The dissociation micro-states (DMS) of an $N$-protic acid are described using set theory notation. This facilitates the mathematical description of the dissociation micro-equilibrium (DME). In particular, the DME constants are easily obtained in terms of the dissociation equilibrium constants and the molar fractions of the DMSs. Representing of the DMEs in terms of graph theory allows to identify permutations between DMSs that preserve the vertex-edge connectivity of the graph. These permutations, along with their composition, allow us to identify the direct product of the cyclic group $C_2$, and the symmetric group $S_N$, $C_2\times S_N$, as the graph automorphism group of the micro-dissociation of $N$-protic acids.

A closed-form analytical expression for $\ce{[H3O+]}$ has been obtained for aqueous solutions of diprotic acids and its soluble salts. This formula allows to calculate the pH of aqueous solutions of diprotic acids, their buffer solutions, and the titrations of these two by a strong base, from the values of p$K_1$, p$K_2$, and the effective concentrations of the acid and the base, $\bar{C}_\mathrm{a}$ and $\bar{C}_\mathrm{b}$ respectively. It is shown that a strong base titration of an acid, or its buffer solutions, is always a linear path in the $\bar{C}_\mathrm{a}$--$\bar{C}_\mathrm{b}$ plane, which allows a simple analysis of the pH stability of buffer solutions. The mathematical analysis of the equilibrium equations of the dissolution of a diprotic acid in water and the physical constraints allowed to obtain two approximate equations for the diprotic acids. One of the approximations is useful for acids with $\mathrm{p}K_2-\mathrm{p}K_1\le\log_{10}4$, the other for acids with $\mathrm{p}K_2-\mathrm{p}K_1\le-\log_{10}4$.

These expressions are used to evaluate, without the use of numerical approximations, the precision and accuracy of different approximations commonly employed to calculate the pH. The closed-form expression for the pH of a buffer solution is used to obtain an analytical expression for the pH stability when a strong base is added. Finally, it is shown that the pH expressions for all the systems under study can be obtained from an unique closed-form expression in terms of an effective weak acid constant and an effective acid concentration.

Efficient strategies that allow the preparation of molecular systems in particular vibrational states are important in the application of quantum control schemes to chemical reactions. In this paper, we propose the preparation of quasi--bound vibrational states of the collinear transition state complex $\ce{BrHBr}$, from vibrational states of the bihalide ion $\ce{BrHBr-}$, that favor the bond selective breakage of $\ce{BrHBr}$. The results shown complement the investigation that we reported in a previous paper, [A. J. Garzón-Ramírez, J. G. López and C. A. Arango, \textit{Int. J. Quantum Chem.}, 2018, \textbf{24}, e25784], in which we demonstrated the feasibility of controlling the bond selective decomposition of the collinear BrHBr using linear combinations of reactive resonances. We employed a dipole moment surface, calculated at the QCISD/\textit{d-aug-cc-pVTZ} level of theory, to simulate the interaction of the $\ce{BrHBr-}$ ground vibrational state with heuristically optimized sequences of ultrashort infrared linear chirped laser pulses to achieve a target vibrational state, resulting from expanding a chosen linear combination of reactive resonances of BrHBr in terms of vibrational eigenstates of $\ce{BrHBr-}$. The results of our simulations show final states that capture the most relevant features of the target state with different levels of description depending on the sequence of laser pulses employed. We also discuss ways of improving the description of the target state and possible limitations of our approach.

A system of two bilinearly coupled harmonic oscillators has been solved analytically by using the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) product wavefunction ansatz and the phase-space bound trajectory approach [J. S. Molano et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. \textbf{76}(12), 138171 (2021)]. The bilinearly coupled oscillator system allows to obtain the analytical expression of the quantum system, facilitating comparison with the results of using the BO ansatz product. The analytical and BO wavefunctions are obtained as a product of parabolic cylinder functions. The arguments of the parabolic cylinder functions of the exact and the BO wavefunctions are related to the physical coordinates by linear transformations, represented by matrices $\mathsf{G}$ and $\mathsf{\tilde{G}}$ respectively. A $QU$ decomposition of the matrix $\mathsf{G}$ outputs an upper triangular matrix $\mathsf{U}$ that is closely related to the BO $\mathsf{\tilde{G}}$ matrix. The effect of the BO non-adiabatic coupling is analyzed on the stability of the phase-space equations of motion. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions obtained by the Born-Oppenheimer phase-space trajectory approach show excellent agreement with the analytical solutions.

The method presented simplifies some approaches shown in textbooks, based on asymptotic analyses of the time-independent Schrödinger equation, and power series methods with recurrence relations. In addition, the method presented here facilitates the understanding of the relationship between the ordinary differential equations of the mathematical physics and the time independent Schrödinger equation of physical models as the harmonic oscillator, the rigid rotor, the Hydrogen atom, and the Morse oscillator.

A mathematical phase-space representation of the 1-dimensional Schrödinger equation is employed to obtain bound and resonance states of the rotationally excited H$_2$ molecule. The structure of the phase-space tangent field is analyzed and related to the behavior of the wave function in classically allowed and forbidden regions. In this phase-space representation, bound states behave like unstable orbits meanwhile resonance states behave similarly to asymptotically stable cycles. The lattice of quantum states of the energy-momentum diagram for H$_2$ is calculated allowing to have a global view of the energy as function of the quantum numbers. The arc length and winding number of the phase-space trajectories, as functions of the energy, are used to obtain the energy eigenvalues of bound and resonance states of H$_2$

For low values of r we compute this sum explicitly. We also study the asymptotics of the energy of G(r,N) for big N. There is a known integral formula for the linear growth coefficient, we find a new expression of the form of a finite trigonometric sum with r terms. As an application we show that in the family G(r,N) for r less or equal than 4 there is a finite number of hyperenergetic graphs. On the other hand, for each r>4 there is at most a finite number of non-hyperenergetic graphs of the form G(r,N). Finally we show that the graph G(r,2r+1) minimizes the energy among all the regular graphs of degree 2r.

We propose a methodology to design optimal pulses for achieving quantum optimal control on molecular systems. Our approach constrains pulse shapes to linear combinations of a fixed number of experimentally relevant pulse functions. Quantum optimal control is obtained by maximizing a multi-target fitness function with genetic algorithms. As a first application of the methodology we generated an optimal pulse that successfully maximized the yield on a selected dissociation channel of a diatomic molecule. Our pulse is obtained as a linear combination of linearly chirped pulse functions. Data recorded along the evolution of the genetic algorithm contained important information regarding the interplay between radiative and diabatic processes. We performed a principal component analysis on these data to retrieve the most relevant processes along the optimal path. Our proposed methodology could be useful for performing quantum optimal control on more complex systems by employing a wider variety of pulse shape functions.

Static electric fields, nonresonant linearly polarized laser fields, and collinear combinations of the two are investigated. We treat specifically the molecules iodobenzene (a nearly prolate asymmetric top), pyridazine (nearly oblate asymmetric top), and iodopentafluorobenzene (intermediate case). The location of relative equilibria in the $E$-$m$ plane and associated bifurcations are determined by straightforward calculation, with analytical results given where possible. In cases where analytical solutions cannot be obtained, we resort to numerical solutions, while kee** a geometrical picture of the nature of the solutions to the fore. The classification we obtain of the topology of classically allowed rotor configuration space regions in the $E$-$m$ diagram is of potential use in characterization of energy eigenstates of the corresponding quantum mechanical problem.
