The magnetooptic Kerr effect (MOKE) is a well known and handy tool to characterize ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic materials. Many of the MOKE techniques employ effects solely linear in magnetization $\bm{M}$. Nevertheless, a higher-order term being proportional to $\bm{M}^2$ and called quadratic MOKE (QMOKE) can additionally contribute to the experimental data. Here, we present detailed QMOKE spectroscopy measurements in the range of 0.8 -- 5.5\,eV based on a modified 8-directional method applied on ferromagnetic bcc Fe thin films grown on MgO substrates. From the measured QMOKE spectra, two further complex spectra of the QMOKE parameters $G_s$ and $2G_{44}$ are yielded. The difference between those two parameters, known as $ΔG$, denotes the strength of the QMOKE anisotropy. Those QMOKE parameters give rise to the QMOKE tensor $\bm{G}$, fully describing the perturbation of the permittivity tensor in the second order in $\bm{M}$ for cubic crystal structures. We further present experimental measurements of ellipsometry and linear MOKE spectra, wherefrom permittivity in the zeroth and the first order in $\bm{M}$ are obtained, respectively. Finally, all those spectra are described by ab-initio calculations.

The quality of an As35S65 chalcogenide glass (ChG) grating fabricated by electron beam lithography (EBL) was characterized by optical scatterometry based on spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) in the visible and near infrared spectral range and complementary techniques providing direct images, especially atomic force microscopy (AFM). The geometric dimensions and the shape of patterned grating lines were determined by fitting modeled values (calculated by the Fourier modal method) to SE experimental data. A simple power-dependent function with only one variable parameter was successfully used to describe the shape of the patterned lines. The result yielded by SE is shown to correspond to AFM measurement with high accuracy, provided that optical constants of ChG modified by EBL were used in the fitting procedure. The line edge roughness (LER) of the grating was also investigated by further fitting the SE data to find out that no LER is optically detectable in the spectral range used, which is essential for the functionality of optical tools fabricated by EBL.

Tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Together with the x-ray diffraction and precession electron diffraction tomography, our analysis confirms recent theoretical claim [Phys.Rev.B 96, 094406 (2017)] that copper atoms occupy lattice positions in the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell.

Pulse laser deposited La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films on SrTiO3 substrates were characterized by polar and longitudinal Kerr magneto-optical spectroscopy. An agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra was achieved for a 10.7 nm thick film, while a distinction in the Kerr effect amplitudes was obtained for a 5 nm thick film. This points to the slight suppression of ferromagnetism by interface effects. Nevertheless, the room temperature ferromagnetism of the 5 nm thick film was clearly demonstrated. All the studied films exhibit magneto-optical properties similar to single crystals and thick films, which confirms a fully developed perovskite structure even at 5 nm.

We demonstrate an enhancement of the plane wave expansion method treating two-dimensional photonic crystals by applying Fourier factorization with generally elliptic polarization bases. By studying three examples of periodically arranged cylindrical elements, we compare our approach to the classical Ho method in which the permittivity function is simply expanded without changing coordinates, and to the normal vector method using a normal-tangential polarization transform. The compared calculations clearly show that our approach yields the best convergence properties owing to the complete continuity of our distribution of polarization bases. The presented methodology enables us to study more general systems such as periodic elements with an arbitrary cross-section or devices such as photonic crystal waveguides.

We present a possibility to switch the chirality of a spin vortex occurring in a magnetic nanodisk by applying a uniform in-plane field pulse, based on optimizing its strength and duration. The related spin-dynamical process, investigated by micromagnetic simulations, consists of several stages. After applying the field, the original vortex is expelled from the disk, after which two C-shaped states oscillate between each other. The essence of the method is based on turning the field off at a suitably chosen moment for which the orientation of the C-state will evolve into the nucleation of a vortex with the desirable chirality. This idea simply uses the information about the original chirality present inside the nanodisk during the dynamic process before losing it in saturation, and can thus be regarded as analogous to the recent studies on the polarity switching.

We investigate the influence of the vortex chirality on the magnetization processes of a magnetostatically coupled pair of magnetic disks. The magnetic vortices with opposite chiralities are realized by introducing asymmetry into the disks. The motion of the paired vortices are studied by measuring the magnetoresistance with lock-in resistance bridge technique. The vortex annihilation process is found to depend on the moving directions of the magnetic vorticies. The experimental results are well reproduced by the micromagnetic simulation.
