$L^T_p-$ functions on locally compact groups

Dynamic Silos: Increased Modularity in Intra-organizational Communication Networks during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract: Workplace communications around the world were drastically altered by Covid-19, related work-from-home orders, and the rise of remote work. To understand these shifts, we analyzed aggregated, anonymized metadata from over 360 billion emails within 4,361 organizations worldwide. To understand these shifts, we analyzed aggregated, anonymized metadata from over 360 billion emails within 4,361 organizations worldwide. By comparing month-to-month and year-over-year metrics, we examined changes in network community structures over 24 months before and after Covid-19. We also examined shifts across multiple communication media (email, instant messages, video calls, and calendaring software) within a single global organization, and compared them to communications shifts that were driven by changes in formal organizational structure. We found that, in 2020, organizations around the world became more siloed than in 2019, evidenced by increased modularity. This shift was concurrent with decreased stability within silos. Collectively, our analyses indicate that following the onset of Covid-19, employees began to shift more dynamically between subcommunities (teams, workgroups or functional areas). At the same time, once in a subcommunity, they limited their communication to other members of that community. We term these network changes dynamic silos. We provide initial insights into the meaning and implications of dynamic silos for the future of work. △ Less

Comparative Analysis of Oscillating Wave Energy Converter Performance in Southern Coast of the Caspian Sea

The next step is an applicable… ▽ More The importance of renewable energy supplies, particularly ocean wave energy, has become undeniable globally in the last two decades. Iran is not an exception due to the long barrier with deep water in the north and south of the country. Because of this potential, the first step is chosen in order to locate a suitable site for installing wave energy converters (WECs). The next step is an applicable design for converters based on conditional and geometrical parameters. In this study, locations with maximum potential are chosen, and conditional parameters are used as input data to design the oscillating converter geometrically. Next, geometric parameters are simulated by the ABAQUS program, and for verifying it, three case study sites in the Caspian sea are considered and designed in the WEC-Sim module in MATLAB to evaluate conditional and geometrical parameters simultaneously. Finally, both results are compared with each other. It is found that the Nowshahr port has more potential than Anzali and Amirabad port, and after considering the proposed design, the converter's productivity raised by 63 percent. It is also written that the flap's optimal width is recommended to be between 18 and 23 meters. Moreover, changes in dam** incident forces have a direct relationship with the system's efficiency, and the value of this force is more on Nowshahr in pitch degree of freedom. Finally, according to the software outputs, it can be concluded that the force applied to the power take-off system behind the converter flap, which is the most crucial force in evaluating the performance of the converter as the leading indicator, is derived and compared between studied sites. △ Less

Performance investigation on the different wave energy converters layouts in real wave scenarios

Wave energy technologies need more investigations to reach commercial developments. In this paper, an array of interacting wave energy converters (WECs) with various arrangements and layout size is considered. The WEC model is a symmetrical, spherical and fully submerged buoy with three tethers. A frequency-domain model is derived by using linear potential theory. Numerical simulations and parametric examinations are designed in order to evaluate the distance influence among buoys with a pre-defined arrangement on the total power output of the array, based on the irregular wave models. With regard to validating the best-found layout, we perform a landscape analysis experiment using a grid search technique. These experiments are evaluated in four real wave scenarios from south of Australia. Experiments show that the distance between WECs and also the relative angle of the layout to significant wave direction plays a pivotal role to harness more power from the incident waves. Furthermore, we observe that increasing the number of WEC in the layout leads to a rise in the optimal distance among WECs. The maximum power of an array produced by a 5 buoy layout arrangement with 185 $m$ distance among buoys in the Tasmania wave scenario with a relative angle of 63 degrees to the significant in-site wave direction. △ Less

A Hybrid Two-layer Feature Selection Method Using GeneticAlgorithm and Elastic Net

However, the increase in feature space dimensionality, comparing to the number of observations, poses a severe challenge to many existing feature selection methods with respect to computational efficiency and prediction performance. This paper presents a new hybrid two-layer feature selection approach that combines a wrapper and an embedded method in constructing an appropriate subset of predictors. In the first layer of the proposed method, the Genetic Algorithm(GA) has been adopted as a wrapper to search for the optimal subset of predictors, which aims to reduce the number of predictors and the prediction error. As one of the meta-heuristic approaches, GA is selected due to its computational efficiency; however, GAs do not guarantee the optimality. To address this issue, a second layer is added to the proposed method to eliminate any remaining redundant/irrelevant predictors to improve the prediction accuracy. Elastic Net(EN) has been selected as the embedded method in the second layer because of its flexibility in adjusting the penalty terms in regularization process and time efficiency. This hybrid two-layer approach has been applied on a Maize genetic dataset from NAM population, which consists of multiple subsets of datasets with different ratio of the number of predictors to the number of observations. Investigating Wave Energy Potential in Southern Coasts of the Caspian Sea Using Grey Wolf Optimizer Algorithm

Therefore, areas around ni… ▽ More There is a significantly accelerating trend in the application of the marine wave energy converters in recent years. As a result, it is imperative to adopt a suitable point for implementing these systems. Besides, the Caspian Sea, as one of the most important marine renewable energy sources in Asia, is capable of supplying the coastal areas with a large amount of energy. Therefore, areas around nine ports in the southern coasts of the Caspian Sea were selected to measure their wave energy potential. Initially, the amount of energy on these points was measured using the irregular energy theory. It was observed that the wave power was higher in the southwestern areas (within the Kiashahr coast and Anzali port) than the southeastern areas. A new approach was developed to compare these points and measure their fitnesses in supplying the maximum energy using the Grey Wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm and time history analysis. In this method, the optimal parameters were first extracted from the algorithm for assessing the points within the southern areas of the Caspian Sea. These values were regarded as the assessment indices. Then, the fitness of each point was obtained using the correlation function and the norm vector to present the most optimal position with maximum wave energy exploitation potential. This new approach was validated with analytical data, and its accuracy in predicting and comparing the wave power on different points was approved. Finally, by a side-by-side comparison of the parameters affecting the wave energy, the optimum range of significant wave height and wave energy period was achieved. △ Less
