We propose novel thermodynamic inequalities that apply to stationary asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. These inequalities incorporate the thermodynamic volume and refine the reverse isoperimetric inequality. To assess the validity of our conjectures, we apply them to a wide range of analytical black hole solutions, observing compelling evidence in their favour. Intriguingly, our findings indicate that these inequalities may also apply for black holes of non-spherical horizon topology, as we show their validity as well for thin black rings in AdS.

In asymptotically flat spacetimes, bearing the null geodesics reaching the future null infinity in mind, we propose new concepts, the "dark horizons" as generalizations of the photon sphere. They are defined in terms of the structure of escape/capture cones of photons with respect to a unit timelike vector field. More specifically, considering a two-sphere that represents a set of emission directions of photons, the dark horizons are located at positions where a hemisphere is marginally included in the capture and escape cones, respectively. We show that both of them are absent in the Minkowski spacetime, while they exist in spacetimes with black hole(s) under a certain condition. We derive the general properties of the dark horizons in spherically symmetric spacetimes and explicitly calculate the locations of the dark horizons in the Vaidya spacetime and the Kerr spacetime.

With the introduction of x-ray free electron laser sources around the world, new scientific approaches for visualizing matter at fundamental length and time-scales have become possible. As it relates to magnetism and "magnetic-type" systems, advanced methods are being developed for studying ultrafast magnetic responses on the time-scales at which they occur. We describe three capabilities which have the potential to seed new directions in this area and present original results from each: pump-probe x-ray scattering with low energy excitation, x-ray photon fluctuation spectroscopy, and ultrafast diffuse x-ray scattering. By combining these experimental techniques with advanced modeling together with machine learning, we describe how the combination of these domains allows for a new understanding in the field of magnetism. Finally, we give an outlook for future areas of investigation and the newly developed instruments which will take us there.

In this paper, we adopt the retarded time of the Bondi coordinate as the parameter for the null geodesics and then see that one can relax the assumptions imposed in our previous studies. As a consequence, we obtain a new null-access theorem for generic asymptotically flat spacetimes.

The ability to prepare systems in specific target states through quantum engineering is essential for realizing the new technologies promised by a second quantum revolution. Here, we recast the fundamental problem of state preparation in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces as ManQala, a quantum game inspired by the West African sowing game mancala. Motivated by optimal gameplay in solitaire mancala, where nested nearest-neighbor permutations and actions evolve the state of the game board to its target configuration, ManQala acts as a pre-processing approach for deterministically arranging particles in a quantum control problem. Once pre-processing with ManQala is complete, existing quantum control methods are applied, but now with a reduced search space. We find that ManQala-type strategies match, or outperform, competing approaches in terms of final state variance even in small-scale quantum state engineering problems where we expect the slightest advantage since the relative reduction in search space is the least. These results suggest that ManQala provides a rich platform for designing control protocols relevant to near-term intermediate-scale quantum technologies.

A new sufficient condition for photons emitted near future null infinity to reach future null infinity is derived by studying null geodesics in the Bondi coordinates in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In our previous works [arXiv:2106.03150, arXiv:2110.10917], such a condition was established for photons emitted in outward or tangential directions to constant radial surfaces. This paper improves our previous result by including photons emitted in inward directions. In four dimensions, imposing the same assumptions on the metric functions as previously, we prove that photons reach future null infinity if their initial values of $|dr/du|$ are smaller than a certain quantity, where $r$ and $u$ are the radial and retarded time coordinates, respectively. This quantity is determined by the asymptotic properties of the metric and is connected to the conjectured maximal luminosity. In higher dimensions, photons emitted with $dr/du>-(1-1/\sqrt{3})\approx -0.423$ are shown to reach future null infinity without the assumptions on the metric functions.

We present an event-triggered boundary control scheme for hyperbolic systems. The trigger condition is based on predictions of the state on determinate sets, where the control input is only updated if the predictions deviate from the reference by a given margin. Closed-loop stability and absence of Zeno behaviour is established analytically. For the special case of linear systems, the trigger condition can be expressed in closed-form as an $L_2$-scalar product of kernels with the distributed state. The presented controller can also be combined with existing observers to solve the event-triggered output-feedback control problem. A numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Bearing in mind our previous study on asymptotic behavior of null geodesics near future null infinity, we analyze the behavior of geometrical quantities such as a certain extrinsic curvature and Riemann tensor in the Bondi coordinates. In the sense of asymptotics, the condition for an $r$-constant hypersurface to be a photon surface is shown to be controlled by a key quantity that determines the fate of photons initially emitted in angular directions. As a consequence, in four dimensions, such a non-expanding photon surface can be realized even near future null infinity in the presence of enormous energy flux for a short period of time. By contrast, in higher-dimensional cases, no such a photon surface can exist. This result also implies that the dynamically transversely trap** surface, which is proposed as an extension of a photon surface, can have an arbitrarily large radius in four dimensions.

We investigate the behavior of null geodesics near future null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In particular, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of null geodesics that correspond to worldlines of photons initially emitted in the directions tangential to the constant radial surfaces in the Bondi coordinates. The analysis is performed for general dimensions, and the difference between the four-dimensional cases and the higher-dimensional cases is stressed. In four dimensions, some assumptions are required to guarantee the null geodesics to reach future null infinity, in addition to the conditions of asymptotic flatness. Without these assumptions, gravitational waves may prevent photons from reaching null infinity. In higher dimensions, by contrast, such assumptions are not necessary, and gravitational waves do not affect the asymptotic behavior of null geodesics.

We present a control design for semilinear and quasilinear 2x2 hyperbolic partial differential equations with the control input at one boundary and a nonlinear ordinary differential equation coupled to the other. The controller can be designed to asymptotically stabilize the system at an equilibrium or relative to a reference signal. Two related but different controllers for semilinear and general quasilinear systems are presented and the additional challenges in quasilinear systems are discussed. Moreover, we present an observer that estimates the distributed PDE state and the unmeasured ODE state from measurements at the actuated boundary only, which can be used to also solve the output feedback control problem.

We present a predictive feedback control method for a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with one boundary control input. Assuming exact model knowledge, convergence to the origin, or tracking at the uncontrolled boundary, are achieved in finite time. A robustness certificate is provided, showing that at least under more restrictive assumptions on the system coefficients, the control method has inherent robustness properties with respect to small errors in the model, measurements and control input. Rigorous, although conservative conditions on the time derivative of the initial condition and on the design parameter controlling the convergence speed are given to ensure global existence of the solution for initial conditions with arbitrary infinity-norm.

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome treatment requires fetoscopic laser photocoagulation of placental vascular anastomoses to regulate blood flow to both fetuses. Limited field-of-view (FoV) and low visual quality during fetoscopy make it challenging to identify all vascular connections. Mosaicking can align multiple overlap** images to generate an image with increased FoV, however, existing techniques apply poorly to fetoscopy due to the low visual quality, texture paucity, and hence fail in longer sequences due to the drift accumulated over time. Deep learning techniques can facilitate in overcoming these challenges. Therefore, we present a new generalized Deep Sequential Mosaicking (DSM) framework for fetoscopic videos captured from different settings such as simulation, phantom, and real environments. DSM extends an existing deep image-based homography model to sequential data by proposing controlled data augmentation and outlier rejection methods. Unlike existing methods, DSM can handle visual variations due to specular highlights and reflection across adjacent frames, hence reducing the accumulated drift. We perform experimental validation and comparison using 5 diverse fetoscopic videos to demonstrate the robustness of our framework.
