We show that the support of the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution in the complex plane exactly coincides with the $\varepsilon$-pseudospectrum in the consecutive limits $n \to \infty$ and $\varepsilon \to 0$. Furthermore, we provide a description of this support in terms of a single real-valued function on the complex plane. As a level set of this locally real analytic function, the spectral edge is a real analytic variety of dimension at most one.

As a prototype detector for the SHiP Surrounding Background Tagger (SBT), we constructed a cell (120 cm x 80 cm x 25 cm) made from corten steel that is filled with liquid scintillator (LS) composed of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO). The detector is equipped with two Wavelength-shifting Optical Modules (WOMs) for light collection of the primary scintillation photons. Each WOM consists of an acrylic tube that is dip-coated with a wavelength-shifting layer on its surface. Via internal total reflection, the secondary photons emitted by the molecules of the wavelength shifter are guided to a ring-shaped array of 40 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) coupled to the WOM for light detection. The granularity of these SiPM arrays provides an innovative method to gain spatial information on the particle crossing point. Several improvements in the detector design significantly increased the light yield with respect to earlier proof-of-principle detectors. We report on the performance of this prototype detector during an exposure to high-energy positrons at the DESY II test beam facility by measuring the collected integrated yield and the signal time-of-arrival in each of the SiPM arrays. The resulting detection efficiency and reconstructed energy deposition of the incident positrons are presented, as well as the spatial and time resolution of the detector. These results are then compared to Monte Carlo simulations.

We analyse the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of the Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathbb G(N,d/N)$ for $\sqrt{\log N} \ll d \lesssim \log N$. We show the existence of a localized phase, where each eigenvector is exponentially localized around a single vertex of the graph. This complements the completely delocalized phase previously established in [arXiv:2005.14180]. For large enough $d$, we establish a mobility edge by showing that the localized phase extends up to the boundary of the delocalized phase. We derive explicit asymptotics for the localization length up to the mobility edge and characterize its divergence near the phase boundary.
The proof is based on a rigorous verification of Mott's criterion for localization, comparing the tunnelling amplitude between localization centres with the eigenvalue spacing. The first main ingredient is a new family of global approximate eigenvectors, for which sharp enough estimates on the tunnelling amplitude can be established. The second main ingredient is a lower bound on the spacing of approximate eigenvalues. It follows from an anticoncentration result for these discrete random variables, obtained by a recursive application of a self-improving anticoncentration estimate due to Kesten.

We consider the adjacency matrix $A$ of the Erdős-Rényi graph on $N$ vertices with edge probability $d/N$. For $(\log \log N)^4 \ll d \lesssim \log N$, we prove that the eigenvalues near the spectral edge form asymptotically a Poisson process and the associated eigenvectors are exponentially localized. As a corollary, at the critical scale $d \asymp \log N$, the limiting distribution of the largest nontrivial eigenvalue does not match with any previously known distribution. Together with [arXiv:2005.14180], our result establishes the coexistence of a fully delocalized phase and a fully localized phase in the spectrum of $A$. The proof relies on a three-scale rigidity argument, which characterizes the fluctuations of the eigenvalues in terms of the fluctuations of sizes of spheres of radius 1 and 2 around vertices of large degree.

We analyse the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of a critical Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathbb G(N,d/N)$, where $d$ is of order $\log N$. We show that its spectrum splits into two phases: a delocalized phase in the middle of the spectrum, where the eigenvectors are completely delocalized, and a semilocalized phase near the edges of the spectrum, where the eigenvectors are essentially localized on a small number of vertices. In the semilocalized phase the mass of an eigenvector is concentrated in a small number of disjoint balls centred around resonant vertices, in each of which it is a radial exponentially decaying function. The transition between the phases is sharp and is manifested in a discontinuity in the localization exponent $γ(\mathbf w)$ of an eigenvector $\mathbf w$, defined through $\|\mathbf w\|_\infty / \|\mathbf w\|_2 = N^{-γ(\mathbf w)}$. Our results remain valid throughout the optimal regime $\sqrt{\log N} \ll d \leq O(\log N)$.

We consider non-Hermitian random matrices $X \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ with general decaying correlations between their entries. For large $n$, the empirical spectral distribution is well approximated by a deterministic density, expressed in terms of the solution to a system of two coupled non-linear $n \times n$ matrix equations. This density is interpreted as the Brown measure of a linear combination of free circular elements with matrix coefficients on a non-commutative probability space. It is radially symmetric, real analytic in the radial variable and strictly positive on a disk around the origin in the complex plane with a discontinuous drop to zero at the edge. The radius of the disk is given explicitly in terms of the covariances of the entries of $X$. We show convergence down to local spectral scales just slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing with an optimal rate of convergence.

We complete the analysis of the extremal eigenvalues of the the adjacency matrix $A$ of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(N,d/N)$ in the critical regime $d \asymp \log N$ of the transition uncovered in [arXiv:1704.02953,arXiv:1704.02945], where the regimes $d \gg \log N$ and $d \ll \log N$ were studied. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between vertices of degree at least $2d$ and nontrivial (excluding the trivial top eigenvalue) eigenvalues of $A / \sqrt{d}$ outside of the asymptotic bulk $[-2,2]$. This correspondence implies that the transition characterized by the appearance of the eigenvalues outside of the asymptotic bulk takes place at the critical value $d = d_* = \frac{1}{\log 4 - 1} \log N$. For $d < d_*$ we obtain rigidity bounds on the locations of all eigenvalues outside the interval $[-2,2]$, and for $d > d_*$ we show that no such eigenvalues exist. All of our estimates are quantitative with polynomial error probabilities.
Our proof is based on a tridiagonal representation of the adjacency matrix and on a detailed analysis of the geometry of the neighbourhood of the large degree vertices. An important ingredient in our estimates is a matrix inequality obtained via the associated nonbacktracking matrix and an Ihara-Bass formula [arXiv:1704.02945]. Our argument also applies to sparse Wigner matrices, defined as the Hadamard product of $A$ and a Wigner matrix, in which case the role of the degrees is replaced by the squares of the $\ell^2$-norms of the rows.

We study the unique solution $m$ of the Dyson equation \[ -m(z)^{-1} = z - a + S[m(z)] \] on a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with the constraint $\mathrm{Im}\,m\geq 0$. Here, $z$ lies in the complex upper half-plane, $a$ is a self-adjoint element of $\mathcal{A}$ and $S$ is a positivity-preserving linear operator on $\mathcal{A}$. We show that $m$ is the Stieltjes transform of a compactly supported $\mathcal{A}$-valued measure on $\mathbb{R}$. Under suitable assumptions, we establish that this measure has a uniformly $1/3$-Hölder continuous density with respect to the Lebesgue measure, which is supported on finitely many intervals, called bands. In fact, the density is analytic inside the bands with a square-root growth at the edges and internal cubic root cusps whenever the gap between two bands vanishes. The shape of these singularities is universal and no other singularity may occur. We give a precise asymptotic description of $m$ near the singular points. These asymptotics generalize the analysis at the regular edges given in the companion paper on the Tracy-Widom universality for the edge eigenvalue statistics for correlated random matrices [arXiv:1804.07744] and they play a key role in the proof of the Pearcey universality at the cusp for Wigner-type matrices [arXiv:1809.03971,arXiv:1811.04055]. We also extend the finite dimensional band mass formula from [arXiv:1804.07744] to the von Neumann algebra setting by showing that the spectral mass of the bands is topologically rigid under deformations and we conclude that these masses are quantized in some important cases.

We consider large random matrices $X$ with centered, independent entries which have comparable but not necessarily identical variances. Girko's circular law asserts that the spectrum is supported in a disk and in case of identical variances, the limiting density is uniform. In this special case, the local circular law by Bourgade et. al. [11,12] shows that the empirical density converges even locally on scales slightly above the typical eigenvalue spacing. In the general case, the limiting density is typically inhomogeneous and it is obtained via solving a system of deterministic equations. Our main result is the local inhomogeneous circular law in the bulk spectrum on the optimal scale for a general variance profile of the entries of $X$.

Once operational, the LSST will explore a wide range of astrophysical questions, from discovering "killer" asteroids to examining the nature of Dark Energy.
The LSST will generate on average 15 TB of data per night, and will require a comprehensive Data Management system to reduce the raw data to scientifically useful catalogs and images with minimum human intervention. These reductions will result in a real-time alert stream, and eleven data releases over the 10-year duration of LSST operations. To enable this processing, the LSST project is develo** a new, general-purpose, high-performance, scalable, well documented, open source data processing software stack for O/IR surveys. We consider the question: can the isotropy representation of an irreducible pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space be realized as a conformal holonomy group? Using recent results of Cap, Gover and Hammerl, we study the representations of SO(2,1), PSU(2,1) and PSp(2,1) as isotropy groups of irreducible symmetric spaces of signature (3,2), (4,4) and (6,8), respectively, describing the geometry induced by a conformal holonomy reduction to the corresponding subgroups. In the case of SO(2,1) we show that conformal manifolds with such a holonomy reduction are always locally conformally flat and hence this group cannot be a conformal holonomy group. This result completes the classification of irreducible conformal holonomy groups in Lorentzian signature. In the case of PSU(2,1), we show that conformal manifolds of signature (3,3) with this holonomy reduction carry, on an open dense subset, a canonical nearly para-Kaehler metric with positive Einstein constant. For PSp(2,1) we also show that there is an open dense subset endowed with a canonical Einstein metric in the conformal class. As a result, after restricting to an open dense subset the conformal holonomy must be a proper subgroup of PSU(2,1) or of PSp(2,1), respectively. Finally, using a recent result of Graham and Willse we prove the following general non-existence result: for a real-analytic, odd-dimensional conformal manifold, the conformal holonomy group can never be given by the isotropy representation of an irreducible pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space unless the isotropy is SO(p+1,q+1).

Transitive conformal holonomy groups

Abstract:
For $(M,[g])$ a conformal manifold of signature $(p,q)$ and dimension at least three, the conformal holonomy group $\mathrm{Hol}(M,[g]) \subset O(p+1,q+1)$ is an invariant induced by the canonical Cartan geometry of $(M,[g])$. We give a description of all possible connected conformal holonomy groups which act transitively on the Möbius sphere $S^{p,q}$, the homogeneous model space for conformal structures of signature $(p,q)$. The main part of this description is a list of all such groups which also act irreducibly on $\R^{p+1,q+1}$. For the rest, we show that they must be compact and act decomposably on $\R^{p+1,q+1}$, in particular, by known facts about conformal holonomy the conformal class $[g]$ must contain a metric which is locally isometric to a so-called special Einstein product.

Abstract:
In this note, we prove that the CR manifold which is induced from the canonical parabolic geometry of a quaternionic contact (qc) manifold via a Fefferman-type construction is equivalent to the CR twistor space of the qc manifold defined by O. Biquard.

Using the theory of Weyl structures, we give a natural generalization of the notion of essential conformal structures and conformal Killing fields to arbitrary parabolic geometries. We show that a parabolic structure is inessential whenever the automorphism group acts properly on the base space. As a corollary of the generalized Ferrand-Obata theorem proved by C. Frances, this proves a generalization of the "Lichnerowicz conjecture" for conformal Riemannian, strictly pseudo-convex CR, and quaternionic/octonionic contact manifolds in positive-definite signature. For an infinitesimal automorphism with a singularity, we give a generalization of the dictionary introduced by Frances for conformal Killing fields, which characterizes (local) essentiality via the so-called holonomy associated to a singularity of an infinitesimal automorphism.

Weyl connections and the local sphere theorem for quaternionic contact structures

We apply the theory of Weyl structures for parabolic geometries developed by A. Cap and J. Slovak in to compute, for a quaternionic contact (qc) structure, the Weyl connection associated to a choice of scale, i.e. to a choice of Carnot-Carathéodory metric in the conformal class. The result of this computation has applications to the study of the conformal Fefferman space of a qc manifold. In addition to this application, we are also able to easily compute a tensorial formula for the qc analog of the Weyl curvature tensor in conformal geometry and the Chern-Moser tensor in CR geometry. This tensor agrees with the formula derived via independent methods by S. Ivanov and D. Vasillev. However, as a result of our derivation of this tensor, its fundamental properties -- conformal covariance, and that its vanishing is a sharp obstruction to local flatness of the qc structure -- follow as easy corollaries from the general parabolic theory.

Equivalent characterizations of these spaces are proved: as conformal manifolds with symplectic conformal holonomy of the appropriate signature; as pseudo-Riemannian manifolds admitting conformal Killing fields satisfying a conformally invariant system of conditions analog to G. Sparling's criteria; and as the total space of a SO(3)- or $S^3$-bundle over a qc manifold with the conformally equivalent metrics defined directly by Biquard. Global as well as local results are acquired.

The geometry of conformally Einstein metrics with degenerate Weyl tensor
Authors:

Abstract:
The problem of characterizing conformally Einstein manifolds by tensorial conditions has been tackled recently in papers by M. Listing, and in work by A. R. Gover and P. Nurowski. Their results apply to metrics satisfying a "non-degeneracy" condition on the Weyl tensor \W. We investigate the geometry of the foliations arising on conformally Einstein spaces (with Riemannian signature) where this…

Their results apply to metrics satisfying a "non-degeneracy" condition on the Weyl tensor \W. We investigate the geometry of the foliations arising on conformally Einstein spaces (with Riemannian signature) where this condition fails, which then allows us to characterize a general class of locally conformally Einstein Riemannian manifolds with degenerate Weyl tensor.
