Intel Stratix 10 FPGA design for track reconstruction for the ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC

The Pattern Recognition Mezzanine (PRM), as part of the HTT system, has been designed to recognize track candidates in silicon detectors with Associative Memory ASICs and to select and reconstruct tracks using linearized algorithms implemented in an Intel Stratix 10 MX FPGA. The highly parallelized FPGA design makes extensive use of the integrated High-Bandwidth-Memory. In this paper, the FPGA design for the PRM board is presented. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CDF Run II detector, $<p_T^{DY}>$ is measured as a function of the Z/$γ^*$ invariant mass. It is found that these two observables have a dependence, $<p_T^{DY}> = -8 + 2.2 \ln m_{DY}^2$ [GeV/c], where $m_{DY}$ is the value of the Z/$γ^*$ mass measured in units of GeV/$c^2$. This linear dependence is observed for the first time in this analysis. It may be exploited to model the effect of ISR and constrain its impact in other processes. △ Less

Pattern-matching Unit for Medical Applications

MRF is a new, quantitative, imaging technique that replaces multiple qualitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exams with a single, reproducible measurement for increa… ▽ More We explore the application of concepts developed in High Energy Physics (HEP) for advanced medical data analysis. Our study case is a problem with high social impact: clinically-feasible Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF). MRF is a new, quantitative, imaging technique that replaces multiple qualitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exams with a single, reproducible measurement for increased sensitivity and efficiency. A fast acquisition is followed by a pattern matching (PM) task, where signal responses are matched to entries from a dictionary of simulated, physically-feasible responses, yielding multiple tissue parameters simultaneously. Each pixel signal response in the volume is compared through scalar products with all dictionary entries to choose the best measurement reproduction. MRF is limited by the PM processing time, which scales exponentially with the dictionary dimensionality, i.e. with the number of tissue parameters to be reconstructed. We developed for HEP a powerful, compact, embedded system, optimized for extremely fast PM. This system executes real-time tracking for online event selection in the HEP experiments, exploiting maximum parallelism and pipelining. Track reconstruction is executed in two steps. The Associative Memory (AM) ASIC first implements a PM algorithm by recognizing track candidates at low resolution. The second step, which is implemented into FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), refines the AM output finding the track parameters at full resolution. We propose to use this system to perform MRF, to achieve clinically reasonable reconstruction time. The FTK core, made of 9U VME boards, performs the most demanding computational task. The Associative Memory Board Serial Link Processor (AMB) and the Auxiliary card (AUX), plugged on the front and back sides of the same VME slot, constitute the Processing Unit (PU), which finds tracks using hits from 8 layers of the inner detector. The PU works in pipeline with the Second Stage Board (SSB), which finds 12-layer tracks by adding extra hits to the identified tracks. In the designed configuration, 16 PUs and 4 SSBs are installed in a VME crate. The high power-consumption of the AMB, AUX and SSB (respectively of about 250 W, 70 W and 160 W per board) required the development of a custom cooling system. Even though the expected power consumption for each VME crate of the FTK system is high compared to a common VME setup, the 8 FTK core crates will use $\approx$ 60 kW, which is just a fraction of the power and the space needed for a CPU farm performing the same task. We report on the integration of 32 PUs and 8 SSBs inside the FTK system, on the infrastructures needed to run and cool them, and on the tests performed to verify the system processing rate and the temperature stability at a safe value. △ Less

This particle, the $φ$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified… ▽ More We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard-model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the $φ$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to $5.4~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for hypothetical $φ$ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/$c^2$. Search for standard-model Z and Higgs bosons decaying into a bottom-antibottom quark pair in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV

This data set, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$, is used to measure the $Z$-boson production cross section times branching ratio into $b\bar{b}$. The number of $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ events is determined by fitting the dijet-mass distribution while constraining the dominant $b$-jet background, originating from QCD multijet events, with data. The result, $σ(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z) \times \mathcal{B}(Z \rightarrow b\bar{b})= 1.11\pm 0.08(\text{stat}) \pm 0.14(\text{syst})~\text{nb}$, is the most precise measurement of this process, and is consistent with the standard-model prediction. The data set is also used to search for Higgs-boson production. No significant signal is expected in our data and the first upper limit on the cross section for the inclusive $p\bar p \rightarrow H\rightarrow b\bar b$ process at $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV is set, corresponding to 33 times the expected standard-model cross section, or $σ= 40.6$ pb, at the 95\% confidence level. △ Less

We use $D^{+} \to K^-π^+π^+$ decays fully reconstructed in the central rapidity region $|y|<1$ with transverse momentum down to 1.5 GeV/$c$, a range previously unexplored in $p\bar{p}$ collisions. Inelastic $p\bar{p}$-scattering events are selected online using minimally-biasing requirements followed by an optimized offline selection. The $K^-π^+π^+$ mass distribution is used to identify the $D^+$ signal, and the $D^+$ transverse impact-parameter distribution is used to separate prompt production, occurring directly in the hard scattering process, from secondary production from $b$-hadron decays. We obtain a prompt $D^+$ signal of 2950 candidates corresponding to a total cross section $σ(D^+, 1.5 < p_T < 14.5~\mbox{GeV/}c, |y|<1) = 71.9 \pm 6.8 (\mbox{stat}) \pm 9.3 (\mbox{syst})~μ$b. While the measured cross sections are consistent with theoretical estimates in each $p_T$ bin, the shape of the observed $p_T$ spectrum is softer than the expectation from quantum chromodynamics. The results are unique in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and can improve the shape and uncertainties of future predictions. △ Less

This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides $3.7σ$ evidence of the summed production processes of either {\it WW} or {\it WZ} bosons with a measured total cross section of $σ_{WW+WZ} = 13.7\pm 3.9$~pb. Independent measurements of the {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay-patterns of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of {\it WW} and of {\it WZ} dibosons are independently seen with significances of $2.9σ$ and $2.1σ$, respectively, with total cross sections of $σ_{WW}= 9.4\pm 4.2$~pb and $σ_{WZ}=3.7^{+2.5}_{-2.2}$~pb. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$ and that the $W$- and $Z$-boson masses are on-shell, yields $\sin^2θ_W = 0.22400 \pm 0.00045$, or equivalently a $W$-boson mass of $80.328 \pm 0.024 \;{\rm GeV}/c^2$. △ Less

The inclusive asymmetry, corrected to the entire phase space at parton level, is measured to be $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}} = 0.12 \pm 0.13$, consistent with the expectations from the standard-model (SM) and previous CDF results in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combination of the CDF measurements of the inclusive $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}$ in both final states yields $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}=0.160\pm0.045$, which is consistent with the SM predictions. We also measure the differential asymmetry as a function of $Δy$. A linear fit to $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$, assuming zero asymmetry at $Δy=0$, yields a slope of $α=0.14\pm0.15$, consistent with the SM prediction and the previous CDF determination in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combined slope of $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$ in the two final states is $α=0.227\pm0.057$, which is $2.0σ$ larger than the SM prediction. △ Less

Using a data sample corresponding to $9.7\, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of ^Mproton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96\rm~ TeV$ produced by the Fermilab Tevatron, we reconstruct $V+D^{*+}$ samples with the CDF~II detector. The $D^{*+}$ is fully reconstructed in the $D^{*}(2010)^+ \rightarrow D^{0}(\to K^-π^+)π^+$ decay mode. This technique is sensitive to the associated production of vector boson plus charm or bottom mesons. We measure the ratio of production cross sections $σ(W+D^{*})/σ(W)$ = $[1.75\pm 0.13 {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.09 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and $σ(Z+D^{*})/σ(Z)$ = $[1.5\pm 0.4 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.2 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and perform a differential measurement of $dσ(W+D^{*})/dp_T(D^{*})$. Event properties are utilized to determine the fraction of $V+D^{*}(2010)^+$ events originating from different production processes. Abstract: We report on a search for charged massive resonances decaying to top ($t$) and bottom ($b$) quarks in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV collected by the CDF~II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.5 $fb^{-1}$. No significant excess above the standard model (SM) background prediction is observed. Using a SM extension with a $W^{\prime}$ and left-right-symmetric couplings as a benchmark model, we constrain the $W^{\prime}$ mass and couplings in the 300 to 900 GeV/$c^2$ range. The data extend up to dipion mass $M(π^+π^-)$ = 5000 MeV/$c^2$ and show resonance structures attributed to $f_0$ and $f_2(1270)$ mesons. We statistically subtract $D^0$ and $\overline{D}^0$ mesons originating from $b$-hadron decays and measure the yield asymmetry between anticharm and charm decays as a function of decay time. We measure $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = (-0.19 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.04 (syst))\%$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-)= (-0.01 \pm 0.18 (stat) \pm 0.03 (syst))\%$. The sum of the $s$- and $t$-channel single top quark cross sections is measured to be $3.53_{-1.16}^{+1.25}$ pb and a lower limit on $V_{tb}$ of 0.63 is obtained at the 95% credibility level. These measurements are combined with previously reported CDF results obtained from events with an imbalance in total transverse energy, jets identified as originating from $b$ quarks, and exactly one identified lepton. Events containing at least one jet with pT > 400 GeV/c in a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.95 inverse fb, collected in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, are selected. We measure the following baryon masses: \begin{eqnarray} M(Ξ_c^{0}) = 2470.85\pm0.24(stat)\pm0.55(syst) \, MeV/c^2, \nonumber M(Ξ_c^{+}) = 2468.00\pm0.18(stat)\pm0.51(syst) \, MeV/c^2, \nonumber \\ M(Λ_b) = 5620.15\pm0.31(stat)\pm0.47(syst) \, MeV/c^2, \nonumber \\ M(Ξ_b^-) = 5793.4\pm1.8(stat)\pm0.7(syst) \, MeV/c^2, \nonumber \\ M(Ξ_b^0) = 5788.7\pm4.3(stat)\pm1.4(syst) \, MeV/c^2, \, and \nonumber \\ M(Ω_b^-) = 6047.5\pm3.8(stat)\pm0.6(syst) \, MeV/c^2. \nonumber \end{eqnarray} The isospin splitting of the $Ξ_b^{-,0}$ states is found to be $M(Ξ_b^-)-M(Ξ_b^0)=4.7\pm4.7(stat)\pm0.7(syst)$ MeV/$c^2$. The isospin splitting of the $Ξ_c^{0,+}$ states is found to be $M(Ξ_c^0)-M(Ξ_c^+)$ = $2.85\pm0.30(stat)\pm0.04(syst)$ MeV/$c^2$. Abstract: Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p\bar{p} \rightarrow μ^+μ^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $μ^-$ as a function of the invariant mass of the $μ^+μ^-$ pair is used to obtain the effective leptonic determination $\sin^2 θ^{lept}_{eff}$ of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2 θ_W$, from which the… ▽ More Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p\bar{p} \rightarrow μ^+μ^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The value of $\sin^2 θ^{lept}_{eff}$ is found to be 0.2315 +- 0.0010, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined in quadrature. When interpreted within the context of the standard model using the on-shell renormalization scheme, where $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$, the measurement yields $\sin^2 θ_W$ = 0.2233 +- 0.0009, or equivalently a W-boson mass of 80.365 +- 0.047 GeV/c^2. Abstract: A search for forbidden and exotic Z boson decays in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented for the first time in hadron collisions, based on data corresponding to 10.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of signal is observed, and 95% credibility level Bayesian upper limits are set on the branching rat… ▽ More A search for forbidden and exotic Z boson decays in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented for the first time in hadron collisions, based on data corresponding to 10.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of signal is observed, and 95% credibility level Bayesian upper limits are set on the branching ratios of decays of the Z boson to a photon and neutral pion (which is detected as a photon), a pair of photons, and a pair of neutral pions. The observed branching ratio limits are 2.01 x 10^-5 for Z to π^0γ, 1.46 x 10^-5 for Z to γγ, and 1.52 x 10^-5 for Z to π^0π^0. The Z to π^0γ and Z to γγ limits improve by factors of 2.6 and 3.6, respectively, the most stringent results from other experiments. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria. We determine the production cross section to be 2.5 +2.0 -1.0 pb (< 6.1 pb at the 95% confidence level), consistent with the standard model prediction of 5.1 pb. △ Less

Relative to previous CDF analyses, we expand the geometric and kinematic coverage of electrons and muons and utilize tau leptons that decay hadronically. Inclusion of tau leptons is particularly important for supersymmetry (SUSY) searches. The results are consistent with standard-model predictions. By optimizing our event selection to increase sensitivity to the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) SUSY model, we set limits on the associated production of chargino and neutralino, the SUSY partners of the electroweak gauge bosons. We exclude cross sections up to 0.1 pb and chargino masses up to 168 GeV/c^2 at 95% CL, for a suited set of mSUGRA parameters. Abstract: Using the full CDF Run II data sample, we report evidence for a new resonance, which we refer to as $B(5970)$, found simultaneously in the $B^0π^+$ and $B^+π^-$ mass distributions with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. We further report the first study of resonances consistent with orbitally excited $B^{+}$ mesons and an updated measurement of the properties of orbitally excited $B^0$ and… ▽ More Using the full CDF Run II data sample, we report evidence for a new resonance, which we refer to as $B(5970)$, found simultaneously in the $B^0π^+$ and $B^+π^-$ mass distributions with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. We further report the first study of resonances consistent with orbitally excited $B^{+}$ mesons and an updated measurement of the properties of orbitally excited $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. We measure the masses and widths of all states, as well as the relative production rates of $B_1$, $B_2^*$, and $B(5970)$ states and the branching fraction of the $B_{s2}^{*0}$ state to either $B^{*+} K^-$ and $B^{+} K^-$. Furthermore, we measure the production rates of the orbitally excited $B^{0,+}$ states relative to the $B^{0,+}$ ground state. The masses of the new $B(5970)$ resonances are $5978\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{ MeV/c}^{2}$ for the neutral state and $5961\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{ MeV/c}^{2}$ for the charged state, assuming that the resonance decays into $Bπ$ final states. Observation of D0-D0bar Mixing using the CDF II Detector

Abstract: We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for D0 -> K+ pi- to the Cabibbo-favored decay D0 -> K- pi+. The charge conjugate decays are included. A signal of 3.3 x 10^4 D*+ -> pi+ D0, D0 -> K+ pi- decays is obtained with D0 proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D0 lifetimes. Assuming CP conservation, we search for D0-D0bar mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be R_D = (3.51 +/- 0.35) x 10^{-3}, y' = (4.3 +/- 4.3) x 10^{-3}, and x'^2 = (0.08 +/- 0.18) x 10^{-3}. We report Bayesian probability intervals in the x'^2 - y' plane and find that the significance of excluding the no-mixing hypothesis is equivalent to 6.1 Gaussian standard deviations, providing the second observation of D0-D0bar mixing from a single experiment. △ Less

For a top-quark mass $\mtop = \gevcc{172.5}$, we find $1.10<\gmt<\gev{4.05}$ at 68% confidence level, which is in agreement with the standard-model expectation of \gev{1.3} and is the most precise direct measurement of the top-quark width to date. △ Less

Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to… ▽ More We summarize and combine direct measurements of the mass of the $W$ boson in $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 \text{TeV}$ proton-antiproton collision data collected by CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to $2.2 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using data corresponding to $4.3 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the $W$ boson is $\MW = 80\,387 \pm 16 \text{MeV}$. Including measurements obtained in electron-positron collisions at LEP yields the most precise value of $\MW = 80\,385 \pm 15 \text{MeV}$. △ Less
