Magnetometry, electrical transport, and neutron scattering measurements were performed on single crystals of the Fe^{4+}-containing perovskite-related phase Sr_3Fe_2O_7-x as a function of oxygen content. Although both the crystal structure and electron configuration of this compound are closely similar to those of well-studied ruthenates and manganates, it exhibits very different physical properties. The fully-oxygenated compound (x=0) exhibits a charge-disproportionation transition at T_D = 340 K, and an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 115 K. For temperatures T \leq T_D, the material is a small-gap insulator; the antiferromagnetic order is incommensurate, which implies competing exchange interactions between the Fe^{4+} moments. The fully-deoxygenated compound (x=1) is highly insulating, and its Fe^{3+} moments exhibit commensurate antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 600 K. Compounds with intermediate x exhibit different order with lower T_N, likely as a consequence of frustrated exchange interactions between Fe^{3+} and Fe^{4+} sublattices. A previous proposal that the magnetic transition temperature reaches zero is not supported.

This paper presents results of a recent study of multiferroic \CCO\ by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. This system has two close magnetic phase transitions at $T\nsub{N1}=24.2$ K and $T\nsub{N2}=23.6$ K. The low temperature magnetic structure below $T\nsub{N2}$ is unambiguously determined to be a fully 3-dimensional proper screw. Between $T\nsub{N1}$ and $T\nsub{N2}$ antiferromagnetic order is found that is essentially 2-dimensional. In this narrow temperature range, magnetic near neighbor correlations are still long range in the ($H,K$) plane, whereas nearest neighbors along the $L$-direction are uncorrelated. Thus, the multiferroic state is realized only in the low-temperature 3-dimensional state and not in the 2-dimensional state.

Neutron diffraction study shows that the shift of the Neel temperature of these materials from 150 (x = 0) to 200 K (x = 0.29) under the action of chemical pressure (x) is accompanied by a decrease in the cubic NaCl lattice parameters. The structural transition with a change in crystal symmetry and a decrease in resistance before the magnetic transition at x = 0.25 is found. Therefore, FeXMn1-XS are interesting materials for both fundamental study of the interrelation between the magnetic, electrical, and structural properties in systems with the strong electron correlations of a MnO-type and application.

Charge carriers in low-doped semiconductors may distort the atomic lattice and trap themselves forming so-called small polarons. High carrier concentrations can lead to short range ordered polarons (large polarons) and even to long range charge and orbital order. Both systems should be insulating with a large electrical resistivity, which decreases with increasing temperature. However, photoemission measurements recently found a polaronic pseudogap, in a metallic phase of La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7. This layered manganite is famous for colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) associated with a phase transition from this low-temperature metallic phase to a high temperature insulating phase. Broad charge order peaks due to large polarons observed by neutron and x-ray scattering in the insulating phase disappear when La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 becomes metallic. We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements showing that polarons remain inside the metallic phase as fluctuations that strongly broaden and soften certain phonons near the wave vectors where the charge order peaks appeared in the insulating phase. Our findings imply that polaronic signatures in metals may generally come from a competing insulating charge-ordered phase. It is highly relevant to cuprate superconductors with both a pseudogap, and a similar phonon effect associated with a competing stripe order.

We found that kee** the same crystal structure for all compositions, Ga for Mn substitution leads to the linear decrease of $T_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn}$ and $τ^{\rm Mn}$, reflecting the reduction of the exchange interactions strength $J_{\rm Mn-Mn}$ and the change of the Mn-O-Mn bond angles. At the same time, a strong suppression of both the induced and the separate Tb-magnetic ordering has been observed. This behavior unambiguously prove that the exchange fields $J_{\rm Mn-Tb}$ have a strong influence on the Tb-magnetic ordering in the full temperature range below $T_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn}$ and actually stabilize the Tb-magnetic ground state.

X-ray resonant magnetic scattering studies of rare earth magnetic ordering were performed on perovskite manganites RMnO3 (R = Dy, Gd) in an applied magnetic field. The data reveal that the field-induced three-fold polarization enhancement for H || a (H approx. 20 kOe) observed in DyMnO3 below 6.5 K is due to a re-emergence of the Mn-induced Dy spin order with propagation vector k(Dy) = k(Mn) = 0.385 b*, which accompanies the suppression of the independent Dy magnetic ordering, k(Dy) = 1/2 b*. For GdMnO3, the Mn-induced ordering of Gd spins is used to track the Mn-ordering propagation vector. The data confirm the incommensurate ordering reported previously, with k(Mn) varying from 0.245 to 0.16 b* on cooling from T_N(Mn) down to a transition temperature T'. New superstructure reflections which appear below T' suggest a propagation vector k(Mn) = 1/4 b* in zero magnetic field, which may coexist with the previously reported A-type ordering of Mn. The Gd spins order with the same propagation vector below 7 K. Within the ordered state of Gd at T = 1.8 K we find a phase boundary for an applied magnetic field H || b, H = 10 kOe, which coincides with the previously reported transition between the ground state paraelectric and the ferroelectric phase of GdMnO3. Our results suggest that the magnetic ordering of Gd in magnetic field may stabilize a cycloidal ordering of Mn that, in turn, produces ferroelectricity.

Multiferroic TbMnO3 is investigated using x-ray diffraction in high magnetic fields. Measurements on first and second harmonic structural reflections due to modulations induced by the Mn and Tb magnetic order are presented as function of temperature and field oriented along the a and b-directions of the crystal. The relation to changes in ordering of the rare earth moments in applied field is discussed. Observations below T_N(Tb) without and with applied magnetic field point to a strong interaction of the rare earth order, the Mn moments and the lattice. Also, the incommensurate to commensurate transition of the wave vector at the critical fields is discussed with respect to the Tb and Mn magnetic order and a phase diagram on basis of these observations for magnetic fields H||a and H||b is presented. The observations point to a complicated and delicate magneto-elastic interaction as function of temperature and field.

The field-induced multiferroic transition in TbMnO3 has been studied by neutron scattering. Apart strong hysteresis, the magnetic transition associated with the flop of electronic polarization exhibits a memory effect: after a field sweep, TbMnO3 does not exhibit the same phase as that obtained by zero-field cooling. The strong changes in the magnetic excitations across the transition perfectly agree with a rotation of the cycloidal spiral plane indicating that the inverse Dzyaloshinski-Moriya coupling causes the giant magnetoelectric effect at the field-induced transition. The analysis of the zone-center magnetic excitations identifies the electromagnon of the multiferroic high-field phase.

We explain this novel matching of wave vectors within the frustrated ANNNI model coupled to a periodic external field produced by the Mn-spin order. The tauTb = tauMn behavior is recovered when Tb magnetization is small, while the tauTb = 3/7 regime is stabilized at low temperatures by a peculiar arrangement of domain walls in the ordered state of Ising-like Tb spins.

In TbMnO$_3$ this contribution arises from a crystal-field splitting, while in NdMnO$_3$ it is due to the Nd-Mn exchange coupling. Another consequence of this coupling is a strongly enhanced canting of the Mn moments. The thermal conductivity is greatly suppressed in both compounds. The main scattering process at low temperatures is resonant scattering of phonons between different energy levels of the $4f$ multiplets, whereas the complex 3d magnetism of the Mn ions is of minor importance.

The (H,T)-phase diagram of the multiferroic perovskite TbMnO$_3$ was studied by high-resolution thermal expansion $α(T)$ and magnetostriction $ΔL(H)/L$ measurements. Below $T_{N}\simeq 42$ K, TbMnO$_3$ shows antiferromagnetic order, which changes at $T_{FE}\simeq 28$ K where simultaneously a spontaneous polarization $P||c$ develops. Sufficiently high magnetic fields applied along $a$ or $b$ induce a polarization flop to $P||a$. We find that all of these transitions are strongly coupled to the lattice parameters. Thus, our data allow for a precise determination of the phase boundaries and also yield information about their uniaxial pressure dependencies. The strongly hysteretic phase boundary to the ferroelectric phase with $P||a$ is derived in detail. Contrary to previous reports, we find that even in high magnetic fields there are no direct transitions from this phase to the paraelectric phase. We also determine the various phase boundaries in the low-temperature region related to complex reordering transitions of the Tb moments.

At the incommensurate magnetic zone center of the spiral phase, we find three low-lying magnons whose character has been fully determined using neutron-polarization analysis. The excitation at the lowest energy is the sliding mode of the spiral, and two modes at 1.1 and 2.5meV correspond to rotations of the spiral rotation plane. These latter modes are expected to couple to the electric polarization. The 2.5meV-mode is in perfect agreement with recent infra-red-spectroscopy data giving strong support to its interpretation as an hybridized phonon-magnon excitation.

It closely tracks the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization which reaches a maximum value of 0.2 muC/m^2. In-field X-ray diffraction measurements show that the quadratic magneto-elastic coupling breaks down with applied field as shown by the observation of the 1st harmonic lattice reflections above and below HC . This indicates that magnetic field induces a linear magneto-elastic coupling. We argue that the commensurate phase can be described by an ordering of Mn-O-Mn bond angles.

We have used electron and neutron powder diffraction to elucidate the structural properties of superconducting \NaD. Our measurements show that our superconducting sample exhbits a number of supercells ranging from ${1/3}a^{*}$ to ${1/15}a^{*}$, but the most predominant one, observed also in the neutron data, is a double hexagonal cell with dimensions \dhx. Rietveld analysis reveals that \deut\space is inserted between CoO$_{2}$ sheets as to form a layered network of NaO$_{6}$ triangular prisms. Our model removes the need to invoke a 5K superconducting point compound and suggests that a solid solution of Na is possible within a constant amount of water $y$.

We have studied the superconducting phase diagram of \NaH\space as a function of electronic do**, characterizing our samples both in terms of Na content $x$ and the Co valence state. Our findings are consistent with a recent report that intercalation of \oxp\space ions into Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, together with water, act as an additional dopant indicating that Na sub-stochiometry alone does not control the electronic do** of these materials. We find a superconducting phase diagram where optimal \Tc\space is achieved through a Co valence range of 3.24 - 3.35, while \Tc\space decreases for materials with a higher Co valence. The critical role of dimensionality in achieving superconductivity is highlighted by similarly doped non-superconducting anhydrous samples, differing from the superconducting hydrate only in inter-layer spacing. The increase of the interlayer separation between CoO$_{2}$ sheets as Co valence is varied into the optimal \Tc\space region is further evidence for this criticality.
