The relic density of dark matter in the $Λ$CDM model restricts the parameter space for a cosmological axion field, constraining the axion decay constant, the initial amplitude of the axion field and the axion mass. It is shown via lattice simulations how the relic density of axion-like particles with masses close to the one of the QCD axion is affected by axion-gauge field interactions and by initial axion inhomogeneities. For pre-inflationary axions, once the Hubble parameter becomes smaller than the axion mass, the latter starts to oscillate, and part of its energy density is spent producing gauge fields via parametric resonance. If the gauge fields are dark photons and Standard Model photons, the energy density of dark photons becomes higher than the one of the axion, while the high conductivity of the primordial plasma damps the oscillations of the photon field. Such a scenario allows for the production of small-scale, primordial magnetic fields, and it is found that the relic density of axions with a low decay constant are within the bounds set by the $Λ$CDM model, while GUT-scale axions are far too abundant. It is also shown that initial inhomogeneities of the axion field can change substantially the gauge field production, boosting or suppressing (depending on the axion parameters and couplings) the magnetogenesis mechanism with respect to an homogeneous axion field. It is found that when the axion mass is far lighter than the QCD axion model and the initial axion field is inhomogeneous, weak but cosmologically relevant magnetic field seeds can be generated on scales of the order of $0.1$ kpc.

Compact objects such as neutron stars and white dwarfs can source axion-like particles and QCD axions due to CP-violating axion-fermion couplings. The magnitude of the axion field depends on the stellar density and on the strength of the axion-fermion couplings. We show that even CP-violating couplings one order of magnitude smaller than existing constraints source extended axion field configurations. For axion-like particles, the axion energy is comparable to the magnetic energy in neutron stars with inferred magnetic fields of the order of $10^{13}$ G, and exceeds by more than one order of magnitude the magnetic energy content of white dwarfs with inferred fields of the order of $10^{4}$ G. On the other hand, the energy stored in the QCD axion field is orders of magnitude lower due to the smallness of the predicted CP-violating couplings. It is shown that the sourced axion field can polarize the photons emitted from the stellar surface, and stimulate the production of photons with energies in the radio band.

The coupling between axions and photons modifies Maxwell's equations, introducing a dynamo term in the magnetic induction equation. In neutron stars, for critical values of the axion decay constant and axion mass, the magnetic dynamo mechanism increases the total magnetic energy of the star. We show that this generates substantial internal heating due to enhanced dissipation of crustal electric currents. These mechanisms would lead magnetized neutron stars to increase their magnetic energy and thermal luminosity by several orders of magnitude, in contrast to observations of thermally-emitting neutron stars. To prevent the activation of the dynamo, bounds on the allowed axion parameter space can be derived.

The dissipation of intense crustal electric currents produces high Joule heating rates in cooling neutron stars. Here it is shown that Joule heating can counterbalance fast cooling, making it difficult to infer the presence of hyperons (which accelerate cooling) from measurements of the observed thermal luminosity $L_γ$. Models with and without hyperon cores match $L_γ$ of young magnetars (with poloidal-dipolar field $B_{\textrm{dip}} \gtrsim 10^{14}$ G at the polar surface and $L_γ \gtrsim 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $t \lesssim 10^5$ yr) as well as mature, moderately magnetized stars (with $B_{\textrm{dip}} \lesssim 10^{14}$ G and $10^{31} \ \textrm{erg s}^{-1} \lesssim L_γ \lesssim 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $t \gtrsim 10^5$ yr). In magnetars, the crustal temperature is almost independent of hyperon direct Urca cooling in the core, regardless of whether the latter is suppressed or not by hyperon superfluidity. The thermal luminosities of light magnetars without hyperons and heavy magnetars with hyperons have $L_γ$ in the same range and are almost indistinguishable. Likewise, $L_γ$ data of neutron stars with $B_{\textrm{dip}} \lesssim 10^{14}$ G but with strong internal fields are not suitable to extract information about the equation of state as long as hyperons are superfluid, with maximum amplitude of the energy gaps of the order $\approx 1$ MeV.

Neutron star models with maximum mass close to $2 \ M_{\odot}$ reach high central densities, which may activate nucleonic and hyperon direct Urca neutrino emission. To alleviate the tension between fast theoretical cooling rates and thermal luminosity observations of moderately magnetized, isolated thermally-emitting stars (with $L_γ \gtrsim 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $t \gtrsim 10^{5.3}$ yr), some internal heating source is required. The power supplied by the internal heater is estimated for both a phenomenological source in the inner crust and Joule heating due to magnetic field decay, assuming different superfluidity models and compositions of the outer stellar envelope. It is found that a thermal power of $W(t) \approx 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ allows neutron star models to match observations of moderately magnetized, isolated stars with ages $t \gtrsim 10^{5.3}$ yr. The requisite $W(t)$ can be supplied by Joule heating due to crust-confined initial magnetic configurations with (i) mixed poloidal-toroidal fields, with surface strength $B_{\textrm{dip}} = 10^{13}$ G at the pole of the dipolar poloidal component and $\sim 90$ per cent of the magnetic energy stored in the toroidal component; and (ii) poloidal-only configurations with $B_{\textrm{dip}} = 10^{14}$ G.

We consider the capture of dark matter (DM) in neutron stars via scattering on hadronic targets, including neutrons, protons and hyperons. We extend previous analyses by including momentum dependent form factors, which account for hadronic structure, and incorporating the effect of baryon strong interactions in the dense neutron star interior, rather than modelling the baryons as a free Fermi gas. The combination of these effects suppresses the DM capture rate over a wide mass range, thus increasing the cross section for which the capture rate saturates the geometric limit. In addition, variation in the capture rate associated with the choice of neutron star equation of state is reduced. For proton targets, the use of the interacting baryon approach to obtain the correct Fermi energy is essential for an accurate evaluation of the capture rate in the Pauli-blocked regime. For heavy neutron stars, which are expected to contain exotic matter, we identify cases where DM scattering on hyperons contributes significantly to the total capture rate. Despite smaller neutron star capture rates, compared to existing analyses, we find that the projected DM-nucleon scattering sensitivity greatly exceeds that of nuclear recoil experiments for a wide DM mass range.

A quark-magnetic Ginzburg-Landau (qHGL) gradient expansion of the free energy of two-flavor inhomogeneous quark matter in a magnetic field $H$ is derived analytically. It can be applied away from the Lifshitz point, generalizing standard Ginzburg-Landau techniques. The thermodynamic potential is written as a sum of the thermal contribution, the non-thermal lowest Landau level contribution, and the non-thermal qHGL functional, which handles any arbitrary position-dependent periodic modulation of the chiral condensate as an input. The qHGL approximation has two main practical features: (1) it is fast to compute; (2) it applies to non-plane-wave modulations such as solitons even when the amplitude of the condensate and its gradients are large (unlike standard Ginzburg-Landau techniques). It agrees with the output of numerical techniques based on standard regularization schemes and reduces to known results at zero temperature ($T = 0$) in benchmark studies. It is found that the region of the $μ$-$T$ plane (where $μ$ is the chemical potential) occupied by the inhomogeneous phase expands, as $H$ increases and $T$ decreases.

Analytic arguments have been advanced that the degree of differential rotation in a neutron star depends on whether the topology of the internal magnetic field is open or closed. To test this assertion, the ideal-magnetohydrodynamics solver PLUTO is employed to investigate numerically the flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid threaded by a magnetic field with open and closed topologies in a conducting, differentially rotating, spherical shell. Rigid body corotation with the outer sphere is enforced on the Alfvén time-scale, along magnetic field lines that connect the northern and southern hemispheres of the outer sphere. Along other field lines, however, the behavior is more complicated. For example, an initial point dipole field evolves to produce an approximately closed equatorial flux tube containing at least one predominantly toroidal and approximately closed field line surrounded by a bundle of predominantly toroidal but open field lines. Inside the equatorial flux tube, the field-line-averaged magnetic tension approaches zero, and the fluid rotates differentially, adjusting its angular velocity on the viscous time-scale to match the boundary conditions on the flux tube's toroidal surface. Outside the equatorial flux tube the differential rotation increases, as the magnetic tension averaged along open field lines decreases.

We develop an innovative technique for studying inhomogeneous phases with a spontaneous broken symmetry. The method relies on the knowledge of the exact form of the free energy in the homogeneous phase and on a specific gradient expansion of the order parameter. We apply this method to quark matter at vanishing temperature and large chemical potential, which is expected to be relevant for astrophysical considerations. The method is remarkably reliable and fast as compared to performing the full numerical diagonalization of the quark Hamiltonian in momentum space, and is designed to improve the standard Ginzburg-Landau expansion close to the phase transition points. For definiteness we focus on inhomogeneous chiral symmetry breaking, accurately reproducing known results for 1D and 2D modulations and examining novel crystalline structures, as well. Consistently with previous results, we find that the energetically favored modulation is the so-called 1D real kink crystal. We propose a qualitative description of the pairing mechanism to motivate this result.
