We experimentally investigate the sensing properties of an open cavity operating in the THz regime and realized by employing as mirrors two thin vanadium dioxide (VO2) films grown on silicon parallel plates and separated by a variable length. The phase transition of VO2 is used to control the behavior of the system between two different responses: a high transmission mode to the incident radiation (VO2 in the insulating state) and a high sensitivity to tiny changes in the cavity refractive index (VO2 in the conducting state). In the first state, the low loss regime enables to adjust the cavity length and easily optimize the resonances due to the Fabry-Perot (FP) effect in the Si plates and in the cavity volume. The activation of the metallic-like state instead, by dam** the FP oscillations in the plates, promotes the onset of a comb-like spectrum that can be exploited as a versatile tool for accurate sensing applications. Using both an analytical model and full-wave simulations, we estimate the device response to variation in the refractive index of the cavity volume, showing that the proposed structure can achieve sensitivity values among the highest reported for THz sensors.

The use of graphene in a form of discontinuous flakes in polymer composites limits the full exploitation of the unique properties of graphene, thus requiring high filler loadings for achieving - for example - satisfactory electrical and mechanical properties. Herein centimetre-scale CVD graphene/polymer nanolaminates have been produced by using an iterative 'lift-off/float-on' process and have been found to outperform, for the same graphene content, state-of-the-art flake-based graphene polymer composites in terms of mechanical reinforcement and electrical properties. Most importantly these thin laminate materials show a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness, reaching 60 dB for a small thickness of 33 micron, and an absolute EMI shielding effectiveness close to 3* 10 ^5 dB cm ^2 g^-1 which is amongst the highest values for synthetic, non-metallic materials produced to date.

Herein we report on the preparation of microcellular thermoplastic polyurethane/graphene foams by batch foaming. Solution blending was first adopted to disperse graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) in the elastomeric matrix. Then, a foaming process based on the use of supercritical CO2 was adopted to produce the microcellular TPU/GNP composite foams with graphene content up to 1 wt%. The EMI shielding behaviour of the TPU/GNP foams has been assessed in the THz range, and has revealed their potential in comparison with other graphene-filled foams presented in the literature, that exhibit similar specific shielding effectiveness but at much higher content of graphene-related materials (10-30 wt%).

We report on the formation and development of the photonic band gap in two-dimensional 8-, 10- and 12-fold symmetry quasicrystalline lattices of low index contrast. Finite size structures made of dielectric cylindrical rods were studied and measured in the microwave region, and their properties compared with a conventional hexagonal crystal. Band gap characteristics were investigated by changing the direction of propagation of the incident beam inside the crystal. Various angles of incidence from 0 \degree to 30\degree were used in order to investigate the isotropic nature of the band gap. The arbitrarily high rotational symmetry of aperiodically ordered structures could be practically exploited to manufacture isotropic band gap materials, which are perfectly suitable for hosting waveguides or cavities.

In this Letter, we report on the first experimental evidence of such extraordinary transmission phenomena, via microwave (X/Ku-band) measurements on printed-circuit-board prototypes. Experimental results agree very well with full-wave numerical predictions, and indicate an intrinsic robustness of the enhanced transmission phenomena with respect to fabrication tolerances and experimental imperfections.

Driving a sinusoidal current in a single coil placed in front of the sample, a non zero third harmonic voltage $V_{3}$ is induced in it when Abrikosov vortices enter the sample. Conditions to be satisfied for the quantitative evaluation of $B_{C1}$ using this technique are detailed. In a recent investigation, we studied two-dimensional point-defected photonic bandgap cavities composed of dielectric rods arranged according to various representative periodic and aperiodic lattices, with special emphasis on possible applications to particle acceleration (along the longitudinal axis). In this paper, we present a new study aimed at highlighting the possible advantages of using hybrid structures based on the above dielectric configurations, but featuring metallic rods in the outermost regions, for the design of extremely-high quality factor, bandgap-based, accelerating resonators. In this framework, we consider diverse configurations, with different (periodic and aperiodic) lattice geometries, sizes, and dielectric/metal fractions. Moreover, we also explore possible improvements attainable via the use of superconducting plates to confine the electromagnetic field in the longitudinal direction. Results from our comparative studies, based on numerical full-wave simulations backed by experimental validations (at room and cryogenic temperatures) in the microwave region, identify the candidate parametric configurations capable of yielding the highest quality factor.

At the exit surface of a photonic crystal, the intensity of the diffracted wave can be periodically modulated, showing a maximum in the "positive" (forward diffracted) or in the "negative" (diffracted) direction, depending on the slab thickness. This thickness dependence is a direct result of the so-called Pendellosung phenomenon, consisting of the periodic exchange inside the crystal of the energy between direct and diffracted beams. We report the experimental observation of this effect in the microwave region at about 14 GHz by irradiating 2D photonic crystal slabs of different thickness and detecting the intensity distribution of the electromagnetic field at the exit surface and inside the crystal itself.

We present the key results from a comprehensive study of the refraction and focusing properties of a two-dimensional dodecagonal photonic ``quasicrystal'' (PQC), carried out via both full-wave numerical simulations and microwave measurements on a slab made of alumina rods inserted in a parallel-plate waveguide. We observe anomalous refraction and focusing in several frequency regions, confirming some recently published results. However, our interpretation, based on numerical and experimental evidence, differs substantially from the one in terms of ``effective negative refractive-index'' that was originally proposed. Instead, our study highlights the critical role played by short-range interactions associated with local order and symmetry.

We present a study of the lensing properties of two-dimensional (2-D) photonic quasicrystal (PQC) slabs made of dielectric cylinders arranged according to a 12-fold-symmetric square-triangle aperiodic tiling. Our full-wave numerical analysis confirms the results recently emerged in the technical literature and, in particular, the possibility of achieving focusing effects within several frequency regions. However, contrary to the original interpretation, such focusing effects turn out to be critically associated to local symmetry points in the PQC slab, and strongly dependent on its thickness and termination. Nevertheless, our study reveals the presence of some peculiar properties, like the ability to focus the light even for slabs with a reduced lateral width, or beaming effects, which render PQC slabs potentially interesting and worth of deeper investigation. Key words: Photonic quasicrystals; negative refraction; superlensing.

Experiments are carried out using a dielectrically loaded copper cavity operating at 7 GHz in a "hot finger" configuration. The results confirm recent experimental findings that CaC6 behaves as a weakly-coupled, fully gapped, superconductor. Microwave data on samples having critical temperatures above 41 K, very low resistivity values, and residual resistivity ratio larger than 10, are shown. The dependence of the nonlinear surface losses and of the third order intermodulation products on the power feeding the cavity and on the temperature is analyzed. The critical current density of a superconducting film can be easily determined by an inductive and contactless method. Driving a sinusoidal current in a single coil placed in front of a superconducting sample, a non zero third harmonic voltage V_3 is induced in it when the sample goes beyond the Bean critical state. The onset of V_3 marks the value of current beyond which the sample response to the magnetic induction is no more linear. To take into account, in a realistic way, the magnetic coupling between the film and the coil we have developed a discrete model of the inducing and induced currents distribution. In the framework of this model the magnetic field profile on the sample surface and the coefficient linking the current flowing in the coil and the critical current density J_C of superconducting thin films is evaluated. The numerical results are checked measuring J_C of several thin films of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-d) of known superconducting properties, used as a control material.

The experimental results show that the third order products increase with the two-tone input power with a slope ranging between 1.5 and 2.3. The behaviour can be understood introducing a mechanism of vortex penetration in grain boundaries as the most plausible source of non linearities in these films. This assumption is confirmed by the analysis of the field dependence of the surface resistance, that show a linear behaviour at all temperatures under test.

We present a study of the electrodynamic response of MgB2 pellets and thin film samples exhibiting critical temperatures ranging between 26 and 38 K. We have performed accurate measurements of the surface impedance ZS =RS+iXS as a function of the temperature and of the magnitude of the electromagnetic field. The temperature variation and the field dependence of ZS was measured by a dielectric resonator cavity technique in the microwave region. In particular, the temperature variation of the magnetic penetration depth was also determined in the RF region by a single coil mutual inductance method. In the case of the films, for T<TC/2 a clear exponential behavior of the penetration depth is observed, which can be explained by a simple BCS s-wave model with a reduced value of the energy gap. On the contrary, pellets show no evidence of saturation, and the experimental results strictly follow a quadratic dependence down to the lowest temperatures. This behavior can be induced by the presence of metallic Mg inclusions that may locally depress the gap. The analysis of the field dependence of the surface impedance in the microwave region confirms that the electrodynamic response of MgB2 is dominated by different sources of dissipation, depending on the sample history, likely to be ascribed to the predominance of grain boundaries or normal regions on its surface.

Surface impedance measurements of LuNi2B2C superconducting thin films as a function of temperature have been performed down to 1.5 K and at 20 GHz using a dielectric resonator technique. The magnetic penetration depth closely reproduces the standard B.C.S. result, but with a reduced value of the energy gap at low temperature. These data provide evidence for an anisotropic s-wave character of the order parameter symmetry in LuNi2B2C. From the evaluation of the real part of complex conductivity, we have observed constructive (type II) coherence effects in the electromagnetic absorption below Tc.
