Pattern avoidance and the fundamental bijection
Abstract: The fundamental bijection is a bijection $θ:\mathcal{S}_n\to\mathcal{S}_n$ in which one uses the standard cycle form of one permutation to obtain another permutation in one-line form. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $π\in \mathcal{S}_n$ that avoids a pattern $σ\in \mathcal{S}_3$, whose image $θ(π)$ also avoids $σ$. We additionally consider what happens under repeated iterations… ▽ More

Descents in powers of permutations
Abstract: We consider a few special cases of the more general question: How many permutations $π\in\mathcal{S}_n$ have the property that $π^2$ has $j$ descents for some $j$? In this paper, we first enumerate Grassmannian permutations $π$ by the number of descents in $π^2$. We then consider all permutations whose square has exactly one descent, fully enumerating when the descent is "small" and providing a lo… ▽ More

Pattern-restricted permutations of small order
Abstract: We enumerate 132-avoiding permutations of order 3 in terms of the Catalan and Motzkin generating functions, answering a question of Bóna and Smith from 2019. We also enumerate 231-avoiding permutations that are composed only of 3-cycles, 2-cycles, and fixed points.

Powers of permutations that avoid chains of patterns
Abstract: In a recent paper, Bona and Smith define the notion of \textit{strong avoidance}, in which a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we generalize this idea to what we call \textit{chain avoidance}. We say that a permutation avoids a chain of patterns $(τ_1 : τ_2: \cdots : τ_k)$ if the $i$-th power of the permutation avoids the pattern $τ_i$. We enumerate the set of p… ▽ More

Cyclic permutations avoiding patterns in both one-line and cycle forms
Abstract: Let $σ$ and $τ$ be patterns of length three; that is $σ, τ\in \{123,132,213,231,312,321\}$. In this paper, we enumerate the set of cyclic permutations in $\mathcal{S}_n$ that avoid $σ$ in their one-line notation and another pattern $τ$ in their cycle notation.

Critical groups of arithmetical structures on star graphs and complete graphs
Abstract: An arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph without loops is an assignment of positive integers to the vertices that satisfies certain conditions. Associated to each of these is a finite abelian group known as its critical group. We show how to determine the critical group of an arithmetical structure on a star graph or complete graph in terms of the entries of the arithmetical structur… ▽ More

A new statistic on Dyck paths for counting 3-dimensional Catalan words
Abstract: A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are… ▽ More

A space of goals: the cognitive geometry of informationally bounded agents
Abstract: Traditionally, Euclidean geometry is treated by scientists as a priori and objective. However, when we take the position of an agent, the problem of selecting a best route should also factor in the abilities of the agent, its embodiment and particularly its cognitive effort. In this paper we consider geometry in terms of travel between states within a world by incorporating information processing… ▽ More

Counting acyclic and strong digraphs by descents
Abstract: A descent of a labeled digraph is a directed edge (s, t) with s > t. We count strong tournaments, strong digraphs, and acyclic digraphs by descents and edges. To count strong tournaments we use Eulerian generating functions and to count strong and acyclic digraphs we use a new type of generating function that we call a graphic Eulerian generating function.

On the Intersection Numbers of Finite Groups
Abstract: The covering number of a nontrivial finite group $G$, denoted $σ(G)$, is the smallest number of proper subgroups of $G$ whose set-theoretic union equals $G$. In this article, we focus on a dual problem to that of covering numbers of groups, which involves maximal subgroups of finite groups. For a nontrivial finite group $G$, we define the intersection number of $G$, denoted $ι(G)$, to be the minim… ▽ More

Arithmetical structures on bidents

Pattern restricted quasi-Stirling permutations
Abstract: We define a variation of Stirling permutations, called quasi-Stirling permutations, to be permutations on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ that avoid the patterns 1212 and 2121. Their study is motivated by a known relationship between Stirling permutations and increasing ordered rooted labeled trees. We construct a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the set of ordered rooted l… ▽ More

Involutions and the Gelfand character
Abstract: The Gelfand representation of $\mathcal{S}_n$ is the multiplicity-free direct sum of the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{S}_n$. In this paper, we use a result of Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman to find a recursive generating function for the Gelfand character. In order to find this generating function, we investigate descents of so-called $λ$-unimodal involutions.

Allowed patterns of symmetric tent maps via commuter functions
Abstract: We introduce a new technique to study pattern avoidance in dynamical systems, namely the use of a commuter function between non-conjugate dynamical systems. We investigate the properties of such a commuter function, specifically $h : [0,1] \to [0,1]$ satisfying $T_1 \circ h = h \circ T_μ$, where $T_μ$ denotes a symmetric tent map of height $μ$. We make use of this commuter function to prove strict… ▽ More

Cyclic permutations realized by signed shifts
Abstract: The periodic (ordinal) patterns of a map are the permutations realized by the relative order of the points in its periodic orbits.
