the Nd-Mn exchange coupling. Another consequence of this coupling is a strongly enhanced canting of the Mn moments. The thermal conductivity is greatly suppressed in both compounds. The main scattering process at low temperatures is resonant scattering of phonons between different energy levels of the $4f$ multiplets, whereas the complex 3d magnetism of the Mn ions is of minor importance.

The (H,T)-phase diagram of the multiferroic perovskite TbMnO$_3$ was studied by high-resolution thermal expansion $α(T)$ and magnetostriction $ΔL(H)/L$ measurements. Below $T_{N}\simeq 42$ K, TbMnO$_3$ shows antiferromagnetic order, which changes at $T_{FE}\simeq 28$ K where simultaneously a spontaneous polarization $P||c$ develops. Sufficiently high magnetic fields applied along $a$ or $b$ induce a polarization flop to $P||a$. We find that all of these transitions are strongly coupled to the lattice parameters. Thus, our data allow for a precise determination of the phase boundaries and also yield information about their uniaxial pressure dependencies. The strongly hysteretic phase boundary to the ferroelectric phase with $P||a$ is derived in detail. Contrary to previous reports, we find that even in high magnetic fields there are no direct transitions from this phase to the paraelectric phase. We also determine the various phase boundaries in the low-temperature region related to complex reordering transitions of the Tb moments.

Neutron elastic, inelastic and high energy x-ray scattering techniques are used to explore the nature of the polaron order and dynamics in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3. Static polaron correlations develop within a narrow temperature regime as the Curie temperature is approached from low temperatures, with a nanoscale correlation length that is only weakly temperature dependent. The static nature of these short-range polaron correlations indicates the presence of a glass-like state, similar to the observations for the bilayer manganite in the metallic-ferromagnetic do** region. In addition to this elastic component, inelastic scattering measurements reveal dynamic correlations with a comparable correlation length, and with an energy distribution that is quasielastic. The elastic component disappears at a higher temperature T*, above which the correlations are purely dynamic. The overall behavior bears a remarkable resemblance to the magnetic fluctuation spectrum recently observed in underdoped cuprates.

The magnetic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the spiral and sinusoidally ordered phases. At the incommensurate magnetic zone center of the spiral phase, we find three low-lying magnons whose character has been fully determined using neutron-polarization analysis. The excitation at the lowest energy is the sliding mode of the spiral, and two modes at 1.1 and 2.5meV correspond to rotations of the spiral rotation plane. These latter modes are expected to couple to the electric polarization. The 2.5meV-mode is in perfect agreement with recent infra-red-spectroscopy data giving strong support to its interpretation as an hybridized phonon-magnon excitation.

The antiferromagnetic - ferromagnetic phase transition in YBaCo2O5.50 and YBaCo2O5.44 cobaltites with different types of oxygen-ion ordering in the [YO0.5/0.44] layers has been studied by neutron powder diffraction. Using the magnetic symmetry arguments in combination with group-theoretical analysis, the crystal and magnetic structures above and below the phase transformation temperature, Ti, were determined and successfully refined. In both cases, the proposed models involve a spin-state ordering between diamagnetic (t2g6eg0, S = 0) and paramagnetic (t2g4eg2, S = 2) Co3+ ions with octahedral coordination. Electronic ordering results in a nonzero spontaneous magnetic moment in the high-temperature magnetic phases with isotropic negative exchange interactions. In the case of YBaCo2O5.5, the phase transformation does not change Pmma symmetry of the crystal structure. The wave vectors of magnetic structures above and below Ti are k = 0 and k = c*/2, respectively. In the case of YBaCo2O5.44, a crossover P4/nmm - I4/mmm was involved to solve the low-temperature magnetic structure. The wave vectors in both high-temperature and low-temperature magnetic phases are k = 0. Mechanisms of the phase transformation in both compositions are discussed in the light of obtained magnetic structures. The proposed spin configurations were compared with other models reported in literature.

Neutron powder diffraction and single crystal x-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurements suggest that Dy plays an active role in enhancing the ferroelectric polarization in multiferroic DyMnO3 above TNDy = 6.5 K. We observe the evolution of an incommensurate ordering of Dy moments with the same periodicity as the Mn spiral ordering. It closely tracks the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization which reaches a maximum value of 0.2 muC/m^2. Below TNDy, where Dy spins order commensurately, the polarization decreases to values similar for those of TbMnO3.

This points to a strong interference of Mn and Dy induced structural distortions in DyMnO3 besides a magnetic coupling between the Mn and Dy magnetic moments.

We show that the flop in the electric polarization at the critical field HC, for field H along the a− and b−axis coincides with a 1st order transition to a commensurate phase with propagation vector κ = (0, 1/4, 0). In-field X-ray diffraction measurements show that the quadratic magneto-elastic coupling breaks down with applied field as shown by the observation of the 1st harmonic lattice reflections above and below HC . This indicates that magnetic field induces a linear magneto-elastic coupling. We argue that the commensurate phase can be described by an ordering of Mn-O-Mn bond angles.
