Reduced fusion systems over 2-groups of small order
Abstract: We prove, when $S$ is a $2$-group of order at most $2^9$, that each reduced fusion system over $S$ is the fusion system of a finite simple group and is tame. It then follows that each saturated fusion system over a $2$-group of order at most $2^9$ is realizable. What is most interesting about this result is the method of proof: we show that among $2$-groups with order in this range, the ones which… ▽ More

Magnitude and phase reciprocity calibration of ultrasonic piezoelectric disk in air
Abstract: A modified conventional three-transducer reciprocity calibration method is used to measure the magnitude and phase responses of the transmitting voltage response and the free-field open-circuit receiving voltage sensitivity of ultrasonic piezoelectric transducers radiating in air at 1 atm. The transducers used in this work are 20 x 2 mm circular piezoelectric ceramic disks with their first and sec… ▽ More

Experimental investigation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in low-Z targets
Abstract: In the CERN NA63 collaboration we have addressed the question of the potential inadequacy of the commonly used Migdal formulation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect by measuring the photon emission by 20 and 178 GeV electrons in the range 100 MeV - 4 GeV, in targets of LowDensityPolyEthylene (LDPE), C, Al, Ti, Fe, Cu, Mo and, as a reference target, Ta. Experimental investigations of synchrotron radiation at the onset of the quantum regime
Abstract: The classical description of synchrotron radiation fails at large Lorentz factors, $γ$, for relativistic electrons crossing strong transverse magnetic fields $B$. In the rest frame of the electron this field is comparable to the so-called critical field $B_0 = 4.414\cdot10^9$ T. For $χ= γB/B_0 \simeq 1$ quantum corrections are essential for the description of synchrotron radiation to conserve ener… ▽ More

The C*-algebra of an affine map on the 3-torus
Abstract: We study the C*-algebra of an affine map on a compact abelian group and give necessary and sufficient conditions for strong transitivity when the group is a torus. The structure of the C*-algebra is completely determined for all strongly transitive affine maps on a torus of dimension one, two or three.

High energy cosmic-ray interactions with particles from the Sun
Abstract: Cosmic-ray protons with energies above $10^{16}$ eV passing near the Sun may interact with photons emitted by the Sun and be excited to a $Δ^+$ resonance. When the $Δ^+$ decays, it produces pions which further decay to muons and photons which may be detected with terrestrial detectors. A flux of muons, photon pairs (from $π^0$ decay), or individual high-energy photons coming from near the Sun woul… ▽ More

Spaces with Noetherian cohomology
Abstract: Is the cohomology of the classifying space of a p-compact group, with Noetherian twisted coefficients, a Noetherian module? This note provides, over the ring of p-adic integers, such a generalization to p-compact groups of the Evens-Venkov Theorem. We consider the cohomology of a space with coefficients in a module, and we compare Noetherianity over the field with p elements, with Noetherianity ov… ▽ More

Reduced, tame and exotic fusion systems
Abstract: We define here two new classes of saturated fusion systems, reduced fusion systems and tame fusion systems. These are motivated by our attempts to better understand and search for exotic fusion systems: fusion systems which are not the fusion systems of any finite group. Our main theorems say that every saturated fusion system reduces to a reduced fusion system which is tame only if the original o… ▽ More

The Steenrod problem of realizing polynomial cohomology rings
Abstract: In this paper we completely classify which graded polynomial R-algebras in finitely many even degree variables can occur as the singular cohomology of a space with coefficients in R, a 1960 question of N. E. Steenrod, for a commutative ring R satisfying mild conditions. In the fundamental case R = Z, our result states that the only polynomial cohomology rings over Z which can occur, are tensor p… ▽ More

The classification of 2-compact groups
Abstract: We prove that any connected 2-compact group is classified by its 2-adic root datum, and in particular the exotic 2-compact group DI(4), constructed by Dwyer-Wilkerson, is the only simple 2-compact group not arising as the 2-completion of a compact connected Lie group. Combined with our earlier work with Moeller and Viruel for p odd, this establishes the full classification of p-compact groups, s… ▽ More

Automorphisms of p-compact groups and their root data
Abstract: We construct a model for the space of automorphisms of a connected p-compact group in terms of the space of automorphisms of its maximal torus normalizer and its root datum. As a consequence we show that any homomorphism to the outer automorphism group of a p-compact group can be lifted to a group action, analogous to a classical theorem of de Siebenthal for compact Lie groups. The model of this… ▽ More

The recurrence time of Dansgaard-Oeschger events and limits on the possible periodic component
Abstract: By comparing the high-resolution isotopic records from the GRIP and NGRIP icecores, we approximately separate the climate signal from local noise to obtain an objective criterion for defining Dansgaard-Oeschger events. Our analysis identifies several additional short lasting events, increasing the total number of DO events to 27 in the period 12-90 kyr BP. The quasi-regular occurrence of the DO… ▽ More

A finite loop space not rationally equivalent to a compact Lie group
Abstract: We construct a connected finite loop space of rank 66 and dimension 1254 whose rational cohomology is not isomorphic as a graded vector space to the rational cohomology of any compact Lie group, hence providing a counterexample to a classical conjecture. Aided by machine calculation we verify that our counterexample is minimal, i.e., that any finite loop space of rank less than 66 is in fact rat… ▽ More

The classification of p-compact groups for p odd
Abstract: A p-compact group, as defined by Dwyer and Wilkerson, is a purely homotopically defined p-local analog of a compact Lie group. It has long been the hope, and later the conjecture, that these objects should have a classification similar to the classification of compact Lie groups. In this paper we finish the proof of this conjecture, for p an odd prime, proving that there is a one-to-one corres… ▽ More
