Quantum supervised learning, utilizing variational circuits, stands out as a promising technology for NISQ devices due to its efficiency in hardware resource utilization during the creation of quantum feature maps and the implementation of hardware-efficient ansatz with trainable parameters. Despite these advantages, the training of quantum models encounters challenges, notably the barren plateau phenomenon, leading to stagnation in learning during optimization iterations. This study proposes an innovative approach: an evolutionary-enhanced ansatz-free supervised learning model. In contrast to parametrized circuits, our model employs circuits with variable topology that evolves through an elitist method, mitigating the barren plateau issue. Additionally, we introduce a novel concept, the superposition of multi-hot encodings, facilitating the treatment of multi-classification problems. Our framework successfully avoids barren plateaus, resulting in enhanced model accuracy. Comparative analysis with variational quantum classifiers from the technology's state-of-the-art reveal a substantial improvement in training efficiency and precision. Furthermore, we conduct tests on a challenging dataset class, traditionally problematic for conventional kernel machines, demonstrating a potential alternative path for achieving quantum advantage in supervised learning for NISQ era.

Effective feature selection is essential for enhancing the performance of artificial intelligence models. It involves identifying feature combinations that optimize a given metric, but this is a challenging task due to the problem's exponential time complexity. In this study, we present an innovative heuristic called Evolutionary Quantum Feature Selection (EQFS) that employs the Quantum Circuit Evolution (QCE) algorithm. Our approach harnesses the unique capabilities of QCE, which utilizes shallow depth circuits to generate sparse probability distributions. Our computational experiments demonstrate that EQFS can identify good feature combinations with quadratic scaling in the number of features. To evaluate EQFS's performance, we counted the number of times a given classical model assesses the cost function for a specific metric, as a function of the number of generations.

Finding the minimum value in an unordered database is a common and fundamental task in computer science. However, the optimal classical deterministic algorithm can find the minimum value with a time complexity that grows linearly with the number of elements in the database. In this paper, we present the proposal of a quantum algorithm for finding the minimum value of a database, which is quadratically faster than its best classical analogs. We assume a Quantum Random Access Memory (QRAM) that stores values from a database and perform an iterative search based on an oracle whose role is to limit the searched values by controlling the states of the most significant qubits. A complexity analysis was performed in order to demonstrate the advantage of this quantum algorithm over its classical counterparts. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the proposed algorithm would be used in an unsupervised machine learning task through a quantum version of the K-means algorithm.

In this work, we obtain the numerical temperature field to a thermally develo** fluid flow inside parallel plates problem with a quantum computing method. The physical problem deals with the heat transfer of a steady state, hydrodinamically developed and thermally develo** fluid flow inside two parallel plates channel subjected to a prescribed constant heat flux. Its solution is formulated numerically with Finite Differences method, where a sequence of linear systems must be solved in order to determine the complete temperature field. Such linear systems are written as discrete unconstrained optimization problems with floating points being approximated using binary variables and solved using near-term quantum heuristics. Due to the exponential cost of simulating quantum algorithms, a reduced number of qubits had to be used in the simulations, causing a loss of precision in the results. However, this work advances the state of the art of solutions of differential equations with noisy quantum devices and could be used for useful applications when quantum computers with thousands of qubits become available.

Quantum computing is in its early stage of implementation. Its capacity has been growing in the last years but its application in several fields of sciences is still restricted to oversimplified problems. In this stage, it is important to identify the situations where quantum computing presents the most promising results to be prepared when the technology is ready to be deployed. The geophysics field has several areas which are limited by the current computation capability, among them the so-called seismic inversion is one of the most important ones, which are strong candidates to benefit from quantum computing. In this work, we implement an approach for traveltime seismic inversion through a near-term quantum algorithm based on gradient-free quantum circuit learning. We demonstrate that a quantum computer with thousands of qubits, even if noisy, can solve geophysical problems. In addition, we compared the convergence of the method with the variational quantum algorithms.

The goal of this article is to introduce the fundamentals of quantum computing, focusing on a promising quantum algorithm and its application to a financial market problem. More specifically, we discuss the portfolio optimization problem using the \textit{Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm} (QAOA). We not only describe the main concepts involved but also consider simple practical examples, involving financial assets available on the Brazilian stock exchange, with codes, both classic and quantum, freely available as a Jupyter Notebook. We also analyze in details the quality of the combinatorial portfolio optimization solutions through QAOA using SENAI/CIMATEC's ATOS QLM quantum simulator.

We fix two of the degrees of freedom of this matrix from the analogous results in the massive-gluon regularization scheme by using the relation between that scheme and the MSbar scheme. We determine this scheme transformation from the double logarithmic contributions to the timelike splitting functions and the coefficient functions of inclusive particle production in e+ e- annihilation now available in both schemes. The remaining two degrees of freedom are fixed by reasonable physical assumptions. The results agree with the fixed-order results at next-to-next-to-leading order in the literature.

The non-singlets obtained in this way, would allow to test the commonly used assumptions in global fit analysis and to test universality. This method is applied to kaon production data in e+e-\to K+X,\,K=K^\pm, K^0_s and (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} is obtained without any assumptions. We compare the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of inclusive light-charged-particle production measured by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron with the theoretical prediction evaluated at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using fragmentation functions recently determined through a global data fit. While, in the lower p_T range, the data agree with the prediction within the theoretical error or slightly undershoot it, they significantly exceed it in the upper p_T range, by several orders of magnitude at the largest values of p_T, where perturbation theory should be most reliable. This disagreement is too large to be remedied by introducing additional produced particles into the calculation, and potentially challenges the validity of the factorization theorem on which the parton model of QCD relies. Clearly, a breakdown of the factorization theorem, being a fundamental property of QCD, would be extremely difficult to understand.

Only nuclear isospin invariance is assumed. Working with non-singlets allows us to include the data at very low momentum fractions, which have so far been excluded in global fits, and to perform a first NNLO fit to fragmentation functions. We find that the kaon non-singlet fragmentation function at large $z$ is larger than that obtained by the other collaborations from global fit analysis and differs significantly at low $z$.

The unified description of fragmentation function evolution from large to small x which was developed for the vacuum in previous publications is now generalized to the medium, and is studied for the case in which the complete contribution from the largest class of soft gluon logarithms, the double logarithms, are accounted for and with the fixed order part calculated to leading order. In this approach it proves possible to choose the remaining degrees of freedom related to the medium such that the distribution of produced hadrons is suppressed at large momenta while the production of soft radiation-induced charged hadrons at small momenta is enhanced, in agreement with experiment. Just as for the vacuum, our approach does not require further assumptions concerning fragmentation and is more complete than previous computations of evolution in the medium.

We review the description of inclusive single unpolarized light hadron production using fragmentation functions in the framework of the factorization theorem. We summarize the factorization of quantities into perturbatively calculable quantities and these universal fragmentation functions, and then discuss some improvements beyond the standard fixed order approach. We discuss the extraction of fragmentation functions for light charged and neutral hadrons using these theoretical tools through global fits to experimental data from reactions at various colliders, in particular from accurate e+e- reactions at LEP, and the subsequent successful predictions of other experimental data, such as data gathered at HERA, the Tevatron and RHIC from these fitted fragmentation functions as allowed by factorization universality. These global fits also impose competitive constraints on alpha_s(M_Z). Emphasis is placed on the need for accurate data from ep and pp(pbar) reactions in which the hadron species is identified in order to constrain the separate fragmentation functions of each quark flavour and hadron species.

We perform a number of improvements to the previous AKK extraction of fragmentation functions for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p/\bar{p}$, $K_S^0$ and $Λ/\barΛ$ particles at next-to-leading order. Inclusive hadron production measurements from $pp(\bar{p})$ reactions at BRAHMS, CDF, PHENIX and STAR are added to the data sample. We use the charge-sign asymmetry of the produced hadrons in $pp$ reactions to constrain the valence quark fragmentations. Data from $e^+ e^-$ reactions in regions of smaller $x$ and lower $\sqrt{s}$ are added. Hadron mass effects are treated for all observables and, for each particle, the hadron mass used for the description of the $e^+ e^-$ reaction is fitted. The baryons' fitted masses are found to be only around 1% above their true masses, while the values of the mesons' fitted masses have the correct order of magnitude. Large $x$ resummation is applied in the coefficient functions of the $e^+ e^-$ reactions, and also in the evolution of the fragmentation functions, which in most cases results in a significant reduction of the minimized $χ^2$. To further exploit the data, all published normalization errors are incorporated via a correlation matrix.

Predictions for light charged hadron production data in the current fragmentation region of deeply inelastic scattering from the H1 and ZEUS experiments are calculated using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, and using fragmentation functions obtained by fitting to similar data from $e^+ e^-$ reactions. General good agreement is found when the magnitude $Q^2$ of the hard photon's virtuality is sufficiently large. The discrepancy at low $Q$ and small scaled momentum $x_p$ is reduced by incorporating mass effects of the detected hadron. By performing quark tagging, the contributions to the overall fragmentation from the various quark flavours in the $ep$ reactions are studied and compared to the contributions in $e^+ e^-$ reactions. The yields of the various hadron species are also calculated.

We present an explicit example of our approach in which double logarithms are resummed using the Double Logarithmic Approximation. We show that this scheme reproduces the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation in certain limits, and find that after using it to fit quark and gluon fragmentation functions to experimental data,a good description of the data from the largest x values to the peak region in ln (1/x) is obtained. In addition, we develop a treatment of hadron mass effects which gives additional improvements at small x.

An approach which unifies the Double Logarithmic Approximation at small x and the leading order DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions at large x is presented. This approach reproduces exactly the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, but is more complete due to the degrees of freedom given to the quark sector and the inclusion of the fixed order terms. We define a general scheme for the evolution of fragmentation functions which resums both soft gluon logarithms and mass singularities in a consistent manner and to any order, and requires no additional theoretical assumptions. Using the Double Logarithmic Approximation and the known perturbative results for the splitting functions, we present our scheme with the complete contribution from the double logarithms, being the largest soft gluon logarithms. We show that the resulting approximation is more complete than the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation even with the fixed order contribution calculated to leading order only, and find, after using it to fit quark and gluon fragmentation functions to experimental data, that this approximation in our scheme gives a good description of the data from the largest x_p values to the peak region in xi=ln (1/x_p), in contrast to other approximations. In addition, we develop a treatment of hadron mass effects which gives additional improvements at large xi.

We perform fits of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ and the gluon fragmentation function $D(x,Q)$ at initial scale $Q_0 \ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$ to charged light hadron momentum spectra data by evolving in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation. Without additional assumptions, we achieve a good description of the available data for $ξ=\ln(1/x)$ up to and around the Gaussian peak, and values of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ acceptably close to those in the literature. In particular, we find that this procedure describes the position of the peak, and, in contrast to the Limiting Spectrum, also the normalization.

In next-to-leading order and the MSbar renormalization and factorization schemes, we obtain alpha_s(m_Z)=0.1183 +/- 0.0050(exp.)^+0.0029_-0.0028(theor.) [pointlike] and alpha_s(m_Z)=0.1198 +/- 0.0028(exp.)^+0.0034_-0.0046(theor.) [pointlike and hadronic]. We demonstrate that the data taken at LEP have reduced the experimental error by about a factor of two, so that a competitive determination of alpha_s from F_2^gamma is now possible.
