The analysis of high-precision $π^{\pm}p \to π^{\pm}p$ cross section data from the EPECUR Collaboration based on the multichannel $K$-matrix approach is presented. The sharp structures seen in these data are studied in terms of both opening thresholds and new resonance contributions. Some prominent features are found to be due to the opening $KΣ$ channel. However, a complete description of the data is improved with the addition of two narrow resonant structures at $W\sim 1.686$ and $W\sim 1.720$ GeV. These structures are interpreted as manifestations of $S_{11}$ and $P_{11}$ resonances. The underlying nature of the observed phenomena is discussed.

Background: The rate λ_ppμ characterizes the formation of ppμ molecules in collisions of muonic pμ atoms with hydrogen. In measurements of the basic weak muon capture reaction on the proton to determine the pseudoscalar coupling g_P, capture occurs from both atomic and molecular states. Thus knowledge of λ_ppμ is required for a correct interpretation of these experiments.
Purpose: Recently the MuCap experiment has measured the capture rate Λ_S from the singlet pμ atom, employing a low density active target to suppress ppμ formation (PRL 110, 12504 (2013)). Nevertheless, given the unprecedented precision of this experiment, the existing experimental knowledge in λ_ppμ had to be improved.
Method: The MuCap experiment derived the weak capture rate from the muon disappearance rate in ultra-pure hydrogen. By do** the hydrogen with 20 ppm of argon, a competing process to ppμ formation was introduced, which allowed the extraction of λ_ppμ from the observed time distribution of decay electrons.
Results: The ppμ formation rate was measured as λ_ppμ= (2.01 +- 0.06(stat) +- 0.03(sys)) 10^6 s^-1. This result updates the λ_ppμ value used in the above mentioned MuCap publication.
Conclusions: The 2.5x higher precision compared to earlier experiments and the fact that the measurement was performed at nearly identical conditions to the main data taking, reduces the uncertainty induced by λ_ppμ to a minor contribution to the overall uncertainty of Λ_S and g_P, as determined in MuCap. Our final value for λ_ppμ shifts Λ_S and g_P by less than one tenth of their respective uncertainties compared to our results published earlier.

Abstract:
Cross sections for pi+-p elastic scattering have been measured to high precision, for beam momenta between 800 and 1240 MeV/c, by the EPECUR Collaboration, using the ITEP proton synchrotron. The data precision allows comparisons of the existing partial-wave analyses (PWA) on a level not possible previously. These comparisons imply that updated PWA are required.

The MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute performed a high-precision measurement of the rate of the basic electroweak process of nuclear muon capture by the proton, $μ^- + p \rightarrow n + ν_μ$. The experimental approach was based on the use of a time projection chamber (TPC) that operated in pure hydrogen gas at a pressure of 10 bar and functioned as an active muon stop** target. The TPC detected the tracks of individual muon arrivals in three dimensions, while the trajectories of outgoing decay (Michel) electrons were measured by two surrounding wire chambers and a plastic scintillation hodoscope. The muon and electron detectors together enabled a precise measurement of the $μp$ atom's lifetime, from which the nuclear muon capture rate was deduced. The TPC was also used to monitor the purity of the hydrogen gas by detecting the nuclear recoils that follow muon capture by elemental impurities. This paper describes the TPC design and performance in detail.

The OLYMPUS experiment was designed to measure the ratio between the positron-proton and electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections, with the goal of determining the contribution of two-photon exchange to the elastic cross section. Two-photon exchange might resolve the discrepancy between measurements of the proton form factor ratio, $μ_p G^p_E/G^p_M$, made using polarization techniques and those made in unpolarized experiments. OLYMPUS operated on the DORIS storage ring at DESY, alternating between 2.01~GeV electron and positron beams incident on an internal hydrogen gas target. The experiment used a toroidal magnetic spectrometer instrumented with drift chambers and time-of-flight detectors to measure rates for elastic scattering over the polar angular range of approximately $25^\circ$--$75^\circ$. Symmetric Møller/Bhabha calorimeters at $1.29^\circ$ and telescopes of GEM and MWPC detectors at $12^\circ$ served as luminosity monitors. A total luminosity of approximately 4.5~fb$^{-1}$ was collected over two running periods in 2012. This paper provides details on the accelerator, target, detectors, and operation of the experiment.

EPECUR experimental setup is aimed at the search of narrow resonant states by precision measurement of differential and total reaction cross sections of pion-nucleon interaction with 1 MeV pion energy steps. In five years passed from the idea of the experiment till the start of the data taking in April of 2009, a new apparatus was build from scratch at the universal beam line 322 of ITEP proton synchrotron U-10. The setup is essentially a non-magnetic spectrometer with a liquid hydrogen target based on the large aperture drift chambers with hexagonal structure. The unique properties of the beam line allow individual pion momentum measurement with the accuracy better than 0.1%. The momentum tagging is done with 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The design of numerous subsystems of the setup is based on modern electronic components including microprocessors and FPGA. All the subsystems are tuned and tested both individually and as parts of the whole working setup. The distributed data acquisition system uses widely spread USB and Ethernet protocols, which allows to achieve high performance and take full advantage of the industrial solutions.

The generalization of Einstein's special theory of relativity (SRT) is proposed. In this model the possibility of unification of scalar gravity and electromagnetism into a single united field is considered. Formally, the generalization of the SRT is that instead of (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space the (1+4)-dimensional extension G is considered. As a fifth additional coordinate the interval S is used. This value is saved under the usual Lorentz transformations in Minkowski space M, but it changes when the transformations in the extended space G are used. We call this model the extended space model (ESM). From a physical point of view our expansion means that processes in which the rest mass of the particles changes are acceptable now. If the rest mass of a particle does not change and the physical quantities do not depend on an additional variable S, then the electromagnetic and gravitational fields exist independently of each other. But if the rest mass is variable and there is a dependence on S, then these two fields are combined into a single united field. In the extended space model a photon can have a nonzero mass and this mass can be either positive or negative. The gravitational effects such as the speed of escape, gravitational red shift and deflection of light can be analyzed in the frame of the extended space model. In this model all these gravitational effects can be found algebraically by the rotations in the (1+4) dimensional space. Now it becomes possible to predict some future results of visible size of super massive objects in our Universe due to new stage of experimental astronomy development in the Radio Astron Project and analyze phenomena of the star V838 Monocerotis explosion as possible Local Big Bang (LBB).

A muon beam was stopped in a time projection chamber filled with 10-bar, ultra-pure hydrogen gas. Cylindrical wire chambers and a segmented scintillator barrel detected electrons from muon decay. L_S is determined from the difference between the mu- disappearance rate in hydrogen and the free muon decay rate. The result is based on the analysis of 1.2 10^10 mu- decays, from which we extract the capture rate L_S = (714.9 +- 5.4(stat) +- 5.1(syst)) s^-1 and derive the proton's pseudoscalar coupling g_P(q^2_0 = -0.88 m^2_mu) = 8.06 +- 0.55.

Study of the elastic scattering can produce a rich information on the dynamics of the strong interaction. The EPECUR collaboration is aimed at the research of baryon resonances in the second resonance region via pion-proton elastic scattering and kaon-lambda production. The experiment features high statistics and better than 1 MeV resolution in the invariant mass thus allowing searches for narrow resonances with the coupling to the pi p channel as low as 5%. The experiment is of "formation" type, i.e. the resonances are produced in s-channel and the scan over the invariant mass is done by the variation of the incident pion momentum which is measured with the accuracy of 0.1% with a set of 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The reaction is identified by a magnetless spectrometer based on wire drift chambers with a hexagonal structure. Background suppression in this case depends on the angular resolution, so the amount of matter in the chambers and the setup was minimized to reduce multiple scattering.
The measurements started in 2009 with the setup optimized for elastic pion-proton scattering. With 3 billions of triggers already recorded the differential cross section of the elastic pi p-scattering on a liquid hydrogen target in the region of the diffraction minimum is measured with statistical accuracy about 1% in 1 MeV steps in terms of the invariant mass. The paper covers the experimental setup, current status and some preliminary results.

We propose to measure the rate \Rd\ for muon capture on the deuteron to better than 1.5% precision. This process is the simplest weak interaction process on a nucleus that can both be calculated and measured to a high degree of precision. The measurement will provide a benchmark result, far more precise than any current experimental information on weak interaction processes in the two-nucleon system. Moreover, it can impact our understanding of fundamental reactions of astrophysical interest, like solar pp fusion and the $ν+d$ reactions observed by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Recent effective field theory calculations have demonstrated, that all these reactions are related by one axial two-body current term, parameterized by a single low-energy constant. Muon capture on the deuteron is a clean and accurate way to determine this constant. Once it is known, the above mentioned astrophysical, as well as other important two-nucleon reactions, will be determined in a model independent way at the same precision as the measured muon capture reaction.

An experiment EPECUR, aimed at the search of the cryptoexotic non-strange member of the pentaquark antidecuplet, started its operation at a pion beam line of the ITEP 10 GeV proton synchrotron. The invariant mass range of the interest (1610-1770) MeV will be scanned for a narrow state in the pion-proton and kaon-lambda systems in the formation-type experiment. The scan in the s-channel is supposed to be done by the variation of the incident pi- momentum and its measurement with the accuracy of up to 0.1% with a set of 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The reactions under the study will be identified by a magnetless spectrometer based on wire drift chambers with a hexagonal structure. Because the background suppression in this experiment depends on the angular resolution, the amount of matter in the chambers and setup is minimized to reduce multiple scattering. The differential cross section of the elastic pi-p-scattering on a liquid hydrogen target in the region of the diffractive minimum will be measured with statistical accuracy 0.5% in 1 MeV steps in terms of the invariant mass. For KLambda-production the total cross section will be measured with 1% statistical accuracy in the same steps. An important byproduct of this experiment will be a very accurate study of Lambda polarization. The setup was assembled and tested in December 2008 and in April 2009 we had the very first physics run. About 0.5x10^9 triggers were written to disk covering pion beam momentum range 940-1135 MeV/c.

The product of the operators acting on the fermion states is mapped onto star-product of the fermionic symbols. The kernel of the star-product is obtained. The antisymmetry of the fermion states is formulated as the specific symmetry property of the tomographic joint probability distribution associated with the states.

The rate of nuclear muon capture by the proton has been measured using a new experimental technique based on a time projection chamber operating in ultra-clean, deuterium-depleted hydrogen gas at 1 MPa pressure. The capture rate was obtained from the difference between the measured $μ^-$ disappearance rate in hydrogen and the world average for the $μ^+$ decay rate. The target's low gas density of 1% compared to liquid hydrogen is key to avoiding uncertainties that arise from the formation of muonic molecules. The capture rate from the hyperfine singlet ground state of the $μp$ atom is measured to be $Λ_S=725.0 \pm 17.4 s^{-1}$, from which the induced pseudoscalar coupling of the nucleon, $g_P(q^2=-0.88 m_μ^2)=7.3 \pm 1.1$, is extracted. This result is consistent with theoretical predictions for $g_P$ that are based on the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD.

'EPECUR' experiment setup is under construction at the beam line 322 of the ITEP proton synchrotron. The experiment requires several large area drift chambers to provide reasonable acceptance and fine pitch proportional chambers for beam particle tracking with total number of electronic channels of about 7000. New compact and cost effective readout system for these gaseous detectors was designed, prototyped and tested in the latest two years based on the modern technologies in analog and digital electronics, as well as in data transfer protocols. Mass production of the proportional chamber electronics is close to the end, while the boards for the drift chambers are manufactured in the amount to equip one 8-plane module. The paper presents the functional description of the whole DAQ system and its main parts together with some of the test results as an illustration of the excellent performance of the system. The appendix contains specific information which may be useful for the system users or code developers.

In addition to Lorentz transformations (T;X), (T;Y), (T;Z) which are in (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space, in the proposed (1+4)d extended space two other types of transformations exist in planes (T,S); (X,S), (Y,S), (Z,S) that converts massive particles into massless and vice versa. We also consider energy-momentum-mass 5-d space which is conjugated to the time-coordinates-interval (T;X,Y,Z,S) space. The mass in above mentioned 5-d energy-momentum-mass space corresponds to the interval S in 5-d space (T,X,Y,Z,S). Well known energy-momentum 4-vector P(1+3)=(E/c; px,py,pz) in the Minkowski (T;X,Y,Z) space is transformed to the the 5-vector - P(1+4)=(E/c; px,py,pz,mc) in the extended space G(T;X,Y,Z,S) and becomes isotropic for 5-vectors of the massive as well as for the massless particles.

It can be both positive, and negative, and photon's energy and strength of the gravitational field determine its absolute value. It is shown that in ESM model formation of bubble gravitational structures is possible. In the frame of ESM one can obtain the follow physical picture. Bubble gravitational objects have a halo formed by dark matter generated by photons with a positive mass. The photons with a negative mass are throw away in free deep space and create there antigravitating vacuum with negative pressure. The comparison ESM bubble structures with similar objects of a type "gravastar", existing in a General Theory of Relativity (GR) is made.

In the extended (1 + 4) -dimensional space (T;X,Y,Z,S)-(time-space-interval) it is considered a model joining electromagnetic and gravitational fields. For the equations circumscribing these fields, the exact solutions appropriated to dot moving sources are found. Such solutions express through potentials Lienard-Wiechert in the extended space. The aim of the MuCap experiment is a 1% measurement of the singlet capture rate Lambda_S for the basic electro-weak reaction mu + p -> n + nu_mu. This observable is sensitive to the weak form-factors of the nucleon, in particular to the induced pseudoscalar coupling constant g_P. It will provide a rigorous test of theoretical predictions based on the Standard Model and effective theories of QCD. The present method is based on high precision lifetime measurements of mu^- in hydrogen gas and the comparison with the free mu^+ lifetime. The mu^- experiment will be performed in ultra-clean, deuterium-depleted H_2 gas at 10 bar. Low density compared to liquid H_2 is chosen to avoid uncertainties due to ppmu formation. A time projection chamber acts as a pure hydrogen active target. It defines the muon stop position in 3-D and detects rare background reactions. Decay electrons are tracked in cylindrical wire-chambers and a scintillator array covering 75% of 4 pi.
