We report the results of thermodynamic measurements in external magnetic field of the cubic Ce-based cage compounds Ce$T_{2}$Cd$_{20}$ ($T$ = Ni,Pd). Our analysis of the heat-capacity data shows that the $Γ_7$ doublet is the ground state multiplet of the Ce$^{3+}$ ions. Consequently, for the $Γ_7$ doublet it can be theoretically shown that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the localized Ce moments mediated by the conduction electrons, must vanish at temperatures much lower than the energy separating the ground state doublet from the first excited $Γ_8$ quartet. Our findings provide an insight as to why no long range order has been observed in these compounds down to temperatures in the millikelvin range.

We perform measurements of the heat capacity as a function of temperature in URu$_{2-x}$Os$_x$Si$_2$ alloys. Our experimental results show that the critical temperature of the second-order phase transition increases while the value of the Sommerfeld coefficient in the ordered state decreases with an increase in osmium concentration. We also observe the increase in the values of the heat capacity at the critical temperature as well as a broadening of the critical fluctuations region with an increase in $x$. We analyze the experimental data using the Haule-Kotliar model which, in particular, identifies the 'hidden order' transition in the parent material URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a transition to a state with nonzero hexadecapole moment. We demonstrate that our experimental results are consistent with the predictions of that model.

Motivated by the possibility of observing the co-existence between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion Ce$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$CoIn$_5$ alloys, we studied how the samarium substitution on the cerium site affects the magnetic field-tuned-quantum criticality of stoicheometric CeCoIn$_5$ by performing specific heat and resistivity measurements. By applying an external magnetic field, we have observed Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid crossovers in the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat normalized by temperature and of the resistivity. We obtained the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) by extrapolating to zero temperature the temperature - magnetic field dependence at which the crossovers take place. Furthermore, a scaling analysis of the electronic specific heat is used to confirm the existence of the QCP. We have found that the magnitude of the magnetic-field-induced QCP decreases with increasing samarium concentration. Our analysis of heat capacity and resistivity data reveals a zero-field QCP for $x_\textrm{cr} \approx 0.15$, which falls inside the region where Sm ions antiferromagnetism and superconductivity co-exist.

Praseodymium-based 1-2-20 cage compounds Pr$T_2X_{20}$ ($T$ is generally Ti, V, Nb, Ru, Rh, Ir; and $X$ is either Al, Zn or Cd) provide yet another platform to study non-trivial electronic states of matter ranging from topological and magnetic orders to unconventional multipolar orders and superconductivity. In this paper, we report measurements of the electronic heat capacity in two Pr-based 1-2-20 materials: PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$ and PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$. We find that the lowest energy multiplet of the Pr $4f^2$ valence configuration is a $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet and the first excited triplet is assumed to be a magnetic $Γ_5$. By analyzing the dependence of the energy splitting between the ground and first excited singlet states on external magnetic field, we found that the maximum in the heat capacity corresponding to the Schottky anomaly in PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$, unlike PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$, shows pronounced linear dependence on external magnetic field at higher field values. This effect is associated with the exchange interactions between the field-induced magnetic dipole moments.

A heat capacity Schottky anomaly is present over the whole do** range. For the samples with $x > 0.5$, these Schottky anomaly peaks shift to lower temperature with increasing $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. We argue that this behavior reflects the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu moments, as the AFM transition is suppressed by $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. The Schottky peaks in the samples with $x \leq 0.5$ shift to higher temperatures with increasing magnetic field, signaling the presence of an internal magnetic field due to short-range AFM correlations induced by magnetic moments of neighboring Eu sites. In low $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, the Schottky gaps show a non-linear relationship with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$ as the magnetic moments become weakly magnetized. In high $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, the magnetic moments of Eu sites become completely aligned with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. Thus, increasing $H_{\textrm{ext}}$ does not further increase the magnetization, hence the Schottky gaps increase linearly with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$

Superconductivity in iron pnictides is unconventional and pairing may be mediated by magnetic fluctuations in the Fe-sublattice. Pressure is a clean method to explore superconductivity in iron based superconductors by tuning the ground state continuously without introducing disorder. Here we present a systematic high pressure transport study in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with $x=$ 0.057, which is near the antiferromagnetic instability. Resistivity $ρ=ρ_0+AT^{n}$ was studied under applied pressure up to 7.90 GPa. The parameter $n$ approaches a minimum value of $n\approx 1$ at a critical pressure $P_c =$ 3.65 GPa. Near $P_c$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ reaches a maximum value of 25.8 K. In addition, the superconducting diamagnetism at 2 K shows a sudden change around the same critical pressure. These results may be associated with a possible quantum critical point hidden inside the superconducting dome, near optimum $T_c$.

Motivated by current research efforts towards exploring the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in multiband electronic systems, we have investigated the effects of Eu substitution through thermodynamic measurements on the superconducting filled skutterudite alloys Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$. An increase in Eu concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature consistent with an increase of magnetic entropy due to Eu local moments. While the low-temperature heat capacity anomaly is present over the whole do** range, we find that in alloys with $x\leq0.5$ the Schottky peaks in the heat capacity in the superconducting state appear to be due to Zeeman splitting by an internal magnetic field. Our theoretical modeling suggests that this field is a result of the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations between the europium ions. For the samples with $x > 0.5$, the peaks in the heat capacity signal the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu moments.

We present results of specific heat, electrical resistance, and magnetoresistivity measurements on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconducting alloy Ce$_{0.91}$Yb$_{0.09}$CoIn$_5$. Non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid crossovers are clearly observed in the temperature dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ and resistivity data. Furthermore, we show that the Yb-doped sample with $x=0.09$ exhibits universality due to an underlying quantum phase transition without an applied magnetic field by utilizing the scaling analysis of $γ$. Fitting of the heat capacity and resistivity data based on existing theoretical models indicates that the zero-field quantum critical point is of antiferromagnetic origin. Finally, we found that at zero magnetic field the system undergoes a third-order phase transition at the temperature $T_{c3}\approx 7$ K.

We studied the temperature and magnetic field dependence of vortex dissipation and critical current in the mixed-state of unconventional superconducting alloys Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.044 \leq x \leq 0.100$) through current-voltage measurements. Our results reveal that all the electric field $E$ vs current density $j$ curves in the Ohmic regime merge to one point ($j_0,E_0$) and that there is a simple relationship between the critical current density $j_c$ and flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{\rm ff}$: $ρ_{\rm ff}/ρ_{\rm n} = (1- j_{c}/j_{0})^{-1}$, where $ρ_{\rm n}=E_0/j_0$ is the normal-state resistivity just above the superconducting transition. In addition, $E_0$ is positive for all five do**s, reflecting the abnormal behavior of the flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{\rm ff}$: it increases with decreasing magnetic field. In contrast, $E_0$ is negative for the conventional superconductor Nb since, as expected, $ρ_{\rm ff}$ decreases with decreasing magnetic field. Furthermore, in the under-doped and over-doped single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, the parameter $E_0$ remains temperature independent, while it decreases with increasing temperature for the single crystals around optimal do** ($ 0.060\leq x\leq 0.072 $). This result points to the co-existence of superconductivity with some other phase around optimal do**.

Measurements of the current-voltage characteristics were performed on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with do** level $0.044 \leq x \leq 0.1$. An unconventional increase in the flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{\rm ff}$ with decreasing magnetic field was observed across this do** range. Such an abnormal field dependence of flux-flow resistivity is in contrast with the linear field dependence of $ρ_{\rm ff}$ in conventional type-II superconductors, but is similar to the behavior recently observed in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. A significantly enhanced $ρ_{\rm ff}$ was found for the x=0.06 single crystals, implying a strong single-particle energy dissipation around the vortex cores. At different temperatures and fields and for a given do** concentration, the normalized $ρ_{\rm ff}$ scales with normalized field and temperature. The do** level dependence of these parameters strongly suggests that the abnormal upturn flux-flow resisitivity is likely related to the enhancement of spin fluctuations around the vortex cores of the optimally doped samples.

We find that an increase in Ce concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature from $T_{c}\sim 7.9$ K for $x=0$ to $T_c\sim 0.6$ K for $x=0.14$. Our analysis of the specific heat data for $x\leq 0.07$ reveals that superconductivity must develop in at least two bands: the superconducting order parameter has nodes on one Fermi pocket and remains fully gapped on the other. Both the nodal and nodeless gap values decrease, with the nodal gap being suppressed more strongly, with Ce substitution. Ultimately, the higher Ce concentration samples ($x>0.07$) display a nodeless gap only.

We investigated the thermodynamic properties of the Fe-based lightly disordered superconductor Ba$_{0.05}$K$_{0.95}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in external magnetic field H applied along the FeAs layers (H//ab planes). The superconducting (SC) transition temperature for this do** level is T$_c$ = 6.6 K. Our analysis of the specific heat C(T,H) measured for T < T$_c$ implies a sign change of the superconducting order parameter across different Fermi pockets. We provide experimental evidence for the three components superconducting order parameter. We find that all three components have values which are comparable with the previously reported ones for the stochiometric compound KFe$_2$As$_2$. Our data for C(T,H) and resistivity rho(T,H) can be interpreted in favor of the dominant orbital contribution to the pair-breaking mechanism at low fields, while Pauli limiting effect dominates at high fields, giving rise to a gapless superconducting state with only the leading non-zero gap.

In this paper we review some of our recent experimental and theoretical results on transport and thermodynamic properties of heavy-fermion alloys Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5. Charge transport measurements under magnetic field and pressure on these single crystalline alloys revealed that: (i) relatively small Yb substitution suppresses the field induced quantum critical point, with a complete suppression for nominal Yb do** x>0.20; (ii) the superconducting transition temperature Tc and Kondo lattice coherence temperature T* decrease with x, yet they remain finite over the wide range of Yb concentrations; (iii) both Tc and T* increase with pressure; (iv) there are two contributions to resistivity, which show different temperature and pressure dependences, implying that both heavy and light quasiparticles contribute to inelastic scattering. We also analyzed theoretically the pressure dependence of both T* and Tc within the composite pairing theory. In the purely static limit, when we ignore the lattice dynamics, we find that the composite pairing mechanism necessarily causes opposite behaviors of T* and Tc with pressure: if T* grows with pressure, Tc must decrease with pressure and vice versa.

Here we present our experimental and theoretical study of the effects of pressure on the transport properties of the heavy-fermion alloy Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 with x~0.07. We specifically choose this value of ytterbium concentration because the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point, which separates the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states at zero temperature, approaches zero, as has been established in previous studies. Our measurements show that pressure further suppresses quantum fluctuations in this alloy, just as it does in the parent compound CeCoIn5. In contrast, the square-root temperature dependent part of resistivity remains insensitive to pressure, indicating that the heavy-quasiparticles are not involved in the scattering processes leading to such a temperature dependent resistivity. We demonstrate that the growth of the coherence temperature with pressure, as well as the decrease of the residual resistivity, can be accurately described by employing the coherent potential approximation for a disordered Kondo lattice.

We investigated the onset of the many-body coherence in the f-orbital single crystalline alloys Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 through thermodynamic and magneto-transport measurements. Our study shows the evolution of the many-body electronic state as the Kondo lattice of Ce moments is transformed into an array of Ce impurities. Specifically, we observe a smooth crossover from the predominantly localized Ce moment regime to the predominantly itinerant Yb f-electronic states regime for about 50% of Yb do**. Our analysis of the residual resistivity data unveils the presence of correlations between Yb ions, while from our analysis of specific heat data we conclude that for 0.65<x<0.775, ytterbium f-electrons strongly interact with the conduction electrons while the Ce moments remain completely decoupled. The sub-linear temperature dependence of resistivity across the whole range of Yb concentrations suggest the presence of a nontrivial scattering mechanism for the conduction electrons.

One of the greatest challenges to Landau's Fermi liquid theory - the standard theory of metals - is presented by complex materials with strong electronic correlations. In these materials, non-Fermi liquid transport and thermodynamic properties are often explained by the presence of a continuous quantum phase transition which happens at a quantum critical point (QCP). A QCP can be revealed by applying pressure, magnetic field, or changing the chemical composition. In the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn$_5$, the QCP is assumed to play a decisive role in defining the microscopic structure of both normal and superconducting states. However, the question of whether QCP must be present in the material's phase diagram to induce non-Fermi liquid behavior and trigger superconductivity remains open. Here we show that the full suppression of the field-induced QCP in CeCoIn$_5$ by do** with Yb has surprisingly little impact on both unconventional superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid behavior. This implies that the non-Fermi liquid metallic behavior could be a new state of matter in its own right rather then a consequence of the underlying quantum phase transition.

We show magnetotransport results on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.0 \leq x \leq 0.13$) single crystals. We identify the low temperature resistance step at 23 K in the parent compound with the onset of filamentary superconductivity (FLSC), which is suppressed by an applied magnetic field in a similar manner to the suppression of bulk superconductivity (SC) in doped samples. FLSC is found to persist across the phase diagram until the long range antiferromagnetic order is completely suppressed. A significant suppression of FLSC occurs for $0.02<x<0.04$, the do** concentration where bulk SC emerges. Based on these results and the recent report of an electronic anisotropy maximum for 0.02 $\leq x \leq$ 0.04 [Science 329, 824 (2010)], we speculate that, besides spin fluctuations, orbital fluctuations may also play an important role in the emergence of SC in iron-based superconductors.

We show results on the vortex core dissipation through current-voltage measurements under applied pressure and magnetic field in the superconducting phase of CeCoIn$_5$. We find that as soon as the system becomes superconducting, the vortex core resistivity increases sharply as the temperature and magnetic field decrease. The sharp increase in flux flow resistivity is due to quasiparticle scattering on critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The strength of magnetic fluctuations below the superconducting transition suggests that magnetism is complimentary to superconductivity and therefore must be considered in order to fully account for the low-temperature properties of CeCoIn$_5$.

Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, are fully suppressed by $H^*\approx 15$ T, and suggest the presence of filamentary superconductivity nucleated at the antiphase domain walls in this material.

Electronic transport and magnetization measurements were performed on La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (LCMO/YBCO) bilayers below the superconducting transition temperature in order to study the interaction between magnetism and superconductivity. This study shows that a substantial number of weakly pinned vortices are induced in the YBCO layer by the large out-of-plane stray field in the domain walls. Their motion gives rise to large dissipation peaks at the coercive field. The angular dependent magnetoresistance (MR) data reveal the interaction between the stripe domain structure present in the LCMO layer and the vortices and anti-vortices induced in the YBCO layer by the out-of-plane stray field. In addition, this study shows that a superconducting surface spin valve effect is present in these bilayers as a result of the relative orientation between the magnetization at the LCMO/YBCO interface and the magnetization in the interior of the LCMO layer that can be tuned by the rotation of a small $H$. This latter finding will facilitate the development of superconductive magnetoresistive memory devices. These low-magnetic field MR data, furthermore, suggest that triplet superconductivity is induced in the LCMO layer, which is consistent with recent reports of triplet superconductivity in LCMO/YBCO/LCMO trilayers and LCMO/YBCO bilayers.

Magnetic relaxation measurements on a series of Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ ($x = 0.13, 0.34, 0.47$) single crystals were performed over a large field and temperature range in order to investigate the characteristics of the vortex matter across the second magnetization peak (SMP). The magnitude of the SMP varies non-monotonically with the Pr concentration; i.e., the irreversible magnetization normalized by its value at the onset field $H_{on}$ displays a maximum for the $x = 0.34$ single crystal. The two characteristic fields, $H_{on}$ and $H_{sp}$, follow different temperature $T$ dependences: $H_{on} \propto T^{ν_{on}}$ and $H_{sp} \propto [1-(T/T_{c})^{2}]^{ν_{sp}}$. The extracted values of the apparent activation energy $U^\ast$ and the creep exponent $μ$ display a maximum at a field $H_{on} < H^\ast < H_{sp}$. Their field dependences point toward the coexistence of both elastic and plastic creep for $H > H_{on}$. The degree of participation of each creep mechanism is determined by the charge carrier density, which controls both the elastic properties of the vortex matter and the pinning potential.

Magnetization and torque measurements were performed on CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals to study the mixed-state thermodynamics. These measurements allow the determination of both paramagnetic and vortex responses in the mixed-state magnetization. The paramagnetic magnetization is suppressed in the mixed state with the spin susceptibility increasing with increasing magnetic field. The dependence of spin susceptibility on magnetic field is due to the fact that heavy electrons contribute both to superconductivity and paramagnetism and a large Zeeman effect exists in this system. No anomaly in the vortex response was found within the investigated temperature and field range.

The normal-state torque is given by $τ_n \propto H^4(1+T/T_K)^{-1}\sin 4φ$. The reversible part of the mixed-state torque, obtained after subtracting the corresponding normal state torque, shows also a four-fold symmetry. In addition, sharp peaks are present in the irreversible torque at angles of $π/$4, 3$π$/4, 5$π$/4, 7$π$/4, etc. Both the four-fold symmetry in the reversible torque and the sharp peaks in the irreversible torque of the mixed state imply $d_{xy}$ symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. The field and temperature dependences of the reversible mixed-state torque provide further evidence for $d_{xy}$ wave symmetry. The four-fold symmetry in the normal state has a different origin since it has different field and temperature dependences than the one in the mixed state. The possible reasons of the normal state four-fold symmetry are discussed.

A large paramagnetic effect is found in the normal state. Torque measurements in the mixed state were also performed. The torque curves show sharp hysteresis peaks at $θ= 90^{o}$ ($θ$ is the angle between $H$ and the $c-$axis of the crystal), a result of intrinsic pinning of vortices. The anisotropy $γ\equiv \sqrt{m_{c}/m_{a}}$ in the mixed state was determined from the reversible part of the vortex contribution to the torque signal using Kogan's model [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{38}, 7049 (1988)]. The anisotropy $γ$ decreases with increasing magnetic field and temperature. The fact that $γ$ is not a constant points towards a multiband scenario in this heavy fermion material.

For this goal, temperature and angle dependent out-of-plane resistivity measurements were carried out both below and above the critical temperature. We found that the Ambegaokar-Halperin relationship [V. Ambegaokar, and B. I. Halperin, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{22}, 1364 (1969)] depicts very well the angular magnetoresistivity in the investigated range of field and temperature. The main finding is that the in-plane phase fluctuations decouple the layers above the critical temperature and the charge transport is governed only by the quasiparticles. We also have calculated the interlayer Josephson critical current density, which was found to be much smaller than the one predicted by the theory of layered superconductors. This discrepancy could be a result of the d-wave symmetry of the order parameter and/or of the non BCS temperature dependence of the c-axis penetration length.

We report an experimental study of the time dependence of resistivity of a La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ ultrathin film in order to elucidate the underlying mechanism for metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance CMR effect. There is a clear change of sign in the resistive relaxation rate across the metal-insulator transition driven by temperature or magnetic field. When measuring in increasing temperature or decreasing magnetic field, the resistivity increases with time in the metallic state but decreases with time in the insulating state. These relaxation processes indicate that the metal-insulator transition and the associated CMR are a direct result of phase separation and of percolation of the metallic phase.

Below the Curie transition temperature $T_c=$ 125 K, $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}$ display almost the same temperature dependence with an up-turn around 50 K. In the metallic regime (50 K $\leq T \leq$ 110 K), both $ρ_{ab}(T)$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ follow a $T^{9/2}$ dependence, consistent with the two-magnon scattering. We found that the value of the proportionality coefficient $B_{ab}^{fit}$ and the ratio of the exchange interaction $J_{ab}/J_c$ obtained by fitting the data are in excellent agreement with the calculated $B_{ab}$ based on the two-magnon model and $J_{ab}/J_c$ deduced from neutron scattering, respectively. This provides further support for this scattering mechanism. At even lower $T$, in the non-metallic regime ($T<$ 50 K), {\it both} the in-plane $σ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $σ_{c}$ conductivities obey a $T^{1/2}$ dependence, consistent with weak localization effects. Hence, this demonstrates the three-dimensional metallic nature of the bilayer manganite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ at $T<T_c$.

The large ($10^2 - 10^5$) and strongly temperature dependent resistive anisotropy $η= (σ_{ab}/σ_c)^{1/2}$ of cuprates perhaps holds the key to understanding their normal state in-plane $σ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $σ_{c}$ conductivities. It can be shown that $η$ is determined by the ratio of the phase coherence lengths $\ell_i$ in the respective directions: $σ_{ab}/σ_c = \ell_{ab}^2/\ell_{c}^2$. In…

In layered crystals in which the out-of-plane transport is incoherent, $\ell_{c}$ is fixed, equal to the interlayer spacing. As a result, the T-dependence of $η$ is determined by that of $\ell_{ab}$, and vice versa, the in-plane phase coherence length can be obtained directly by measuring the resistive anisotropy. We present data for hole-doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ ($6.3 < y < 6.9$) and $Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ ($0 < x \leq 0.55$) and show that $σ_{ab}$ of crystals with different do** levels can be well described by a two parameter universal function of the in-plane phase coherence length. In the electron-doped $Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-y}$, the dependence $σ_{ab}(η)$ indicates a crossover from incoherent to coherent transport in the c-direction.

We present a novel approach to the analysis of the normal state in-plane $σ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $σ_{c}$ conductivities of anisotropic layered crystals such as oxygen deficient $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{x}$. It can be shown that the resistive anisotropy is determined by the ratio of the phase coherence lengths in the respective directions; i.e., $σ_{ab}/σ_c=\ell_{ab}^2/\ell_c^2$. From the idea that at…

From the idea that at all do** levels and temperatures $T$ the out-of-plane transport in these crystals is incoherent, follows that $\ell_c$ is T-independent, equal to the spacing $\ell_0$ between the neighboring bilayers. Thus, the T-dependence of $\ell_{ab}$ is given by the measured anisotropy, and $σ_{ab}(\ell_{ab})$ dependence is obtained by plotting $σ_{ab}$ vs $\ell=(σ_{ab}/σ_c)^{1/2}\ell_0$. The analysis of several single crystals of $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{x}$ ($6.35<x<6.93$) shows that for all of them $σ_{ab}(\ell)$ is described by a universal dependence $σ_{ab}/\barσ=f(\ell/\bar\ell)$ with do** dependent parameters $\barσ$ and $\bar\ell$.

We show that the resistive anisotropy of an anisotropic medium is determined by the ratio of the phase coherence lengths. In layered crystals in which the interlayer transport is incoherent, the out-of-plane phase coherence length is fixed and temperature independent. This leads to a temperature dependent resistive anisotropy and to the coexistence of metallic in-plane and non-metallic out-of-plane conductivities. Our approach provides a description of the c-axis conductivity in the highly nonclassical regime, characteristic of layered cuprates.

We report transport and magnetic relaxation measurements in the mixed state of strongly underdoped Y_{1-x}Pr_{x}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7} crystals. A transition from thermally activated flux creep to temperature independent quantum flux creep is observed in both transport and magnetic relaxation at temperatures T * 5 K. Flux transformer measurements indicate that the crossover to quantum creep is preceded by a coupling transition. Based on these observations we argue that below the coupling transition the current is confined within a very narrow layer beneath the current contacts.
