A recent study by Hon et al. reported that a close-in planet around the red clump star, 8 UMi, should have been engulfed during the expansion phase of its parent star's evolution. They explained the survival of this exoplanet through a binary-merger channel for 8 UMi. The key to testing this formation scenario is to derive the true age of this star: is it an old "imposter" resulting from a binary merger, or a genuinely young red clump giant? To accomplish this, we derive kinematic and chemical properties for 8 UMi using astrometric data from {\it Gaia} DR3 and the element-abundance pattern measured from a high-resolution ($R \sim 75,000$) spectrum taken by SOPHIE. Our analysis shows that 8 UMi is a normal thin-disk star with orbital rotation speed of $\it{V}_\mathrmφ=\mathrm{244.96 km s^{-1}}$, and possesses a Solar metallicity ([Fe/H] $= -0.05 \pm 0.07$) and $α$-element abundance ratio ([$α$/Fe] $= +0.01 \pm 0.03$). By adopting well-established relationships between age and space velocities/elemental abundances, we estimate a kinematic age of $3.50^{+3.00}_{-2.00}$ Gyr, and a chemical age of $3.25^{+2.50}_{-1.50}$ Gyr from [C/N] and $3.47 \pm 1.96$ Gyr from [Y/Mg] for 8 UMi, respectively. These estimates are consistent with the isochrone-fitting age ($1.90^{+1.15}_{-0.30}$ Gyr) of 8 UMi, but are all much younger than the timescale required in a binary-merger scenario. This result challenges the binary-merger model; the existence of such a closely orbiting exoplanet around a giant star remains a mystery yet to be resolved.

We developed a multi-region radiation model for the evolution of flux and spectral index with time. In this model, each perturbation component in the jet produces an independent flare. The model can be used to study the decomposition of microvariability, the structural scale of the perturbed components, and the physical parameters of the acceleration processes. Based on the shock acceleration model in relativistic jet, the influence of acceleration parameters on multiband flare parameters is calculated. We present the results of multiband optical microvariability of the blazar BL Lacertae observed performed during 89 nights in the period from 2009 to 2021, and use them as a sample for model fitting. The results show that both the amplitude and duration of flares decomposed from the microvariability light curves confirm a lognormal distribution. The time delays between the optical bands follow the normal distribution and amount to several minutes, that corroborates with both predictions from the theoretical model and the calculation of the discrete correlation function (DCF). Using the spectral index evolution and the simultaneous fitting of the multiband variability curves, we obtain the acceleration and radiation parameters to constrain and distinguish the origins of different flares. Based on the flare decomposition, we can well reproduce the time-domain evolution trends of the optical variation and energy spectrum, and explain the various redder-when-brighter (RWB) and/or bluer-when-brighter (BWB) behavior.

The non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation of Y I and Y II is considered in 1D LTE model atmospheres of F-G-K-type stars. The model atom was constructed with the most up-to-date atomic data, including quantum cross sections and rate coefficients for transitions in inelastic collisions of Y I and Y II with hydrogen atoms. For seven reference stars, we obtained an agreement between NLTE abundances inferred from the two ionization stages, while the difference in LTE abundance (Y I - Y II) can reach up to -0.31 dex. In the atmospheres of F-G-K-type stars, for both Y I and Y II lines, the NLTE abundance corrections are positive. In solar metallicity stars, the NLTE abundance corrections for Y II lines do not exceed 0.12 dex, while in atmospheres of metal-poor stars they do not exceed 0.21 dex. For Y I lines, the NLTE abundance corrections can reach up to 0.5 dex. We determined the yttrium NLTE abundances for a sample of 65 F and G dwarfs and subgiants in the -2.62~$\leq$~[Fe/H]~$\leq$~+0.24 metallicity range, using high-resolution spectra. For stars with [Fe/H]~$\leq$~-1.5, [Y/Fe] versus [Fe/H] diagram reveals positive trend with an average value of [Y/Fe]~$\simeq$~0. For metal-poor stars, among Sr, Y, and Zr, the arrangement [Sr/Fe] < [Y/Fe] < [Zr/Fe] remains consistent. The current study is useful for the Galactic chemical evolution research. The model atom will be applied for NLTE yttrium abundance determination in very metal-poor stars studied with LAMOST and Subaru.

Utilizing a simplified quantum model approach, the low-energy inelastic collision processes between yttrium atoms (ions) and hydrogen atoms have been studied. Rate coefficients corresponding to the mutual neutralization, ion-pair formation, excitation, and de-excitation processes for the above collision systems have been provided in the temperature range of 1000-10000K. 3 ionic states and 73 covalent states are considered in calculations for the collisions of yttrium atoms with hydrogen atoms, which include 6 molecular symmetries and 4074 partial inelastic reaction processes. For the collisions of yttrium ions with hydrogen atoms, 1 ionic state and 116 covalent states are included, which related to 3 molecular symmetries and 13572 partial inelastic collision processes. It is found that the rate coefficients for the mutual neutralization process have a maximum at T = 6000K, which is an order of magnitude higher than those of other processes. Notably, the positions of optimal windows for the collisions of yttrium atoms and ions with hydrogen atoms are found near electronic binding energy -2eV (Y) and -4.4eV (Y$^+$), respectively. The scattering channels located in or near these optimal windows have intermediate-to-large rate coefficients (greater than $10^{-12}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$). The reported data should be useful in the study of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium modeling.

Research into OJ 287 has been ongoing for many years. In 2020 April-June, this source underwent the second highest X-ray outburst (second only to the 2016-2017 outburst) and the mechanism of this outburst is still under debate. In this paper, we discuss two scenarios to explore the origin of the outburst: an after-effect of a black hole-disc impact and a tidal disruption event (TDE). We present the weak correlations of the spectral index versus X-ray flux and the hardness ratio (HR) versus the soft X-ray flux during the outburst, and these features are different from the case in the quiescent state. The correlations are compared with those of the 2016-2017 outburst with the highest X-ray flux in monitoring history. Analysis of the outbursts in 2016-2017 and 2020 shows that the expected time of the X-ray outburst, based on the theory of the after-effect of the black hole-disc impact and the estimation of available data, is inconsistent with historical observations. The soft X-ray spectra, the barely temporal evolution of colour, and the evolution of the HR mean that the 2020 outburst shares similar features with the 2016-2017 outburst, which was considered as a possible candidate for a TDE. Additionally, we find that the predictions of full TDEs ($t^{-5/3}$) and partial TDEs ($t^{-9/4}$) for the soft X-ray decay light curve are well fitted. Our analysis suggests that the 2020 outburst in OJ 287 is probably related to the TDE candidate.

The He, N, Ne, S, and Ar gradients resulted in slopes of $-$0.179$_{-0.146}^{+0.145}$, $-$0.431$_{-0.281}^{+0.282}$, $-$0.171$_{-0.239}^{+0.234}$, $-$0.417$_{-0.182}^{+0.174}$, $-$0.340$_{-0.157}^{+0.156}$, respectively, utilizing abundances from the $T_{\rm e}$-sensitive method. Our results confirm the existence of negative axisymmetric global metallicity distribution that is assumed in the literature. We noticed one new WC star candidate and one transition WR WN/C candidate. The grand-design pattern of spiral structure of M33 is presented.

Motivated by the previous studies based on the $γ$-ray data, we analyzed the X-ray light curve and spectra observed during 2012--2020. The 2.2-year quasi-periodicity might be consistent with the main-flare recurrence in the X-ray light curve. When a weak rebrightening in the $γ$-ray was observed, a corresponding relatively strong brightening in the X-ray light curve can be identified. The "harder-when-brighter" tendency in both X-ray main and weak flares was shown, as well as a weak "softer-when-brighter" behavior for the quiescent state. We explore the possibility that the variability in the X-ray band can be interpreted with two-jet precession scenario. Using the relation between jets and accretion discs, we derive the primary black hole mass $\simeq 3.47\times 10^8M_{\odot}$ and mass of the secondary one $\simeq 1.40\times 10^8M_{\odot}$, and their mass ratio $\sim 0.41$.

It became fainter by more than one magnitude and this is the most significant dimming observed in the recent decades. While the reason for the dimming is debated, pre-phase of supernova explosion, obscuring dust, or changes in the photosphere of the star were suggested scenarios. Here, we present spectroscopic studies of Betelgeuse using high-resolution and high signal-to- noise ratio near-infrared spectra obtained at Weihai Observatory on four epochs in 2020 covering the phases of during and after dimming. We show that the dimming episode is caused by the drop** of its effective temperature by at least 170 K on 2020 January 31, that can be attributed to the emergence of a large dark spot on the surface of the star.

The BL Lacertae OJ 287 is a supermassive black holes binary (SMBHB) system with complex physics of its irregular flares. During 2016 October -- 2017 April period, a surprising outburst in the X-ray, UV and optical bands was detected, while no variability was seen in the $γ$-ray light curve. During the outburst, the X-ray light curves were dominated by the soft X-rays, whose peak in the luminosity was $\sim$ $10^{46}\text{erg}~\text{s}^{-1}$ -- more than 10 times higher than the mean level before the outburst -- and a "softer-when-brighter" phenomenon was exhibited. These above phenomena have been reported by some previous works. The hardness ratio showed negligible evolution with flare time and soft X-ray luminosity. Critically, the luminosity of the soft X-rays decayed following a power law of $t^{-5/3}$ which occurs in most tidal disruption events (TDEs), and similar trend can be seen in UV and optical bands during the soft X-ray declining period. Helium and oxygen narrow emission lines are strengthened prominently in the optical spectra of postoutburst epochs, that could be attributed to the surrounding gas appeared due to TDE. We discuss three possible origins of the event, including the jet's precession, the aftereffect of the black hole-disk impaction and the TDE. Our results show that the TDE is the more likely scenario to explain the outburst.

We present accurate element abundance patterns based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE, NLTE) line formation for 14 chemical elements from He to Nd for a sample of nine A9 to B3 type stars with well determined atmospheric parameters and low rotational velocities. We constructed new model atom of Zr II-III and updated model atoms for Sr II and Ba II by implementing the photoionization cross sections from calculations with the Dirac B-spline R-matrix method. The NLTE abundances of He to Fe in the stars HD~17081, HD~32115, HD~160762, and HD~209459 are found to be consistent with the solar abundances, and HD~73666 being a Blue Struggler does not reveal deviations from chemical composition of the Praesepe cluster. Three of these stars with an effective temperature of lower than 10500~K have supersolar abundances of Sr, Zr, Ba, and Nd, and our results suggest the presence of a positive correlation between stellar effective temperature and abundance. For each star, enhancement of Ba is higher than that for any other heavy element. We propose that the solar Ba abundance is not representative of the galactic Ba abundance at modern epoch. The status of HD~145788 was not clarified: this star has solar abundances of C to Si and enhancements of Sr to Ba similar to that for superficially normal stars of similar temperature, while overabundant Ca, Ti, and Fe. The NLTE abundances of Vega support its status of a mild lambda~Bootis star.

We constructed a comprehensive model atom for NeI -- NeII using the most up-to-date atomic data available and evaluated the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for NeI and NeII in classical 1D models representing the atmospheres of B-type stars. We find that the large NLTE strengthening of the NeI lines corresponding to the 2p$^5$3p $-$ 2p$^5$3s transitions array occurs due to extremely small photoionization cross-sections of 2p$^5$3s levels that leads to strong overpopulation of these levels relative to their LTE populations. The deviations from LTE for the most NeII lines are small and do not exceed 0.11~dex in the absolute value. We analysed 20 lines of NeI and 13 lines of NeII for twenty-four B-type stars in the temperature range of 10\,400 $\le$ \Teff\ $\le$ 33\,400~K. For five stars, the NLTE leads to consistent abundances of NeI and NeII, while the difference in LTE abundance can reach up to 0.50~dex. The using of the experimental oscillator strengths recently measured by Piracha et al. (2015) leads to smaller line-by-line scatter for the most investigated stars. The averaged neon abundance in twenty-four B-type stars in solar neighborhood is 8.02$\pm$0.05. This value may provide indirect constraints on solar photospheric neon abundance.

Emission occurs in the lines of minority species, where the photoionization-recombination mechanism provides a depopulation of the lower levels to a greater extent than the upper levels. For C II 9903 and 18535~Å, the upper levels are mainly populated from C III reservoir through the Rydberg states. For C III 5695 and 6728--44~Å, the lower levels are depopulated due to photon losses in UV transitions at 885, 1308, and 1426--28~Å which become optically thin in the photosphere. We analysed the lines of C I, C II, C III, and C IV for twenty-two O-B-type stars with temperature range between 15\,800 $\leq$~\Teff~$\leq$ 38\,000~K. Abundances from emission lines of C I, C II and C III are in agreement with those from absorption ones for most of the stars. The obtained carbon abundances in 15~Mon and HD~42088 from emission and absorption lines are 8.27$\pm$0.11 and 8.31$\pm$0.11, respectively.

The typical blazar S5 0716$+$714 is very interesting due to its rapid and large amplitude variability and high duty cycle of micro-variability in optical band. We analyze the observations in I, R and V bands obtained with the $1.0m$ telescope at Weihai observatory of Shandong University from 2011 to 2018. The model of synchrotron radiation from turbulent cells in a jet has been proposed as a mechanism for explaining micro-variability seen in blazar light curves. Parameters such as the sizes of turbulent cells, the enhanced particle densities, and the location of the turbulent cells in the jet can be studied using this model. The model predicts a time lag between variations as observed in different frequency bands. Automatic model fitting method for micro-variability is developed, and the fitting results of our multi-frequency micro-variability observations support the model. The results show that both the amplitude and duration of flares decomposed from the micro-variability light curves confirm to the log-normal distribution. The turbulent cell size is within the range of about 5 to 55 AU, and the time lags of the micro-variability flares between the I-R and R-V bands should be several minutes. The time lags obtained from the turbulence model are consistent with the fitting statistical results, and the time lags of flares are correlated with the time lags of the whole light curve.

We report on the discovery of five carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in the metallicity range of $-3.3<$ [Fe/H] $<-2.4$. These stars were selected from the LAMOST DR3 low-resolution (R$ \sim$ 2,000) spectroscopic database as metal-poor candidates and followed-up with high-resolution spectroscopy (R$ \sim$110,000) with the LICK/APF. Stellar parameters and individual abundances for 25 chemical elements (from Li to Eu) are presented for the first time. These stars exhibit chemical abundance patterns that are similar to those reported in other literature studies of very and extremely metal-poor stars. One of our targets, J2114$-$0616, shows high enhancement in carbon ([C/Fe]=1.37), nitrogen ([N/Fe]= 1.88), barium ([Ba/Fe]=1.00), and europium ([Eu/Fe]=0.84). Such chemical abundance pattern suggests that J2114$-$0616 can be classified as CEMP-r/s star. In addition, the star J1054+0528 can be classified as a CEMP-rI star, with [Eu/Fe]=0.44 and [Ba/Fe]=$-$0.52. The other stars in our sample show no enhancements in neutron-capture elements and can be classified as CEMP-no stars. We also performed a kinematic and dynamical analysis of the sample stars based on Gaia DR2 data. The kinematic parameters, orbits, and binding energy of these stars, show that J2114$-$0616 is member of the outer halo population, while the remaining stars belong to the inner halo population but with an accreted origin. Collectively, these results add important constraints on the origin and evolution of CEMP stars as well as on their possible formation scenarios.

Abstract:
Non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for Mg I and Mg II lines is considered in classical 1D-LTE model atmospheres of the Sun and 17 stars with reliable atmospheric parameters and in a broad range of spectral types: 3900 $\le$ \Teff\ $\le$ 17500~K, 1.1 $\le$ log$g$ $\le$ 4.7, and $-$2.6 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ +0.4.

We find that, for each star, NLTE leads to smaller line-to-line scatter. For 10 stars, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from Mg I and Mg II, while the difference in the LTE abundance varies between $-0.21$ and +0.23~dex. We obtain an abundance discrepancy betweeen Mg I and Mg II in the two very metal-poor stars, HD 140283 and HD 84937. An origin of these abundance differences remains unclear.
Our standard NLTE modelling predicts Mg I emission lines at 7.736, 11.789, 12.224, and 12.321 $μ$m in the atmospheres with \Teff\ $\le$ 7000 K. We reproduce well the Mg I 12.2 and 12.3 $μ$m emission lines in Procyon. However, for the Sun and 3 K-giants, the predicted Mg I emission lines are too weak compared with the observations.
For stars with 7000 K $\le$ \Teff\ $\leq$ 17500 K, we recommend the Mg II 3848, 3850, 4384, 4390, 4427, and 4433 Å lines for Mg abundance determinations even at the LTE assumption due to their small NLTE effects. The Mg I 4167, 4571, 4702, 5528, 5167, 5172, and 5183 Å lines can be safely used in the LTE analysis of stars with 7000 K $<$ \Teff\ $\leq$ 8000 K. For the hotter stars, with \Teff\ from 8000 to 9500 K, the NLTE effects are minor only for Mg\ione\ 4167, 4702, and 4528 Å.

The program package SME (Spectroscopy Made Easy), designed to perform an analysis of stellar spectra using spectral fitting techniques, was updated due to adding new functions (isotopic and hyperfine splittins) in VALD and including grids of NLTE calculations for energy levels of few chemical elements. SME allows to derive automatically stellar atmospheric parameters: effective temperature, surface gravity, chemical abundances, radial and rotational velocities, turbulent velocities, taking into account all the effects defining spectral line formation. SME package uses the best grids of stellar atmospheres that allows us to perform spectral analysis with the similar accuracy in wide range of stellar parameters and metallicities - from dwarfs to giants of BAFGK spectral classes.

We present accurate methods of abundance determination based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for carbon, oxygen, calcium, titanium, and iron in the atmospheres of BAF-type stars. For C I-II, O I, Ca I-II, and Ti I-II, their comprehensive model atoms were described in our previous papers. A fairly complete model atom of Fe I-II is first applied in this study. We determine the NLTE abundances of the nine BAF-type stars with well-determined atmospheric parameters, using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectral observations in the broad wavelength range, from the UV to the IR. For C, Ca, Ti, and Fe, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from the lines of the two ionisation stages. The C I, Ca II, and Fe II emission lines were detected in the near IR spectrum of the late B-type subgiant star HD 160762. They are well reproduced in the classical model atmosphere, when applying our NLTE methods.

For the first time, we present an extensive study of stars with individual non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances for 17 chemical elements from Li to Eu in a sample of stars uniformly distributed over the $-2.62 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le +0.24$ metallicity range that is suitable for the Galactic chemical evolution research. The star sample has been kinematically selected to trace the Galactic thin and thick disks and halo. We find new and improve earlier results as follows. (i) The element-to-iron ratios for Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti form a MP plateau at a similar height of 0.3~dex, and the knee occurs at common [Fe/H] $\simeq -0.8$. The knee at the same metallicity is observed for [O/Fe], and the MP plateau is formed at [O/Fe] = 0.61. (ii) The upward trend of [C/O] with decreasing metallicity exists at [Fe/H] $< -1.2$, supporting the earlier finding of Akerman et al. (iii) An underabundance of Na relative to Mg in the [Fe/H] $< -1$ stars is nearly constant, with the mean [Na/Mg] $\simeq -0.5$. (iv) The K/Sc, Ca/Sc, and Ti/Sc ratios form well-defined trends, suggesting a common site of the K-Ti production. (v) Sr follows the Fe abundance down to [Fe/H] $\simeq -2.5$, while Zr is enhanced in MP stars. (vi) The comparisons of our results with some widely used Galactic evolution models are given. The use of the NLTE element abundances raises credit to the interpretation of the data in the context of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy.

Our NLTE calculations predict the emission that appears at effective temperature of 9250 to 10\,500~K depending on log~$g$ in the C\ione\ 8335, 9405\,Å singlet lines and at \Teff~$>$~15\,000~K (log~$g$ = 4) in the C\ione\ 9061 -- 9111\,Å\,, 9603 -- 9658\,Å\, triplet lines. A prerequisite of the emission phenomenon is the overionization-recombination mechanism resulting in a depopulation of the lower levels of C\ione\ to a greater extent than the upper levels. Extra depopulation of the lower levels of the transitions corresponding to the near-infrared lines, is caused by photon loss in the UV lines C\ione\ 2479, 1930, and 1657\,Å. We analysed the lines of C\ione\ and C\ii\ in Vega, HD~73666, Sirius, 21~Peg, $π$~Cet, HD~22136, and $ι$ Her taking advantage of their observed high-resolution spectra. The C\ione\ emission lines were detected in the four hottest stars, and they were well reproduced in our NLTE calculations. For each star, the mean NLTE abundances from lines of the two ionization stages, C\ione\ and C\ii, including the C\ione\ emission lines, were found to be consistent. We show that the predicted C\ione\ emission phenomenon depends strongly on whether accurate or approximate electron-impact excitation rates are applied.

We performed extensive tests of the accuracy of atmospheric parameter determination for FGK stars based on the spectrum fitting procedure Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME). Our stellar sample consists of 13 objects, including the Sun, in the temperature range 5000--6600~K and metallicity range -1.4 -- +0.4. The analysed stars have the advantage of having parameters derived by interferometry. For each star we use spectra obtained with different spectrographs and different signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). For the fitting we adopted three different sets of constraints and test how the derived parameters depend upon the spectral regions (masks) used in SME. We developed and implemented in SME a new method for estimating uncertainties in the resulting parameters based on fitting residuals, partial derivatives, and data uncertainties. For stars in the 5700--6600 K range the best agreement with the effective temperatures derived by interferometry is achieved when spectrum fitting includes the H$α$ and H$β$ lines, while for cooler stars the choice of the mask does not affect the results. The derived atmospheric parameters do not strongly depend on spectral resolution and S/N of the observations, while the uncertainties in temperature and surface gravity increase with increasing effective temperature, with minima at 50~K in Teff and 0.1~dex in log g, for spectra with S/N=150--200. A NLTE analysis of the TiI/TiII and FeI/FeII ionisation equilibria and abundances determined from the atomic CI (NLTE) and molecular CH species supports the parameters we derived with SME by fitting the observed spectra including the hydrogen lines.

A comprehensive model atom was constructed for C I using the most up-to-date atomic data. We evaluated non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for neutral carbon in classical 1D models representing atmospheres of late-type stars, where carbon abundance varies from solar value down to [C/H] = $-$3. NLTE leads to stronger C I lines compared with their LTE strength and negative NLTE abundance corrections, $Δ_{\rm NLTE}$. The deviations from LTE are large for the strong lines in the infrared (IR), with $Δ_{\rm NLTE}$ = $-$0.10 dex to $-$0.45 dex depending on stellar parameters, and they are minor for the weak lines in the visible spectral range, with |$Δ_{\rm NLTE}| \le$ 0.03 dex. The NLTE abundance corrections were found to be dependent of the carbon abundance in the model. As the first application of the treated model atom, carbon NLTE abundances were determined for the Sun and eight late-type stars with well-determined stellar parameters that cover the $-2.56 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le -1.02$ metallicity range. Consistent abundances from the visible and IR lines were found for the Sun and the most metal-rich star of our sample, when applying a scaling factor of S_H = 0.3 to the Drawinian rates of C+H collisions. Carbon abundances were also derived from the molecular CH lines and, for each star, they agree with that from the atomic C I lines. We present the NLTE abundance corrections for lines of C I in the grid of model atmospheres applicable to the carbon-enhanced (CEMP) stars.

The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of triggered star formation on the border of the HII region S233, which is formed by a B-star. Using high-resolution spectra we determine the spectral class of the ionizing star as B0.5 V and the radial velocity of the star to be -17.5(1.4) km/s. This value is consistent with the velocity of gas in a wide field across the S233 region, suggesting that the ionizing star was formed from a parent cloud belonging to the S233 region. By studying spatial-kinematic structure of the molecular cloud in the S233 region, we detected an isolated clump of gas producing CO emission red-shifted relative to the parent cloud. In the UKIDSS and WISE images, the clump of gas coincides with the infrared source containing a compact object and bright-rimmed structure. The bright-rimmed structure is perpendicular to the direction of the ionizing star. The compact source coincides in position with IRAS source 05351+3549. All these features indicate a possibility of triggering formation of a next-generation star in the S233 region. Within the framework of a theoretical one-dimensional model we conclude that the "collect-and-collapse" process is not likely to take place in the S233 region. The presence of the bright-rimmed structure and the compact infrared source suggest that the "collapse of the pre-existing clump" process is taking place.

We present atmospheric parameters for 51 nearby FG dwarfs uniformly distributed over the -2.60 < [Fe/H] < +0.20 metallicity range that is suitable for the Galactic chemical evolution research. Lines of iron, Fe I and Fe II, were used to derive a homogeneous set of effective temperatures, surface gravities, iron abundances, and microturbulence velocities. We used high-resolution (R>60000) Shane/Hamilton and CFHT/ESPaDOnS observed spectra and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for Fe I and Fe II in the classical 1D model atmospheres. The spectroscopic method was tested with the 20 benchmark stars, for which there are multiple measurements of the infrared flux method (IRFM) Teff and their Hipparcos parallax error is < 10%. We found NLTE abundances from lines of Fe I and Fe II to be consistent within 0.06 dex for every benchmark star, when applying a scaling factor of S_H = 0.5 to the Drawinian rates of inelastic Fe+H collisions. The obtained atmospheric parameters were checked for each program star by comparing its position in the log g-Teff plane with the theoretical evolutionary track in the Yi et al. (2004) grid. Our final effective temperatures lie in between the T_IRFM scales of Alonso et al. (1996) and Casagrande et al. (2011), with a mean difference of +46 K and -51 K, respectively. NLTE leads to higher surface gravity compared with that for LTE. The shift in log g is smaller than 0.1 dex for stars with either [Fe/H] > -0.75, or Teff < 5750 K, or log g > 4.20. NLTE analysis is crucial for the VMP turn-off and subgiant stars, for which the shift in log g between NLTE and LTE can be up to 0.5 dex. The obtained atmospheric parameters will be used in the forthcoming papers to determine NLTE abundances of important astrophysical elements from lithium to europium and to improve observational constraints on the chemo-dynamical models of the Galaxy evolution.

Context. Synthetic model atmosphere calculations are still the most commonly used tool when determining precise stellar parameters and stellar chemical compositions. Besides three-dimensional models that consistently solve for hydrodynamic processes, one-dimensional models that use an approximation for convective energy transport play the major role.
Aims. We use modern Balmer-line formation theory as well as spectral energy distribution (SED) measurements for the Sun and Procyon to calibrate the model parameter α that describes the efficiency of convection in our 1D models. Convection was calibrated over a significant range in parameter space, reaching from F-K along the main sequence and sampling the turnoff and giant branch over a wide range of metallicities. This calibration was compared to theoretical evaluations and allowed an accurate modeling of stellar atmospheres.
Methods. We used Balmer-line fitting and SED fits to determine the convective efficiency parameter α. Both methods are sensitive to the structure and temperature stratification of the deeper photosphere.
Results. While SED fits do not allow a precise determination of the convective parameter for the Sun and Procyon, they both favor values significantly higher than 1.0. Balmer-line fitting, which we find to be more sensitive, suggests that the convective efficiency parameter α is $\approx$ 2.0 for the main sequence and quickly decreases to $\approx$ 1.0 for evolved stars. These results are highly consistent with predictions from 3D models. While the values on the main sequence fit predictions very well, measurements suggest that the decrease of convective efficiency as stars evolve to the giant branch is more dramatic than predicted by models.

We evaluate non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for neutral sodium in model atmospheres of the 79 red giants using the model atom that incorporates the best available atomic data. The non-LTE abundances of Na were determined from Na I 6154, 6161 Å for the 38 stars of the thin disk (15 of them the BaII stars), 15 stars of the thick disk, 13 stars of Hercules stream and 13 transition stars which can be identified with neither thin disk nor thick disk. For Na I 6154, 6161 Å non-LTE abundance corrections amount to -0.06 to -0.24 dex depending on stellar parameters. We found no difference in [Na/Fe] abundance between the thick disk and thin disk and the obtained abundances are close to the solar one. We confirmed a weak excess of [Na/Fe] in BaII stars. Stars of the Hercules stream reveal [Na/Fe] abundances close to the solar one. The obtained results can be used to constrain the nucleosynthesis models for Na.
