Search for Rare and Forbidden Charm Meson Decays D0--> V l+ l- and h h l l

Abstract: We report the results of a search for flavor-changing neutral current, lepton-flavor, and lepton-number violating decays of the 3 and 4-body decay modes of D0 (and its antiparticle) containing muons and electrons. Observation of color-transparency in diffractive dissociation of pions

Abstract: We have studied the diffractive dissociation into di-jets of 500 GeV/c pions scattering coherently from carbon and platinum targets. Extrapolating to asymptotically high energies (where t_{min} approaches 0) we find that when the per-nucleus cross-section for this process is parameterized as $σ= σ_0 A^α, α$ has values near 1.6, the exact result depending on jet transverse momentum. Direct measurement of the pion valence quark momentum distribution, the pion light-cone wave function squared

Abstract: We present the first direct measurements of the pion valence quark momentum distribution which is related to the square of the pion light-cone wave function. The measurements were carried out using data on diffractive dissociation of 500 GeV/c $π^-$ into di-jets from a platinum target at Fermilab experiment E791. Asymmetries in the production of lambda zero, cascade minus, and omega minus hyperons in 500 GeV/c pi minus-Nucleon Interactions

Abstract: Using data from Fermilab fixed-target experiment E791, we have measured particle-antiparticle production asymmetries for lambda zero, cascade minus, and omega minus hyperons in pi minus-nucleon interactions at 500 GeV/c. Observation of D-pi Production Correlations in 500 GeV pi- - N Interactions

Multidimensional Resonance Analysis of $Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+$

Abstract: We present the results of a five-dimensional resonant amplitude analysis of the $Λ_c^+{\to}pK^{-}π^{+}$ system based on $946\pm 38$ reconstructed decays. These data were produced in 500 GeV/$c$ $π^-$-N interactions by Fermilab experiment E791. We report measurements of the amplitudes for $Λ_c^+$ decay into nonresonant $pK^-π^+$ and to $p\bar{K}^{*0}(890)$, $Δ^{++}(1232)K^-$, and $Λ(1520)π^+$ and… ▽ More We present the results of a five-dimensional resonant amplitude analysis of the $Λ_c^+{\to}pK^{-}π^{+}$ system based on $946\pm 38$ reconstructed decays. We report measurements of the amplitudes for $Λ_c^+$ decay into nonresonant $pK^-π^+$ and to $p\bar{K}^{*0}(890)$, $Δ^{++}(1232)K^-$, and $Λ(1520)π^+$ and we comment on other possible resonant enhancements. This is the first complete amplitude analysis of the $Λ_c^{+}{\to}pK^{-}π^{+}$ system. We find that $(54.8\pm5.5\pm3.5)$% of the decays are nonresonant, $(19.5\pm2.6\pm1.8)$% of the decays are via the $\bar{K}^{*0}$ resonance, $(18.0\pm2.9\pm2.9)$% of the decays are via the $Δ^{++}$ resonance, and $(7.7\pm1.8\pm1.1)$% of the decays are via the $Λ(1520)$ resonance. We find evidence for an increasingly negative polarization of the $Λ_c^+$ baryons as a function of $p_T^2$, in agreement with a recent model\cite{dha} and with a related measurement\cite{jez}. △ Less

Total Forward and Differential Cross Sections of Neutral D Mesons Produced in 500 GeV/c $π^-$-Nucleon Interactions

Abstract: We measure the neutral D total forward cross section and the differential cross sections as function of Feynman-x ($x_F$) and transverse momentum squared for 500 GeV/c $π^-$-nucleon interactions. The results are obtained from 88990+-460 reconstructed neutral D mesons from Fermilab experiment E791 using the decay channels $D\to K^-π^+$ and $D\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ (and charge conjugates). We extract f… ▽ More We measure the neutral D total forward cross section and the differential cross sections as function of Feynman-x ($x_F$) and transverse momentum squared for 500 GeV/c $π^-$-nucleon interactions. The results are obtained from 88990+-460 reconstructed neutral D mesons from Fermilab experiment E791 using the decay channels $D\to K^-π^+$ and $D\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ (and charge conjugates). We extract fit parameters from the differential cross sections and provide the first direct measurement of the turnover point in the $x_F$ distribution, 0.0131+-0.0038. We measure an absolute $D^0 + \bar{D^0}$ ($x_F > 0$) cross section of 15.4+1.8-2.3 microbarns/nucleon (assuming a linear A dependence). The differential and total forward cross sections are compared to theoretical predictions and to results of previous experiments. △ Less

Measurement of the Ds Lifetime

Abstract: We report the results of a precise measurement of the Ds meson lifetime based on 1662 +/- 56 fully reconstructed Ds -> phi pi decays, from the charm hadroproduction experiment E791 at Fermilab. Using an unbinned maximum likelihood fit, we measure the Ds lifetime to be 0.518 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.007 ps. The ratio of the measured Ds lifetime to the world average D0 lifetime is 1.25 +/- 0.04. Correlations between D and $\bar{D}$ mesons produced in 500 GeV/c $π^-$-nucleon interactions

Abstract: We present a study of correlations between D and $\bar{D}$ mesons produced in 500 GeV/$c$ $π^-$-nucleon interactions, based on data from experiment E791 at Fermilab. We have fully reconstructed $791 \pm 44$ charm meson pairs to study correlations between the transverse and longitudinal momenta of the two D mesons and the relative production rates for different types of D meson pairs. We see slig… ▽ More We present a study of correlations between D and $\bar{D}$ mesons produced in 500 GeV/$c$ $π^-$-nucleon interactions, based on data from experiment E791 at Fermilab. We have fully reconstructed $791 \pm 44$ charm meson pairs to study correlations between the transverse and longitudinal momenta of the two D mesons and the relative production rates for different types of D meson pairs. We see slight correlations between the longitudinal momenta of the D and the $\bar D$, and significant correlations between the azimuthal angle of the D and the $\bar D$. The experimental distributions are compared to a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation and to predictions of the {\sc Pythia/Jetset} Monte Carlo event generator. We observe less correlation between transverse momenta and different correlations between longitudinal momenta than these models predict for the default values of the model parameters. Better agreement between data and theory might be achieved by tuning the model parameters or by adding higher order perturbative terms, thus contributing to a better understanding of charm production. The relative production rates for the four sets of charm pairs, $D^0\bar{D}^{0}$, $D^0D^-$, $D^+\bar{D}^{0}$, $D^+D^-$, as calculated in the {\sc Pythia/Jetset} event generator with the default parameters, agree with data as far as the relative ordering, but predict too many $D^+\bar{D}^{0}$ pairs and too few $D^+D^-$ pairs. △ Less

Mass Splitting and Production of $Σ_c^0$ and $Σ_c^{++}$ Measured in $500 {GeV}$ $π^- -$N Interactions
