We develop a theoretical predictive model for an all-pass ring resonator that enables the most complete description of linear coupling regimes. The model is based on eigenmode decomposition of Maxwell's equations with full account of the confined and leaky modes, as opposed to the existing phenomenological methods restricted to the confined modes only. This model enables quantitative description of all-pass ring resonators and provides insights into the physics underlying microring-waveguide coupling. We experimentally validate the model using transmission measurements in the linear regime of aluminium nitride resonators. The developed model is then used to explore the field enhancement in microrings crucial for nonlinear photonic applications.

Hybrid dielectric metasurfaces have emerged as a promising approach to enhancing near field confinement and thus achieving high optical nonlinearity using low loss dielectrics. Additional flexibility in design and fabrication of hybrid metasurfaces allows dynamic control of light, which is value-added for a wider range of applications. Here, we demonstrate a tunable and efficient third harmonic generation (THG) via hybrid metasurfaces with phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) deposited on top of amorphous silicon nanostructutes. Fano resonance is excited to confine the incident light inside the hybrid metasurfaces, and an experimental quality factor ($Q$-factor) of 125 is achieved at the fundamental pump wavelength around 1210 nm. We demonstrate the switching between a turn-on state of Fano resonance in the amorphous state of GST and a turn-off state in its crystalline state and also gradual multistate tuning of THG emission at its intermediate state. We achieve a high THG conversion efficiency of $η = 2.9*10^{-6}$ %, which is more than ~32 times of that of a GST-based Fabry-Pèrot cavity under a similar pump laser power, thanks to the enhanced field confinement due to the Fano resonance. Our results show the strong potential of GST-based hybrid dielectric metasurfaces for efficient and tunable nonlinear optical devices.

Resonant metasurfaces are an attractive platform for enhancing the non-linear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), since they can generate very large local electromagnetic fields while relaxing the phase-matching requirements. Here, we take this platform a step closer to the practical applications by demonstrating visible range, continuous wave (CW) SHG. We do so by combining the attractive material properties of gallium phosphide with engineered, high quality-factor photonic modes enabled by bound states in the continuum. For the optimum case, we obtain efficiencies around 5e-5 % W$^{-1}$ when the system is pumped at 1200 nm wavelength with CW intensities of 1 kW/cm$^2$. Moreover, we measure external efficiencies as high as 0.1 % W$^{-1}$ with pump intensities of only 10 MW/cm$^2$ for pulsed irradiation. This efficiency is higher than the values previously reported for dielectric metasurfaces, but achieved here with pump intensities that are two orders of magnitude lower.

We demonstrate SHG in the visible range around 655 nm using low power continuous-wave pump in the optical communication O-band. Our structures utilize modal phase matching, such that lower order eigenmodes of the pump are phase matched to higher order eigenmodes of the second harmonic. We observe phase matched SHG for different combinations of interacting modes by varying the widths of the waveguides and tuning the wavelength of the pump. The presented results contribute to the development of integrated photonic platforms with efficient nonlinear wave-mixing processes for classical and quantum applications.

Due to the growing popularity of optical superchannels and software defined networking, reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) architectures for superchannel switching have recently attracted significant attention. ROADMs based on micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and liquid crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) technologies are predominantly used. Motivated by requirements for low power, high-speed, small area footprint and compact switching solutions, we propose and demonstrate spatial and wavelength flexible superchannel switching using monolithically integrated silicon photonics (SiP) micro-ring resonators (MRR). We demonstrate the MRRs capabilities and potential to be used as a fundamental building block in ROADMs. Unicast and multicast switching operation of an entire superchannel is demonstrated after transmission over 50 km of standard single mode fiber. The performance of each sub-channel from the 120 Gb/s QPSK Nyquist superchannel is analyzed and degradation in error vector magnitude performance was observed for outer sub-channels due to the 3-dB bandwidth of the MRRs, which is comparable with the superchannel bandwidth. However, all sub-channels for all switching cases (unicast, multicast and bi-directional operation) exhibit performance far below the 7% FEC limit. The switching time of the SiP MRR chip is such that high capacity superchannel interconnects between users can be setup and reconfigured on the microsecond timescale.

Quantum Dash (Q-Dash) Passively Mode-Locked Lasers (PMLLs) exhibit significant low frequency Relative Intensity Noise (RIN), due to the high Mode Partition Noise (MPN), which prevents the implementation of multilevel amplitude modulation formats such as PAM4. The authors demonstrate low frequency RIN mitigation by employing 8B/10B and Manchester encoding with PAM4 modulation format. These encoding techniques reduce the overlap between the modulation spectral content and the low-frequency RIN of the Q-Dash devices, at the expense of increased overhead. The RIN of the 33.6 GHz free spectral range Q-Dash PMLL was characterized, and the results obtained show very high levels of RIN from DC to 4 GHz, but low levels for higher frequencies. The performance improvement for 28 GBaud 8B/10B and Manchester encoded PAM4 signal has been demonstrated compared to the case when no encoding is used. Finally, the effect of RIN on the system performance was demonstrated by comparing the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the PAM4 signaling obtained with an External Cavity Laser (ECL) to those obtained with Q-Dash PMLL.
