Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-intrusive way to measure cortical hemodynamic activity. Predicting cognitive workload from fNIRS data has taken on a diffuse set of methods. To be applicable in real-world settings, models are needed, which can perform well across different sessions as well as different subjects. However, most existing works assume that training and testing data come from the same subjects and/or cannot generalize well across never-before-seen subjects. Additional challenges imposed by fNIRS data include the high variations in inter-subject fNIRS data and also in intra-subject data collected across different blocks of sessions. To address these issues, we propose an effective method, referred to as the class-aware-block-aware domain adaptation (CABA-DA) which explicitly minimize intra-session variance by viewing different blocks from the same subject same session as different domains. We minimize the intra-class domain discrepancy and maximize the inter-class domain discrepancy accordingly. In addition, we propose an MLPMixer-based model for cognitive load classification. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed model has better performance compared with three different baseline models on three public-available datasets of cognitive workload. Two of them are collected from n-back tasks and one of them is from finger tap**. From our experiments, we also show the proposed contrastive learning method can also improve baseline models we compared with.

Circulatory system abnormalities might be an indicator of diseases or tissue damage. Early detection of vascular abnormalities might have an important role during treatment and also raise the patient's awarenes. Current detection methods for vascular imaging are high-cost, invasive, and mostly radiation-based. In this study, a low-cost and portable microcomputer-based tool has been developed as a near-infrared (NIR) superficial vascular imaging device. The device uses NIR light-emitting diode (LED) light at 850 nm along with other electronic and optical components. It operates as a non-contact and safe infrared (IR) imaging method in real-time. Image and video analysis are carried out using OpenCV (Open-Source Computer Vision), a library of programming functions mainly used in computer vision. Various tests were carried out to optimize the imaging system and set up a suitable external environment. To test the performance of the device, the images taken from three diabetic volunteers, who are expected to have abnormalities in the vascular structure due to the possibility of deformation caused by high glucose levels in the blood, were compared with the images taken from two non-diabetic volunteers. As a result, tortuosity was observed successfully in the superficial vascular structures, where the results need to be interpreted by the medical experts in the field to understand the underlying reasons. Although this study is an engineering study and does not have an intention to diagnose any diseases, the developed system here might assist healthcare personnel in early diagnosis and treatment follow-up for vascular structures and may enable further opportunities.

Software Engineering, as a discipline, has matured over the past 5+ decades. The modern world heavily depends on it, so the increased maturity of Software Engineering was an eventuality. Practices like testing and reliable technologies help make Software Engineering reliable enough to build industries upon. Meanwhile, Machine Learning (ML) has also grown over the past 2+ decades. ML is used more and more for research, experimentation and production workloads. ML now commonly powers widely-used products integral to our lives. But ML Engineering, as a discipline, has not widely matured as much as its Software Engineering ancestor. Can we take what we have learned and help the nascent field of applied ML evolve into ML Engineering the way Programming evolved into Software Engineering [1]? In this article we will give a whirlwind tour of Sibyl [2] and TensorFlow Extended (TFX) [3], two successive end-to-end (E2E) ML platforms at Alphabet. We will share the lessons learned from over a decade of applied ML built on these platforms, explain both their similarities and their differences, and expand on the shifts (both mental and technical) that helped us on our journey. In addition, we will highlight some of the capabilities of TFX that help realize several aspects of ML Engineering. We argue that in order to unlock the gains ML can bring, organizations should advance the maturity of their ML teams by investing in robust ML infrastructure and promoting ML Engineering education. We also recommend that before focusing on cutting-edge ML modeling techniques, product leaders should invest more time in adopting interoperable ML platforms for their organizations. In closing, we will also share a glimpse into the future of TFX.

Terrorist attacks carried out by individuals or single cells have significantly accelerated over the last 20 years. This type of terrorism, defined as lone-actor (LA) terrorism, stands as one of the greatest security threats of our time. Research on LA behavior and characteristics has emerged and accelerated over the last decade. While these studies have produced valuable information on demographics, behavior, classifications, and warning signs, the relationship among these characters are yet to be addressed. Moreover, the means of radicalization and attacking have changed over decades. This study first identifies 25 binary behavioral characteristics of LAs and analyzes 192 LAs recorded on three different databases. Next, the classification is carried out according to first ideology, then to incident scene behavior via a virtual attacker-defender game, and, finally, according to the clusters obtained from the data. In addition, within each class, statistically significant associations and temporal relations are extracted using the A-priori algorithm. These associations would be instrumental in identifying the attacker type and intervene at the right time. The results indicate that while pre-9/11 LAs were mostly radicalized by the people in their environment, post-9/11 LAs are more diverse. Furthermore, the association chains for different LA types present unique characteristic pathways to violence and after-attack behavior.
