Data compression and decompression have become vital components of big-data applications to manage the exponential growth in the amount of data collected and stored. Furthermore, big-data applications have increasingly adopted GPUs due to their high compute throughput and memory bandwidth. Prior works presume that decompression is memory-bound and have dedicated most of the GPU's threads to data movement and adopted complex software techniques to hide memory latency for reading compressed data and writing uncompressed data. This paper shows that these techniques lead to poor GPU resource utilization as most threads end up waiting for the few decoding threads, exposing compute and synchronization latencies.
Based on this observation, we propose CODAG, a novel and simple kernel architecture for high throughput decompression on GPUs. CODAG eliminates the use of specialized groups of threads, frees up compute resources to increase the number of parallel decompression streams, and leverages the ample compute activities and the GPU's hardware scheduler to tolerate synchronization, compute, and memory latencies. Furthermore, CODAG provides a framework for users to easily incorporate new decompression algorithms without being burdened with implementing complex optimizations to hide memory latency. We validate our proposed architecture with three different encoding techniques, RLE v1, RLE v2, and Deflate, and a wide range of large datasets from different domains. We show that CODAG provides 13.46x, 5.69x, and 1.18x speed up for RLE v1, RLE v2, and Deflate, respectively, when compared to the state-of-the-art decompressors from NVIDIA RAPIDS.

The multiple-valued quantum logic is formulated systematically such that the truth values are represented naturally as unique roots of unity placed on the unit circle. Consequently, multi-valued quantum neuron (MVQN) is based on the principles of multiple-valued threshold logic over the field of complex numbers. The training of MVQN is reduced to the movement along the unit circle. A quantum neural network (QNN) based on multi-valued quantum neurons can be constructed with complex weights, inputs, and outputs encoded by roots of unity and an activation function that maps the complex plane into the unit circle. Such neural networks enjoy fast convergence and higher functionalities compared with quantum neural networks based on binary input with the same number of neurons and layers. Our construction can be used in analyzing the energy spectrum of quantum systems. Possible practical applications can be found using the quantum neural networks built from orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light or multi-level systems such as molecular spin qudits.

Prior works on parallelizing MCE on GPUs perform a breadth-first traversal of the tree, which has limited scalability because of the explosion in the number of tree nodes at deep levels. We propose to parallelize MCE on GPUs by performing depth-first traversal of independent subtrees in parallel. Since MCE suffers from high load imbalance and memory capacity requirements, we propose a worker list for dynamic load balancing, as well as partial induced subgraphs and a compact representation of excluded vertex sets to regulate memory consumption. Our evaluation shows that our GPU implementation on a single GPU outperforms the state-of-the-art parallel CPU implementation by a geometric mean of 4.9x (up to 16.7x), and scales efficiently to multiple GPUs. Our code has been open-sourced to enable further research on accelerating MCE.

The observation of magnetic diode behavior with ultra-low forward voltage of 5 mV renders new venue for energetically efficient spintronic device research in the unconventional system of two-dimensional permalloy honeycomb lattice. Detailed understanding of temperature and magnetic field tuning of diode behavior is imperative to any practical application. Here, we report a comprehensive study in this regard by performing electrical measurements on magnetic diode sample as functions of temperature and magnetic field. Magnetic diode is found to persist across the broad temperature range. Magnetic field application unveils a peculiar reentrant characteristic where diode behavior is suppressed in remnant field but reappears after warming to room temperature. Analysis of I-V data suggests a modest energy gap, 0.03-0.1 eV, which is comparable to magnetic Coulomb's interaction energy between emergent magnetic charges on honeycomb vertices in the reverse biased state. It affirms the role of magnetic charge correlation in unidirectional conduction in 2D honeycomb lattice. The experimental results are expected to pave way for the utilization of magnetic diode in next generation spintronic device applications.

First, we obtain a closed analytical formula for the exponential Fourier transform of a general $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian. Using the Segal-Bargmann transform, we investigate the effect of the Fourier transform on the eigenfunctions of the original Hamiltonian. As an immediate application, we comment on the holomorphic representation of non-Hermitian spin chains, in which the Hamiltonian operator is written in terms of analytical phase-space coordinates and their partial derivatives in the Bargmann space rather than matrices in the vector Hilbert space. Finally, we discuss the effect of integral transforms in the study of the Swanson Hamiltonian.

Spin diode is important prerequisite to practical manifestation of spin electronics. Yet, a functioning magnetic diode at room temperature is still illusive. Here, we reveal diode-type phenomena due to magnetic charge mediated conduction in artificial honeycomb geometry, made of concave shape single domain permalloy element. We find that honeycomb lattice defies symmetry by populating vertices with low and high multiplicity magnetic charges, causing asymmetric magnetization, in applied current of opposite polarity. High multiplicity units create highly resistive network, thereby inhibiting magnetic charge dynamics propelled electrical conduction. However, practical realization of this effect requires modest demagnetization factor in constituting element. Concave structure fulfills the condition. Subsequently, magnetic diode behavior emerges across broad thermal range of $T$ = 40K - 300K. The finding is a departure from the prevailing notion of spin-charge interaction as the sole guiding principle behind spintronics. Consequently, a new vista, mediated by magnetic charge interaction, is envisaged for spintronic research

Counting k-cliques in a graph is an important problem in graph analysis with many applications such as community detection and graph partitioning. Counting k-cliques is typically done by traversing search trees starting at each vertex in the graph. Parallelizing k-clique counting has been well-studied on CPUs and many solutions exist. However, there are no performant solutions for k-clique counting on GPUs.
Parallelizing k-clique counting on GPUs comes with numerous challenges such as the need for extracting fine-grain multi-level parallelism, sensitivity to load imbalance, and constrained physical memory capacity. While there has been work on related problems such as finding maximal cliques and generalized sub-graph matching on GPUs, k-clique counting in particular has yet to be explored in depth. In this paper, we present the first parallel GPU solution specialized for the k-clique counting problem. Our solution supports both graph orientation and pivoting for eliminating redundant clique discovery. It incorporates both vertex-centric and edge-centric parallelization schemes for distributing work across thread blocks, and further partitions work within each thread block to extract fine-grain multi-level parallelism while tolerating load imbalance. It also includes optimizations such as binary encoding of induced sub-graphs and sub-warp partitioning to limit memory consumption and improve the utilization of execution resources.
Our evaluation shows that our best GPU implementation outperforms the best state-of-the-art parallel CPU implementation by a geometric mean of 12.39x, 6.21x, and 18.99x for k=4, 7, and 10, respectively. We also perform a detailed evaluation of the trade-offs involved in the choice of parallelization scheme, and the incremental speedup of each optimization to provide an in-depth understanding of the optimization space. ...

More precisely, we describe the missing anti-particles in our visible universe as being trapped in a spacetime patch with different metric such as the de-Sitter spacetime and negative energies. In order to stabilize these anti-states, time must go in the opposite direction to our visible universe, in agreement with the Feynman-Stückelberg interpretation of antiparticles. Since the energy scale of our observed universe is low, we do not need to worry about these highly energetic anti-particles except for compatibility issues regarding the restoration of classical energy conditions. However, at the quantum gravity scale, these anti-states play a crucial role in the cancellation of gravitational anomalies, along with other possible quantum anomalies that may emerge.

We find the relation between matrix elements of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H$ and its supersymmetric partner $H^{+}$ in a given basis. Moreover, the orthogonal polynomials in the eigenstate expansion problem attached to $H^{+}$ can be recovered from those polynomials arising from the same problem for $H$ with the help of kernel polynomials. Besides its generality, the developed formalism in this work is a natural home for using the numerically powerful Gauss quadrature techniques in probing the nature of some physical quantities such as the energy spectrum of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex potentials. In this paper, we develop a convolutional neural network model to predict the mechanical properties of a two-dimensional checkerboard composite quantitatively. The checkerboard composite possesses two phases, one phase is soft and ductile while the other is stiff and brittle. The ground-truth data used in the training process are obtained from finite element analyses under the assumption of plane stress. Monte Carlo simulations and central limit theorem are used to find the size of the dataset needed. Once the training process is completed, the developed model is validated using data unseen during training. The developed neural network model captures the stiffness, strength, and toughness of checkerboard composites with high accuracy. Also, we integrate the developed model with a genetic algorithm (GA) optimizer to identify the optimal microstructural designs. The genetic algorithm optimizer adopted here has several operators, selection, crossover, mutation, and elitism. The optimizer converges to configurations with highly enhanced properties. For the case of the modulus and starting from randomly-initialized generation, the GA optimizer converges to the global maximum which involves no soft elements. Also, the GA optimizers, when used to maximize strength and toughness, tend towards having soft elements in the region next to the crack tip.

Maintaining the quality of service (QOS) and controlling the network congestion are quite complicated tasks. They cause degrading the performance of the network, and disturbing the continuous communication process. To overcome these issues, one step towards this dilemma has been taken in form of Pre-congestion notification (PCN) technique. PCN uses a packet marking technique within a PCN domain over IP networks. It is notified by egress node that works as guard at entry point of network. Egress node gives feedback to communicating servers whether rate on the link is exceeded than configured admissible threshold or within the limit. Based on this feedback, admission decisions are taken to determine whether to allow/block new coming flows or terminate already accepted. The actual question is about selection of right algorithm for PCN domain. In this paper, we investigate the analytical behavior of some known PCN algorithms. We make slide modifications in originality of PCN algorithms without disquieting working process in order to employ those within similar types of scenarios. Our goal is to simulate them either in highly congested or less congested realistic scenarios. On the basis of simulation done in ns2, we are able to recommend each PCN algorithm for specific conditions. Finally, we develop a benchmark that helps researchers and scientific communities to pick the right algorithm. Furthermore, the benchmark is designed to achieve specific objectives according to the users' requirements without congesting the network.
