Model uncertainties, arising due to suppression of target excitations in the description of deuteron scattering and resulting in a modification of the two-body interactions in a three-body system, are investigated for several $(d,p)$ reactions serving as indirect tools for studying the astrophysical $(p,γ)$ reactions relevant to $rp$-process. The three-body nature of deuteron-target potential is treated within adiabatic distorted wave approximation (ADWA) which relies on dominant contribution from the components of the three-body deuteron-target wave function with small $n$-$p$ separations. This results in a simple prescription for treating the explicit energy-dependence of two-body optical potentials in a three-body system requiring nucleon optical potentials to be evaluated at a shifted energy with respect to the standard value of half the deuteron incident energy. In addition, the ADWA allows for leading-order multiple scattering effects to be estimated, which leads to a simple renormalization of the adiabatic potential's imaginary part by the factor of two. These effects are assessed using both nonlocal and local optical potential systematics for $^{26}$Al, $^{30}$P, $^{34}$Cl and $^{56}$Ni targets at deuteron incident energy of 12 MeV typical for experiments with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics. The model uncertainties induced by the three-body nature of deuteron-target scattering are found to be within 40$\%$ both in the main peak of angular distributions and in total $(d,p)$ cross sections. At higher deuteron energies, around 60 MeV, model uncertainties can reach 100\% in the total cross sections. A few examples of application to astrophysically interesting proton resonances in $^{27}$Si and $^{57}$Cu obtained using $(d,p)$ reactions and mirror symmetry are given.

The contribution of a three-nucleon (3N) force, acting between the neutron and proton in the incoming deuteron with a target nucleon, to the deuteron-target potential in the entrance channel of the $A(d,p)B$ reaction has been calculated within the adiabatic distorted wave approximation (ADWA). Four different 3N interaction sets from local chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) at next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO) were used. Strong sensitivity of the adiabatic deuteron-target potential to the choice of the 3N force format has been found, which originates from the enhanced sensitivity to the short-range physics of nucleon-nucleon (NN) and 3N interactions in the ADWA. Such a sensitivity is reduced when a Watanabe folding model is used to generate $d$-$A$ potential instead of ADWA. The impact of the 3N force contribution on $(d,p)$ cross sections depends on assumptions made about the $p$-$A$ and $n$-$A$ optical potentials used to calculate the distorted $d$-$A$ potential in the entrance channel. It is different for local and nonlocal optical potentials and depends on whether the induced three-body force arising due to neglect of target excitations is included or not.

A widely accepted practice for treating deuteron breakup in $A(d,p)B$ reactions relies on solving a three-body $A+n+p$ Schrödinger equation with pairwise $A$-$n$, $A$-$p$ and $n$-$p$ interactions. However, it was shown in [Phys. Rev. Rev. C \textbf{89}, 024605 (2014)] that projection of the many-body $A+2$ wave function into the three-body $A+n+p$ channel results in a complicated three-body operator that cannot be reduced to a sum of pairwise potentials. It contains explicit contributions from terms that include interactions between the neutron and proton via excitation of the target $A$. Such terms are normally neglected. We estimate the first order contribution of these induced three-body terms and show that applying the adiabatic approximation to solving the $A+n+p$ model results in a simple modification of the two-body nucleon optical potentials. We illustrate the role of these terms for the case of $^{40}$Ca($d,p$)$^{41}$Ca transfer reactions at incident deuteron energies of 11.8, 20 and 56 MeV, using several parameterisations of nonlocal optical potentials.

Despite compelling evidence to the contrary in recent years, the view still persists that quantum effects cannot survive very long within a warm, noisy and complex environment that washes out quantum effects at timescales far too short for any chemically or biochemically interesting processes. It is also assumed that as the temperature of the surrounding environment increases, so the efficiency of processes such as quantum tunnelling drops. One way of viewing this has been to invoke the quantum Zeno effect: that the watched pot never boils. In this work we show that the opposite is true. For a quite general open quantum system, a proton in an asymmetric double-well potential, the action of the environment is to enhance the tunnelling rate (an anti-Zeno effect). We compare two simple mathematical models to show that, over a specific temperature range, thermally enhanced quantum tunnelling is equivalent to increasing the frequency of a von Neumann-type measurement by the environment on the system.

We provide an analysis of vector meson photoproduction in the channel of the vector meson decaying into a pseudoscalar meson plus a photon, i.e. $V\to Pγ$. It is shown that non-trivial kinematic correlations arise from the measurement of the $Pγ$ angular distributions in the overall c.m. system in comparison with those in the vector-meson-rest frame. In terms of the vector meson density matrix elements, the implication of such kinematic correlations in the measurement of polarization observables is discussed. For the $ω$ meson production, due to its relatively large branching ratios for $ω\toπ^0γ$, additional events from this channel may enrich the information about the reaction mechanism and improve the statistics of the recent measurement of polarized beam asymmetries by the GRAAL Collaboration. For $φ\to ηγ$, $ρ\to πγ$, and $K^*\to Kγ$, we expect that additional information about the spin structure of the vector meson production vertex can be derived.

A quark-model framework for studying nuclear medium effects on nucleon resonances is described and applied here to pion photoproduction on the deuteron, which is the simplest composite nucleon system and serves as a first test case. Pion photoproduction on nuclei is discussed within a chiral constituent quark model in which the quark degrees of freedom are explicitly introduced through an effective chiral Lagrangian for the quark-pseudoscalar-meson coupling. The advantage of this model is that a complete set of nucleon resonances can be systematically included with a limited number of parameters. Also, the systematic description of the nucleon and its resonances at quark level allows us to self-consistently relate the nuclear medium's influence on the baryon properties to the intrinsic dynamic aspects of the baryons. As the simplest composite nucleus, the deuteron represents the first application of this effective theory for meson photoproduction on light nuclei. The influence of the medium on the transition operators for a free nucleon is investigated in the Delta resonance region. No evidence is found for a change of the Delta properties in the pion photoproduction reaction on the deuteron since the nuclear medium here involves just one other nucleon and the low binding energy implies low nuclear density. However, we show that the reaction mechanism is in principle sensitive to changes of Delta properties that would be produced by the denser nuclear medium of heavier nuclei through the modification of the quark model parameters.

Abstract:
We present an analysis of the Beam-Target double polarization asymmetry for the photoproduction of $Θ^+$ in $γn\to Θ^+ K^-$. We show that this quantity can serve as a filter for the determination of the $Θ^+$'s spin-parity assignment near threshold. It is highly selective between $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$ configurations due to dynamical reasons.

We derive the formalism for the leading order corrections to the adiabatic approximation to the scattering of composite projectiles. Assuming a two-body projectile of core plus loosely-bound valence particle and a model (the core recoil model) in which the interaction of the valence particle and the target can be neglected, we derive the non-adiabatic correction terms both exactly, using a partial wave analysis, and using the eikonal approximation. Along with the expected energy dependence of the corrections, there is also a strong dependence on the valence-to-core mass ratio and on the strength of the imaginary potential for the core-target interaction, which relates to absorption of the core in its scattering by the target. The strength and diffuseness of the core-target potential also determine the size of the corrections. The first order non-adiabatic corrections were found to be smaller than qualitative estimates would expect. The large absorption associated with the core-target interaction in such halo nuclei as Be11 kills off most of the non-adiabatic corrections. We give an improved estimate for the range of validity of the adiabatic approximation when the valence-target interaction is neglected, which includes the effect of core absorption. Some consideration was given to the validity of the eikonal approximation in our calculations.

Within this effective Lagrangian approach, strongly constrainted by the quark model, we consider the issue of double-counting which may occur if additional {\it t}-channel contributions are included.

Abstract:
An improved version of a recently developed quark model approach to vector meson photoproduction is applied to the investigation of contributions of vector meson photoproduction to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. We find that the sum rule converges at a few GeV's. Contributions to the proton channel are found to be small while to the neutron are relatively large.

Careful consideration is given to the intrinsic few-body structure of these projectiles and the adiabatic nature of the projectile-target interaction. Using $^{11}$Li, $^{11}$Be and $^{8}$B as examples we show that data require significantly larger matter radii than previously reported. The revised value for $^{11}$Li of 3.55 fm is consistent with three-body models with significant $1s$-intruder state components, which reproduce experimental $^{9}$Li momentum distributions following $^{11}$Li breakup, but were hitherto thought to be at variance with cross section data.
