Halide double perovskite semiconductors such as Cs2AgBiBr6 are widely investigated as a more stable, less toxic alternative to lead-halide perovskites in light conversion applications including photovoltaics and photoredox catalysis. However, the relatively large and indirect bandgap of Cs2AgBiBr6 limits efficient sunlight absorption. Here, we show that controlled replacement of Bi3+ with Fe3+ via mechanochemical synthesis results in a remarkable tunable absorption onset between 2.1 and ~1 eV. Our first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that this bandgap reduction originates primarily from a lowering of the conduction band upon introduction of Fe3+. Furthermore, we find that the tunability of the conduction band energy is reflected in the photoredox activity of these semiconductors. Finally, our DFT calculations predict a direct bandgap when >50% of Bi3+ is replaced with Fe3+. Our findings open new avenues for enhancing the sunlight absorption of double perovskite semiconductors and for harnessing their full potential in sustainable energy applications.

In this paper, we propose a new nonuniform mesh method to simulate acoustic scattering problems in two dimensional periodic structures with non-periodic incident fields numerically. As existing methods are difficult to extend to higher dimensions, we have designed the new method with such extensions in mind. With the help of the Floquet-Bloch transform, the solution to the original scattering problem is written as an integral of a family of quasi-periodic problems. These are defined in bounded domains for each value of the Floquet parameter which varies in a bounded interval. The key step in our method is the numerical approximation of the integral by a quadrature rule adapted to the regularity of the family of quasi-periodic solutions. We design a nonuniform mesh with a Gaussian quadrature rule applied on each subinterval. We prove that the numerical method converges exponentially with respect to both the number of subintervals and the number of Gaussian quadrature points. Some numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the results.

Designing objects with predefined optical properties is a task of fundamental importance for nanophotonics, and chirality is a prototypical example of such a property, with applications ranging from photochemistry to nonlinear photonics. A measure of electromagnetic chirality with a well-defined upper bound has recently been proposed. Here, we optimize the shape of silver helices at discrete frequencies ranging from the far infrared to the optical band. Gaussian process optimization, taking into account also shape derivative information of the helices scattering response, is used to maximize the electromagnetic chirality. We show that the theoretical designs achieve more than 90 percent of the upper bound of em-chirality for wavelenghts \SI{3}{\micro\meter} or larger, while their performance decreases towards the optical band. We fabricate and characterize helices for operation at \SI{800}{\nano\meter}, and identify some of the imperfections that affect the performance. Our work motivates further research both on the theoretical and fabrication sides to unlock potential applications of objects with large electromagnetic chirality at optical frequencies, such as helicity filtering glasses. We show that, at \SI{3}{\micro\meter}, a thin slab of randomly oriented helices can absorb 99 percent of the light of one helicity while absorbing only 9 percent of the opposite helicity.

This paper is dedicated to design a direct sampling method of inverse electromagnetic scattering problems, which uses multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data for reconstructing the boundary of perfectly conducting obstacles. We show that a smallest strip containing the unknown object can be approximately determined by the multi-frequency backscattering far field data at two opposite observation directions. The proof is based on the Kirchhoff approximation and Fourier transform. Such a strip is then reconstructed by an indicator, which is the absolute value of an integral of the product of the data and some properly chosen function over the frequency interval. With the increase of the number of the backscattering data, the location and shape of the underlying object can be reconstructed. Numerical examples are conducted to show the validity and robustness of the proposed sampling method. The numerical examples also show that the concave part of the underlying object can be well reconstructed, and the different connected components of the underlying object can be well separated.

Abstract:
We discuss the reaction $e p \to e \tilde{p} X$ in the one-photon exchange approximation, where it is in essence the reaction $γ^{*} p \to \tilde{p} X$. A large rapidity gap is required between the particle or particles of the proton remnant $\tilde{p}$ and those of $X$. We define a suitable azimuthal angle $\varphi$ between a leptonic and a hadronic plane. The dependence of the cross section on $\varphi$ is given explicitly and can be used to extract cross sections and interference terms for the reaction $γ^{*} p \to \tilde{p} X$ corresponding to the various helicities of the virtual photon $γ^{*}$. The interference terms can be used to test models for the large rapidity gap events in a sensitive way. We discuss in detail models with factorizing Pomeron exchange and in particular the Donnachie-Landshoff Pomeron model. We make some remarks on soft colour exchange models and on possible effects of QCD background vacuum fields. We conclude with a suggestion to look for Odderon exchange in exclusive deep inelastic high energy reactions like $γ^{*} p \to \tilde{p} π^{0}$ and $γ^{*} p \to \tilde{p} η$.

Abstract:
It is shown that in the sequential decay $H\to ZZ\to (f_1\bar{f_1})+ (f_2\bar{f_2})$, the energy distribution of the final state particles provides a simple and powerful test of the $HZZ$ vertex. For a standard Higgs boson, the energy spectrum of any final fermion, in the rest frame of $H$, is predicted to be $dΓ/dx\sim 1+β^4-2(x-1)^2$, with $β= \sqrt{1-4m^2_Z/m^2_H}$ and…

For a standard Higgs boson, the energy spectrum of any final fermion, in the rest frame of $H$, is predicted to be $dΓ/dx\sim 1+β^4-2(x-1)^2$, with $β= \sqrt{1-4m^2_Z/m^2_H}$ and $1-β\le x=4E/m_H\le 1+β$. By contrast, the spectrum for a pseudoscalar Higgs is $dΓ/dx \sim β^2+(x-1)^2$. There are characteristic energy correlations between $f_1$ and $f_2$ and between $f_1$ and $\bar{f_2}$. These considerations are applied to the ``gold--plated'' reaction $H\to ZZ\to μ^+μ^-μ^+μ^-$, including possible effects of CP--violation in the $HZZ$ coupling. Our formalism also yields the energy spectra and correlations of leptons in the decay $H\to W^+W^-\to l^+ν_ll^- \bar{ν_l}$.

We re-examine the question of a possible difference in the partial decay widths of $t$ and $\overline t$, induced by an intermediate scalar boson $H^+$ with $CP$-violating couplings. The interference of $W^+$ and $H^+$ exchanges is analysed by constructing the $2\times 2$ propagator matrix of the $W^+-H^+$ system, and determining its absorptive part in terms of fermion loops. Results are obtained for the partial rate difference in the channels $t\to bl^+ν_l $ and $t\to bc\overline s$, which fulfil explicitly the constraints of $CPT$ invariance. These results are contrasted with those in previous work.
