Abstract:
A nonnegative integer $p$ is realizable by a graph-theoretical invariant $I$ if there exist a graph $G$ such that $I(G) = p$. The inverse problem for $I$ consists of finding all nonnegative integers $p$ realizable by $I$. A nonnegative integer $p$ is realizable by a graph-theoretical invariant $I$ if there exist a graph $G$ such that $I(G) = p$. The inverse problem for $I$ consists of finding all nonnegative integers $p$ realizable by $I$. In this paper, we consider and solve the inverse problem for the Mostar index, a recently introduced graph-theoretical invariant which attracted a lot of attention in recent years in both the mathematical and the chemical community. We show that a nonnegative integer is realizable by the Mostar index if and only if it is not equal to one. Besides presenting the complete solution to the problem, we also present some empirical observations and outline several open problems and possible directions for further research.

Abstract:
The transmission ${\rm Tr}_G(u)$ of a vertex $u$ of a connected graph $G$ is the sum of distances from $u$ to all other vertices. $G$ is a stepwise transmission irregular (STI) graph if $|{\rm Tr}_G(u) - {\rm Tr}_G(v)|= 1$ holds for any edge $uv\in E(G)$. In this paper, generalized STI graphs are introduced as the graphs $G$ such that for some $k\ge 1$ we have $|{\rm Tr}_G(u) - {\rm Tr}_G(v)|= k$…

In this paper, generalized STI graphs are introduced as the graphs $G$ such that for some $k\ge 1$ we have $|{\rm Tr}_G(u) - {\rm Tr}_G(v)|= k$ for any edge $uv$ of $G$. It is proved that generalized STI graphs are bipartite and that as soon as the minimum degree is at least $2$, they are 2-edge connected. Among the trees, the only generalized STI graphs are stars. The diameter of STI graphs is bounded and extremal cases discussed. The Cartesian product operation is used to obtain highly connected generalized STI graphs. Several families of generalized STI graphs are constructed.

Two extremal families appear in all the cases, balanced complete bipartite graphs of odd order and the so called odd hatted cycles.

Abstract:
The relation between the Wiener index $W(G)$ and the eccentricity $\varepsilon(G)$ of a graph $G$ is studied. Lower and upper bounds on $W(G)$ in terms of $\varepsilon(G)$ are proved and extremal graphs characterized. A Nordhaus-Gaddum type result on $W(G)$ involving $\varepsilon(G)$ is given. A sharp upper bound on the Wiener index of a tree in terms of its eccentricity is proved. It is shown tha…

It is shown that in the class of trees of the same order, the difference $W(T) - \varepsilon(T)$ is minimized on caterpillars. An exact formula for $W(T) - \varepsilon(T)$ in terms of the radius of a tree $T$ is obtained. A lower bound on the eccentricity of a tree in terms of its radius is also given. Two conjectures are proposed. The first asserts that the difference $W(G) - \varepsilon(G)$ does not increase after contracting an edge of $G$. The second conjecture asserts that the difference between the Wiener index of a graph and its eccentricity is largest on paths.

On the difference between the eccentric connectivity index and eccentric distance sum of graphs
Authors:
Yaser Alizadeh,
Sandi Klavžar
Abstract:
The eccentric connectivity index of a graph $G$ is $ξ^c(G) = \sum_{v \in V(G)}\varepsilon(v)°(v)$, and the eccentric distance sum is $ξ^d(G) = \sum_{v \in V(G)}\varepsilon(v)D(v)$, where $\varepsilon(v)$ is the eccentricity of $v$, and $D(v)$ the sum of distances between $v$ and the other vertices. A lower and an upper bound on $ξ^d(G) - ξ^c(G)$ is given for an arbitrary graph $G$. Regular graphs…

A lower and an upper bound on $ξ^d(G) - ξ^c(G)$ is given for an arbitrary graph $G$. Regular graphs with diameter at most $2$ and joins of cocktail-party graphs with complete graphs form the graphs that attain the two equalities, respectively. Sharp lower and upper bounds on $ξ^d(T) - ξ^c(T)$ are given for arbitrary trees. Sharp lower and upper bounds on $ξ^d(G)+ξ^c(G)$ for arbitrary graphs $G$ are also given, and a sharp lower bound on $ξ^d(G)$ for graphs $G$ with a given radius is proved.

Abstract:
Zeeman spectroscopy is used to demonstrate that phenomenological crystal-field parameters determined for the two $C_1$ point-group sites in Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ may be transferred to other ions. The two crystallographic six- and seven-coordinate substitutional sites may be distinguished by comparing the spectra with crystal-field calculations.
