We have recently reported the first direct calorimetric observation of a magnetic-field-induced first-order phase transition into a high-field FFLO superconducting state at the Clogston-Chandrasekar `Pauli' paramagnetic limit $H_p$ in a 2D superconductor $κ-{\textrm{(BEDT-TTF)}}_2{\textrm{Cu}}{\textrm{(NCS)}}_2$. The high-field state is both higher entropy and strongly paramagnetic, as thermodynamically required for the FFLO state. Here we compare our results with theoretical predictions for the field dependence of the high-field FFLO state in the 2D limit, revealing tentative evidence for transitions between FFLO states of differing order parameter. We also present calorimetric evidence for a 1st order phase transition into the FFLO state for a second 2D organic superconductor: $β^{\prime\prime}-{\textrm{(BEDT-TTF)}}_2{\textrm{SF}}_5{\textrm{(CH)}}_2{\textrm{(CF)}}_2{\textrm{(SO)}}_3$.

We report the first magneto-caloric and calorimetric observations of a magnetic-field-induced phase transition within a superconducting state to the long-sought exotic "FFLO" superconducting state first predicted over 50 years ago. Through the combination of bulk thermodynamic calorimetric and magnetocaloric measurements in the organic superconductor $κ$ - (BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$, as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength, and magnetic field orientation, we establish for the first time that this field-induced first-order phase transition at the paramagnetic limit $H_p$ for traditional superconductivity is to a higher entropy superconducting phase uniquely characteristic of the FFLO state. We also establish that this high-field superconducting state displays the bulk paramagnetic ordering of spin domains required of the FFLO state. These results rule out the alternate possibility of spin-density wave (SDW) ordering in the high field superconducting phase. The phase diagram determined from our measurements --- including the observation of a phase transition into the FFLO phase at $H_p$ --- is in good agreement with recent NMR results and our own earlier tunnel-diode magnetic penetration depth experiments, but is in disagreement with the only previous calorimetric report.

The 1964 reports of Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov (FFLO or LOFF) on paramagnetic enhancement of superconductivity suggested that superconductivity can persist at applied magnetic fields above both its orbital and paramagnetic limits. By forming spatially alternating superconducting and paramagnetic regions, the increase in local magnetic field in the paramagnetic region allows a reduction in field inside the superconductor. We present an FFLO phase diagram model for layered organic superconductors and confirm it with high magnetic field data from four materials. Our work suggests that paramagnetic and superconducting regions form as radially alternating rings about each vortex rather than plane waves, as FFLO is usually described.

We present upper critical field data for $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ with the magnetic field close to parallel and parallel to the conducting layers. We show that we can eliminate the effect of vortex dynamics in these layered materials if the layers are oriented within 0.3 degrees of parallel to the applied magnetic field. Eliminating vortex effects leaves one remaining feature in the data that corresponds to the Pauli paramagnetic limit ($H_p$). We propose a semi-empirical method to calculate the $H_p$ in quasi 2D superconductors. This method takes into account the energy gap of each of the quasi 2D superconductors, which is calculated from specific heat data, and the influence of many body effects. The calculated Pauli paramagnetic limits are then compared to critical field data for the title compound and other organic conductors. Many of the examined quasi 2D superconductors, including the above organic superconductors and CeCoIn$_5$, exhibit upper critical fields that exceed their calculated $H_p$ suggesting unconventional superconductivity. We show that the high field low temperature state in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ is consistent with the Fulde Ferrell Larkin Ovchinnikov state.

The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_{c2}$ for two-band $s^\pm$ pairing in the clean limit. We show that $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ is mostly limited by the orbital pairbreaking, whereas the shape of $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ indicates strong paramagnetic Pauli limiting and the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)state below $T_F \sim 5$ K.

We report the phase diagram of $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ from rf penetration depth measurements with a tunnel diode oscillator in a pulsed magnetic field. We examined four samples with 1100 field sweeps in a range of angles with the magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the conducting planes. In the parallel direction, $H_{c2}$ appears to include a tricritical point at 1.6 K and 10 T with a phase line that increases to 11 T as the temperature is decreased to} 500 mK. The second phase line forms a clearly defined high field low temperature region satisfying several of the conditions of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. We show remarkably good fits of $H_{c2}$ to WHH in the reentrant $α>1$, $λ_{so}=0$ regime. We also note a sharp angle dependence of the phase diagram about the field parallel orientation that characterizes Pauli paramagnetic limiting and further supports the possibility of FFLO behavior. Unrelated to the FFLO study, at fields and temperatures below $H_{c2}$ and $T_c$, we find rich structure in the penetration depth data that we attribute to impurities at the surface altering the superconducting properties while maintaining the same crystallographic axes as $H_{c2}$.

We specifically consider the TDO in pulsed high magnetic fields with fast digital acquisition. Since overdriven oscillators are necessary in pulsed fields to maintain oscillations, we examine the circuit using SPICE simulation during the design process and to gain insight into its behavior. We also discuss a numerical technique for demodulating the oscillations into frequency and amplitude.

For magnetic field applied parallel to the conducting planes the low temperature upper critical fields are found to exceed the Pauli limiting field calculated by using a semi-empirical method. Furthermore, we found a signature that could be the phase transition between the superconducting vortex state and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the form of a kink just below the upper critical field and only at temperatures below 1.23 K.

We report penetration depth and resistivity measurements on the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 using a self resonant tank circuit based on a tunnel diode oscillator. For magnetic fields applied near parallel to the \emph{ab}-planes and temperatures below 250 mK, two phase transitions were found. The lower field transition, within the superconducting state, is of a second order and we identify it as the transition from the ordinary vortex state to the Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. The higher field transition marks the change from the FFLO to the normal state. This higher field transition, $H_{c2}$, is of first order up to 900 mK, the highest temperature measured. Our normal state resistivity measurements at temperatures between 100 and 900 mK suggest that the FFLO state is related to the change of the quasi-particle interaction strength, $F^a_0$. Our critical field data for different orientations and temperatures is in good agreement with recent specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity results.

A tuned tank circuit in combination with a nonmetallic diamond anvil cell has been successfully used to measure the change in critical field with angle in k-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 at pressures up to 1.75 kbar and at temperatures down to 70 mK. The critical field has been found to decrease by more than 90% within less than 2 kbar and at a much higher rate for the field applied parallel to the conducting planes. For this orientation, at 1.75 kbar, we have seen a clear change from the ambient pressure behavior of the critical field with temperature at low temperatures. Up to P = 1.75 kbar, the H_c2($θ$) phase diagram is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction for weakly coupled layered superconductors. We have also succeeded in measuring oscillations in the resistivity of the normal state at higher magnetic field. The $α$-orbit Shubnikov-de Haas frequency was found to increase at a rate of 44 T/kbar. Our experiment opens the possibility for further investigations of the effective mass with pressure, especially because the setup is suitable for pulse fields as well.

The Fermi surface topology of the organic superconductor \lbets has been determined using the Shubnikov-de Haas and magnetic breakdown effects and angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations. The former experiments were carried out in pulsed fields of up to 60 T, whereas the latter employed quasistatic fields of up to 30 T. All of these data show that the Fermi-surface topology of \lbets is very similar to that of the most heavily-studied organic superconductor, \cuscn, except in one important respect; the interplane transfer integral in \lbets is a factor $\sim 10$ larger than that in \cuscn . The increased three-dimensionality of \lbets is manifested in radiofrequency penetration-depth measurements, which show a clear dimensional crossover in the behaviour of $H_{c2}(T)$. The radiofrequency measurements have also been used to extract the Labusch parameter determining the fluxoid interactions as a function of temperature, and to map the flux-lattice melting curve.
