We present an analytical formalism to study the secular dynamics of a system consisting of N-2 planets orbiting a binary star in outer orbits. We introduce a canonical coordinate system and expand the disturbing function in terms of canonical elliptic elements, combining both Legendre polynomials and Laplace coefficients, to obtain a general formalism for the secular description of this type of configuration. With a quadractic approximation of the development, we present a simplified analytical solution for the planetary orbits for both the single planet and the two-planet cases. From the two-planet model, we show that the inner planet accelerates the precession rate of the binary pericenter, which, in turn, may enter in resonance with the secular frequency of the outer planet, characterizing a secular resonance. We calculate an analytical expression for the approximate location of this resonance and apply it to known circumbinary systems, where we show that it can occur at relatively close orbits, for example at 2.4 au for the Kepler-38 system. With a more refined model, we analyse the dynamics of this secular resonance and we show that a bifurcation of the corresponding fixed points can affect the long term evolution and stability of planetary systems. By comparing our results with complete integrations of the exact equations of motion, we verified the accuracy of our analytical model.

This paper deals with a new formulation of the creep tide theory (Ferraz-Mello, Cel. Mech. Dyn. Astron. {\bf 116}, 109, 2013 $-$ Paper I) and with the tidal dissipation predicted by the theory in the case of stiff bodies whose rotation is not synchronous but is oscillating around the synchronous state with a period equal to the orbital period. We show that the tidally forced libration influences the amount of energy dissipated in the body and the average perturbation of the orbital elements. This influence depends on the libration amplitude and is generally neglected in the study of planetary satellites. However, they may be responsible for a 27 percent increase in the dissipation of Enceladus. The relaxation factor necessary to explain the observed dissipation of Enceladus ($γ=1.2-3.8\times 10^{-7}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$) has the expected order of magnitude for planetary satellites and corresponds to the viscosity $0.6-1.9 \times 10^{14}$ Pa s, which is in reasonable agreement with the value recently estimated by Efroimsky (2018) ($0.24 \times 10^{14}$ Pa s) and with the value adopted by Roberts and Nimmo (2008) for the viscosity of the ice shell ($10^{13}-10^{14}$ Pa s). For comparison purposes, the results are extended also to the case of Mimas and are consistent with the negligible dissipation and the absence of observed tectonic activity. The corrections of some mistakes and typos of paper II (Ferraz-Mello, Cel. Mech. Dyn. Astron. {\bf 122}, 359, 2015) are included at the end of the paper.

We present a semi-analytical correction to the seminal solution for the secular motion of a planet's orbit under gravitational influence of an external perturber derived by Heppenheimer (1978). A comparison between analytical predictions and numerical simulations allows us to determine corrective factors for the secular frequency and forced eccentricity in the co-planar restricted three-body problem. The correction is given in the form of a polynomial function of the system's parameters that can be applied to first-order forced eccentricity and secular frequency estimates. The resulting secular equations are simple, straight forward to use and improve the fidelity of Heppenheimer's solution well beyond higher-order models. The quality and convergence of the corrected secular equations are tested for a wide range of parameters and limits of its applicability are given.

We analyse the secular dynamics of planets on S-type coplanar orbits in tight binary systems, based on first- and second-order analytical models, and compare their predictions with full N-body simulations. The perturbation parameter adopted for the development of these models depends on the masses of the stars and on the semimajor axis ratio between the planet and the binary.
We show that each model has both advantages and limitations. While the first-order analytical model is algebraically simple and easy to implement, it is only applicable in regions of the parameter space where the perturbations are sufficiently small. The second-order model, although more complex, has a larger range of validity and must be taken into account for dynamical studies of some real exoplanetary systems such as $γ$-Cephei and HD 41004A. However, in some extreme cases, neither of these analytical models yields quantitatively correct results, requiring either higher-order theories or direct numerical simulations.
Finally, we determine the limits of applicability of each analytical model in the parameter space of the system, giving an important visual aid to decode which secular theory should be adopted for any given planetary system in a close binary.

In this paper, we investigate whether hypothetical Earth-like planets have high probability of remaining on stable orbits inside the habitable zones around the stars A and B of α Centauri, for lengths of time compatible with the evolution of life. We introduce a stability criterion based on the solution of the restricted three-body problem and apply it to the α Centauri system. In this way, we determine the regions of the short-term stability of the satellite-type (S-type) planetary orbits, in both planar and three-dimensional cases. We also study the long-term stability of hypothetical planets through the dynamical map** of the habitable zones of the stars. The topology of the maps is analyzed using the semi-analytical secular Hamiltonian model and possible processes responsible for long-lasting instabilities are identified. We verify that the planetary motion inside the habitable zones is regular, regardless of high eccentricities, for inclinations smaller than 40°. We show that the variation of the orbital distance of the planet located in the habitable zones of the binary is comparable to that of Earth, if the planet is close to the Mode I stationary solution. This result brings positive expectations for finding habitable planets in binary stars.
