This paper presents an original approach to vehicle obstacle avoidance. It involves the development of a nonlinear Model Predictive Contouring Control, which uses torque vectoring to stabilise and drive the vehicle in evasive manoeuvres at the limit of handling. The proposed algorithm combines motion planning, path tracking and vehicle stability objectives, prioritising collision avoidance in emergencies. The controller's prediction model is a nonlinear double-track vehicle model based on an extended Fiala tyre to capture the nonlinear coupled longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The controller computes the optimal steering angle and the longitudinal forces per each of the four wheels to minimise tracking error in safe situations and maximise the vehicle-to-obstacle distance in emergencies. Thanks to the optimisation of the longitudinal tyre forces, the proposed controller can produce an extra yaw moment, increasing the vehicle's lateral agility to avoid obstacles while kee** the vehicle stable. The optimal forces are constrained in the tyre friction circle not to exceed the tyres and vehicle capabilities. In a high-fidelity simulation environment, we demonstrate the benefits of torque vectoring, showing that our proposed approach is capable of successfully avoiding obstacles and kee** the vehicle stable while driving a double-lane change manoeuvre, in comparison to baselines lacking torque vectoring or collision avoidance prioritisation.

Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called ``Awareness Inside'', a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems.

For the autonomous operation of articulated vehicles at distribution centers, accurate positioning of the vehicle is of the utmost importance. Automation of these vehicle poses several challenges, e.g. large swept path, asymmetric steering response, large slide slip angles of non-steered trailer axles and trailer instability while reversing. Therefore, a validated vehicle model is required that accurately and efficiently predicts the states of the vehicle. Unlike forward driving, open-loop validation methods can not be used for reverse driving of articulated vehicles due to their unstable dynamics. This paper proposes an approach to stabilize the unstable pole of the system and compares three vehicle models (kinematic, non-linear single track and multibody dynamics model) against real-world test data obtained from low-speed experiments at a distribution center. It is concluded that single track non-linear model has a better performance in comparison to other models for large articulation angles and reverse driving maneuvers.

This paper proposes a non-linear Model Predictive Contouring Control (MPCC) for obstacle avoidance in automated vehicles driven at the limit of handling. The proposed controller integrates motion planning, path tracking and vehicle stability objectives, prioritising obstacle avoidance in emergencies. The controller's prediction model is a non-linear single-track vehicle model with the Fiala tyre to capture the vehicle's non-linear behaviour. The MPCC computes the optimal steering angle and brake torques to minimise tracking error in safe situations and maximise the vehicle-to-obstacle distance in emergencies. Furthermore, the MPCC is extended with the tyre friction circle to fully exploit the vehicle's manoeuvrability and stability. The MPCC controller is tested using real-time rapid prototy** hardware to prove its real-time capability. The performance is compared with a state-of-the-art Model Predictive Control (MPC) in a high-fidelity simulation environment. The double lane change scenario results demonstrate a significant improvement in successfully avoiding obstacles and maintaining vehicle stability.

This paper proposes a novel vehicle sideslip angle estimator, which uses the physical knowledge from an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) based on a non-linear single-track vehicle model to enhance the estimation accuracy of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The model-based and data-driven approaches interact mutually, and both use the standard inertial measurement unit and the tyre forces measured by load sensing technology. CNN benefits from the UKF the capacity to leverage the laws of physics. Concurrently, the UKF uses the CNN outputs as sideslip angle pseudo-measurement and adaptive process noise parameters. The back-propagation through time algorithm is applied end-to-end to the CNN and the UKF to employ the mutualistic property. Using a large-scale experimental dataset of 216 manoeuvres containing a great diversity of vehicle behaviours, we demonstrate a significant improvement in the accuracy of the proposed architecture over the current state-of-art hybrid approach combined with model-based and data-driven techniques. In the case that a limited dataset is provided for the training phase, the proposed hybrid approach still guarantees estimation robustness.

This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of model-based and data-driven approaches and analyses the benefits of using measured tyre forces for vehicle sideslip angle estimation. The model-based approaches are based on an extended Kalman filter and an unscented Kalman filter, in which the measured tyre forces are utilised in the observation model. An adaptive covariance matrix is introduced to minimise the tyre model mismatch during evasive manoeuvres. For data-driven approaches, feed forward and recurrent neural networks are evaluated. Both approaches use the standard inertial measurement unit and the tyre force measurements as inputs. Using the large-scale experimental dataset of 216 manoeuvres, we demonstrate a significant improvement in accuracy using data-driven vs. model-based approaches. Tyre force measurements improve the performance of both model-based and data-driven approaches, especially in the non-linear regime of tyres.

This paper presents a novel methodology to auto-tune an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). It involves using a Two-Stage Bayesian Optimisation (TSBO), based on a t-Student Process to optimise the process noise parameters of a UKF for vehicle sideslip angle estimation. Our method minimises performance metrics, given by the average sum of the states' and measurement' estimation error for various vehicle manoeuvres covering a wide range of vehicle behaviour. The predefined cost function is minimised through a TSBO which aims to find a location in the feasible region that maximises the probability of improving the current best solution. Results on an experimental dataset show the capability to tune the UKF in 79.9% less time than using a genetic algorithm (GA) and the overall capacity to improve the estimation performance in an experimental test dataset of 9.9% to the current state-of-the-art GA.

Most adversarial attack defense methods rely on obfuscating gradients. These methods are successful in defending against gradient-based attacks; however, they are easily circumvented by attacks which either do not use the gradient or by attacks which approximate and use the corrected gradient. Defenses that do not obfuscate gradients such as adversarial training exist, but these approaches generally make assumptions about the attack such as its magnitude. We propose a classification model that does not obfuscate gradients and is robust by construction without assuming prior knowledge about the attack. Our method casts classification as an optimization problem where we "invert" a conditional generator trained on unperturbed, natural images to find the class that generates the closest sample to the query image. We hypothesize that a potential source of brittleness against adversarial attacks is the high-to-low-dimensional nature of feed-forward classifiers which allows an adversary to find small perturbations in the input space that lead to large changes in the output space. On the other hand, a generative model is typically a low-to-high-dimensional map**. While the method is related to Defense-GAN, the use of a conditional generative model and inversion in our model instead of the feed-forward classifier is a critical difference. Unlike Defense-GAN, which was shown to generate obfuscated gradients that are easily circumvented, we show that our method does not obfuscate gradients. We demonstrate that our model is extremely robust against black-box attacks and has improved robustness against white-box attacks compared to naturally trained, feed-forward classifiers.

This paper presents a safe imitation learning approach for autonomous vehicle driving, with attention on real-life human driving data and experimental validation. In order to increase occupant's acceptance and gain drivers' trust, the autonomous driving function needs to provide a both safe and comfortable behavior such as risk-free and naturalistic driving. Our goal is to obtain such behavior via imitation learning of a planning policy from human driving data. In particular, we propose to incorporate barrier functions and smooth spline-based motion parametrization in the training loss function. The advantage is twofold: improving safety of the learning algorithm, while reducing the amount of needed training data. Moreover, the behavior is learned from highway driving data, which is collected consistently by a human driver and then processed towards a specific driving scenario. For development validation, a digital twin of the real test vehicle, sensors, and traffic scenarios are reconstructed toward high-fidelity and physics-based modeling technologies. These models are imported to simulation tools and co-simulated with the proposed algorithm for validation and further testing. Finally, we present experimental results and analyses, and compare with the conventional imitation learning technique (behavioral cloning) to justify the proposed development.

In this article, we propose a tractable nonlinear fault isolation filter along with explicit performance bounds for a class of nonlinear dynamical systems. We consider the presence of additive and multiplicative faults, occurring simultaneously and through an identical dynamical relationship, which represents a relevant case in several application domains. The proposed filter architecture combines tools from model-based approaches in the control literature and regression techniques from machine learning. To this end, we view the regression operator through a system-theoretic perspective to develop operator bounds that are then utilized to derive performance bounds for the proposed estimation filter. In the case of constant, simultaneously and identically acting additive and multiplicative faults, it can be shown that the estimation error converges to zero with an exponential rate. The performance of the proposed estimation filter in the presence of incipient faults is validated through an application on the lateral safety systems of SAE level 4 automated vehicles. The numerical results show that the theoretical bounds of this study are indeed close to the actual estimation error.
