The intertwining between competing degrees of freedom, anisotropy, and frustration-induced quantum fluctuations offers an ideal ground to realize exotic quantum phenomena in the rare-earth-based kagome lattice. The magnetic susceptibility reveals the presence of two energy scales in agreement with the INS results. The higher energy state is dominated by CEF excitations, where the lowest Kramers ground-state doublet is well separated from the excited state suggesting that the compound realizes a low-energy state at low temperatures. The second energy scale is witnessed via thermodynamic results that reveal an anomaly at 0.3 K typical of a phase transition, which is attributed to the presence of complex magnetic ordering phenomena. The broad maximum in the specific heat well above 0.3 K indicates the presence of short-range spin correlations that is corroborated by muon spin relaxation rate results. The isothermal magnetization reveals a field-induced 1/3 magnetization plateau at low temperatures. muSR relaxation rate experiments, on the other hand, neither show the signature of a phase transition nor spin-freezing down to 34 mK. The ZF muSR relaxation is governed by the Orbach process and reveals the presence of a fluctuating state owing to the depopulation of crystal field levels reflected as a constant value of relaxation rate in the temperature range 0.4-10 K. NMR results indicate the presence of fluctuating Nd3+ moments down to 1.8 K consistent with muSR experiments. Our comprehensive results reveal that a field-induced quantum critical phenomenon is at play in this frustrated kagome magnet and enable us to construct a phase diagram exemplifying the proximity effect of competing magnetic states. This sets the stage to investigate the broad RE3BWO9 family of rare-earth kagome magnets promising to host exotic quantum states driven by spin-orbit coupling and geometrical frustration.

In rare-earth-based frustrated magnets, the synergistic interplay between spin correlations, spin-orbit coupling and competing exchange interactions provide a promising route to realize exotic quantum states with nontrivial excitations. Here, through thermodynamic and local-probe measurements down to 16 mK, we demonstrate the exotic magnetism and spin dynamics in the nearly perfect emergent honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet TbBO3. The latter embodies a frustrated lattice with a superimposed triangular lattice, constituted by additional Tb3+ ions at the center of each hexagon. Thermodynamic experiments reveal the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with no indications of either long-range order or spin freezing down to 50 mK. Despite sizable antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Tb3+ moments, muon-spin relaxation does not detect any signatures of long-range magnetic order or spin-freezing down to 16 mK. This suggests that the spin-orbit-driven anisotropic exchange interaction engenders a strong frustration, crucial to induce persistent spin dynamics. The specific-heat data exhibit a T^2.2 power-law behavior at low temperatures, suggesting gapless excitations consistent with theoretical predictions. The scaling of muon relaxation rate as a function of the characteristic energy scale for several spin-liquid candidates, including TbBO3, demonstrates a thermally activated behavior. This is consistent with NMR results on TbBO3 and reminiscent of a universal QSL behavior, here attributed to short-range spin correlations. Our experimental results are supported by density functional theory + Hubbard U and crystal electric-field calculations, which propose TbBO3 as a promising platform to realize the theoretically proposed quantum disorder state in an anisotropy-driven frustrated honeycomb lattice.

In this study, we present a thorough investigation into the superconducting state of the ruthenium-based ternary equiatomic compound ScRuSi. Our analysis combines experimental techniques, including muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and low-temperature resistivity measurements, with theoretical insights derived from first-principles calculations. The low-temperature resistivity measurements reveal a distinct superconducting phase transition in the orthorhombic structure of ScRuSi at a critical temperature ($T_\text{C}$) of $2.5$ K. Further, the TF-$μ$SR analysis yields a gap-to-critical-temperature ratio of $2Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.71$, a value consistent with results obtained from previous heat capacity measurements. The temperature dependence of the superconducting normalized depolarization rate is fully described by the isotropic $s$-wave gap model. Additionally, zero-field $μ$SR measurements indicate that the relaxation rate remains nearly identical below and above $T_\text{C}$. This observation strongly suggests the preservation of time-reversal symmetry within the superconducting state. By employing the McMillan-Allen-Dynes equation, we calculate a $T_\text{C}$ of $2.11$ K from first-principles calculations within the density functional theory framework. This calculated value aligns closely with the experimentally determined critical temperature. The coupling between the low-frequency phonon modes and the transition metal d-orbital states play an important role in governing the superconducting pairing in ScRuSi. The combination of experimental and theoretical approaches provides a comprehensive microscopic understanding of the superconducting nature of ScRuSi, offering insights into its critical temperature, pairing symmetry, and the underlying electron-phonon coupling mechanism.

We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic ground state in Ba$_4$NbIr$_3$O$_{12}$, a fractional valent trimer iridate. X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy show that the Ir valence lies between 3+ and 4+ while Nb is pentavalent. Combined dc/ac magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements reveal no magnetic phase transition down to 0.05~K. Despite a significant Weiss temperature ($Θ_{\mathrm{W}} \sim -15$ to $-25$~K) indicating antiferromagnetic correlations, a quantum spin-liquid (QSL) phase emerges and persists down to 0.1~K. This state likely arises from geometric frustration in the edge-sharing equilateral triangle Ir network. Our $μ$SR analysis reveals a two-component depolarization, arising from the coexistence of rapidly (90\%) and slowly (10\%) fluctuating Ir moments. Powder x-ray diffraction and Ir-L$_3$edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy identify ~8-10\% Nb/Ir site-exchange, reducing frustration within part of the Ir network, and likely leading to the faster muon spin relaxation, while the structurally ordered Ir ions remain highly geometrically frustrated, giving rise to the rapidly spin-fluctuating QSL ground state. At low temperatures, the magnetic specific heat varies as $γT + αT^2$, indicating gapless spinon excitations, and possible Dirac QSL features with linear spinon dispersion, respectively.

A material's electronic topology, which is generally described via its Bloch states and the associated bandstructure, will be enriched by the presence of interactions. In metallic settings, the interactions are usually treated through the concept of quasiparticles. Using the genuinely quantum critical heavy fermion compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, we investigate what happens if no well-defined quasiparticles are present. Surprisingly, we discover a topological semimetal phase that emerges from the material's quantum critical state and exhibits a dome structure as a function of magnetic field and pressure. To understand these results, we study a Weyl-Kondo semimetal model at a Kondo destruction quantum critical point. Indeed, it exhibits features in the spectral function that can define topological crossings beyond the quasiparticle picture. We expect our work to stimulate the search for other emergent topological phases.

CeNiSn is a Kondo semimetal where a gap opens at low temperatures due to hybridization between 4$f$ and conduction electrons, but a full insulating state fails to develop. Upon the insertion of hydrogen, long range magnetic order is induced. Here we report zero-field muon-spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of polycrystalline samples of the deuterides CeNiSnD$_x$ ($x$=1.0, 1.8). The muon-spin relaxation results confirm magnetic ordering in the whole sample of CeNiSnD below around 4.7 K, while inelastic neutron scattering reveals two well-defined crystalline-electric field (CEF) excitations at around 13 meV and 34 meV in CeNiSnD, and 5 meV and 27 meV for CeNiSnD$_{1.8}$. These results suggest that hydrogenation leads to the localization of the Ce-4$f$ electrons, giving rise to long-range magnetic order. We propose CEF level schemes for both systems, which predict a ground state moment of 0.96$μ_{\rm B}$/Ce within the $ab$-plane for CeNiSnD$_{1.8}$ and a saturated moment of 1.26$μ_{\rm B}$/Ce along the easy $c$ axis for CeNiSnD, that account for the observed magnetic properties.

Frustrated magnets offer a plethora of exotic magnetic ground states, including quantum spin liquids (QSLs), in which enhanced quantum fluctuations prevent a long-range magnetic ordering of the strongly correlated spins down to lowest temperature. Here we have investigated the trimer based mixed valence hexagonal rhodate Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$ using a combination of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. Despite the substantial antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, as evident from the Weiss temperature ($θ_{\mathrm{W}}\sim -35$ to -45 K), among the Rh-local moments, neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin-freezing is observed down to at least 50 mK, in ac-susceptibility, specific heat and ZF-$μ$SR measurements (down to 0.26 K). We ascribe the absence of any magnetic transition to enhanced quantum fluctuations as a result of geometrical frustration arising out of the edge-sharing equilateral Rh-triangular network in the structure. Our longitudinal-field $μ$SR result evidences persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.26~K, thus stabilizing a dynamic QSL ground state in Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$. Furthermore, the magnetic specific heat ($C_{\mathrm{m}}$) data at low-$T$ reveal a significant $T$-linear contribution plus a quadratic $T$-dependence. A $T$-linear behavior is evocative of gapless spin excitations, while the $T^2$-term of $C_{\mathrm{m}}$ may indicate the Dirac QSL phenomenology of the spinon excitations with a linear dispersion.

After several decades of studies of high-temperature superconductivity, there is no compelling theory for the mechanism yet; however, the spin fluctuations have been widely believed to play a crucial role in forming the superconducting Cooper pairs. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity near 80 K in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure provides a new platform to elucidate the origins of high-temperature superconductivity. We perform elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ at ambient pressure. No magnetic order can be identified down to 10 K. The absence of long-range magnetic order in neutron diffraction measurements may be ascribed to the smallness of the magnetic moment. However, we observe a weak flat spin-fluctuation signal at $\sim$ 45 meV in the inelastic scattering spectra. The observed spin excitations could be interpreted as a result of strong interlayer and weak intralayer magnetic couplings for stripe-type antiferromagnetic orders. Our results provide crucial information on the spin dynamics and are thus important for understanding the superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.

Due to the complex interactions between rare-earth elements and transition metals, as well as between themselves, rare-earth transition-metal oxides are likely to exhibit highly intriguing and novel magnetic structures and dynamic behaviours. Rare-earth elements in these compounds frequently demonstrate unusual behaviours in their crystal-field (CF) excitations, which necessitate thorough studies for in-depth comprehensions. When cooling from 10 K to 1.5 K through the magnetic ordering temperature of $Er^{3+}$ at 4.1 K, we observed a significant energy shift of the low-lying CF excitation of $Er^{3+}$ in erbium orthoferrite ($ErFeO_3$) from 0.32 meV to 0.75 meV utilizing the inelastic neutron-scattering technique. A sound CF model was proposed for $Er^{3+}$ in $ErFeO_3$ by fitting to the observed CF excitation peaks, which enables to explain all the observed experimental results in a very consistent manner. According to the model, the ground crystal field level of $Er^{3+}$, which corresponds to the lowest Kramers doublet supposed to be at zero energy transfer, has been shifted by the internal magnetic fields induced by both $Er^{3+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ spin orders below and above the $Er^{3+}$ ordering temperature, respectively. Additional measurements in various magnetic fields offer compelling evidence in favour of this hypothesis. The measured external field dependence of the CF excitation energy led to a derivation of the internal field of $Er^{3+}$ as 0.54 T, which is strongly corroborated by theoretical modelling. Additionally, the g-factor for the $Er^{3+}$ ground state in $ErFeO_3$ shows an exceptionally significant anisotropy.

We have investigated the nature of ground state of Sr3NiPtO6 using magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T)$, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. The $χ(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ do not exhibit any pronounced anomaly that can be associated with a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state. Our $μ$SR data confirm the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.04 K. Furthermore, the muon spin relaxation rate increases below 20 K and exhibits temperature independent behavior at low temperature, very similar to that observed in a quantum spin-liquid system. The INS data show a large excitation near 8~meV, and the analysis of the INS data reveals a singlet CEF ground state with a first excited CEF doublet state at $Δ_{\rm CEF}$ = 7.7 meV. The estimated CEF parameters reveal a strong planar anisotropy in the calculated $χ(T)$, consistent with the reported behavior of the $χ(T)$ of single crystal Sr3NiPtO6. We propose that the nonmagnetic singlet ground state and a large $Δ_{\rm CEF}$ (much larger than the exchange interaction $\mathcal{J}_{\rm ex}$) are responsible for the absence of long-range magnetic ordering and can mimic a classical spin-liquid behavior in this quasi-1D spin chain system Sr3NiPtO6. The classical spin-liquid ground state observed in Sr3NiPtO6 is due to the single-ion property, which is different from the quantum spin-liquid ground state observed in geometrically frustrated systems, where two-ion exchanges play an important role.

The compound Ba3HoRu2O9 magnetically orders at 50 K (TN1) followed by another complex magnetic ordering at 10.2 K (TN2). The 2nd magnetic phase transition was characterized by the co-existence of two competing magnetic ground states associated with two different magnetic wave vectors (K1=1/2 0 0 and K2=1/4 1/4 0). Here, we have discussed the origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity, which is not known yet. We demonstrate through time-of-flight Neutron diffraction and theoretical calculation that the non-collinear structure involving two different magnetic ions, Ru(4d) and Ho(4f), break the spatial inversion symmetry via inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (D-M) interaction through strong 4d-4f magnetic correlation, which shifts the oxygen atoms and results in non-zero polarization. Such an observation of inverse D-M interaction from two different magnetic ions which caused ferroelectricity is rarely observed. We have systematically studied the spin and dipolar dynamics, which exhibit intriguing behavior with shorter coherence lengths of 2nd magnetic phase associated with the k2-wave vector. The results manifest the development of finite-size magnetoelectric domains instead of true long-range ordering which justifies the experimentally obtained low value of ferroelectric polarization. The synchrotron XRD analysis predicts a non-centrosymmetric space group P-62c. Furthermore, we have investigated the effect of external pressure on this complex magnetism. The result reveals an enhancement of ordering temperature by the application of external pressure (1.6 K/GPa). The external pressure might favor stabilizing the magnetic ground state associated with 2nd magnetic phase. Our study shows an unconventional mechanism of spin-driven ferroelectricity.

[1] showed that a collection of Co$_2$C NPs exhibit an exchange bias (EB) effect below T$_{EB}$ = 50 K and also a spin glass (SG) state below T$_{SG}$ = 5 K. We use magnetic, electrical transport, specific heat, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements to explore further the magnetic properties of these NPs. We uncover the onset of Kondo localization at Kondo temperature T$_K$ (= 40.1 K), near the onset of EB effect. A crossover from the Kondo-screened scenario to an RKKY interaction-dominated regime is also observed for T < T$_K$. Specific heat measurements confirm Kondo localization and heavy fermionic nature in Co$_2$C at low T. At low T, zero field $μ$SR spectra reveal a dominant magnetically disordered fraction with slow relaxation and a smaller fraction with short-range order exhibiting fast relaxation, with no evidence of long-range magnetic order. We observe an increase in this fast relaxation rate between T$_{EB}$ and T$_{SG}$, suggesting a slowing down of the fluctuating local magnetic environment around muons. Transverse field $μ$SR spectra show the emergence of a stable, multi-peaked local magnetic field distribution below T$_{EB}$. Longitudinal field $μ$SR spectra shows distinct changes in the dynamics of fluctuations suggesting the presence of a frozen glassy like state below 6 K. Our results suggest that below T$_{EB}$, Co$_2$C NPs pellet develops a magnetic interface, separating disordered and short-range order fractions. The Exchange interaction that sets in below T$_{EB}$ at the interface couples them and suppresses the fluctuations. With the suppression of magnetic fluctuations below T$_{EB}$, strong correlation effects in the electronic state of Co$_2$C lead to Kondo localization.

Filled skutterudite compounds have gained attention recently as an innovative platforms for studying intriguing low-temperature superconducting properties. Regarding the symmetry of the superconducting gap, contradicting findings from several experiments have been made for LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$ and its isoelectronic counterpart, LaOs$_{4}$As$_{12}$. In this vein, we report comprehensive bulk and microscopic results on LaOs$_{4}$As$_{12}$ utilizing specific heat analysis and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. Bulk superconductivity with $T_C$ = 3.2 K was confirmed by heat capacity. The superconducting ground state of the filled-skutterudite LaOs$_{4}$As$_{12}$ compound is found to have two key characteristics: superfluid density exhibits saturation type behavior at low temperature, which points to a fully gapped superconductivity with gap value of $2Δ/k_BT_C$ = 3.26; additionally, the superconducting state does not show any sign of spontaneous magnetic field, supporting the preservation of time-reversal symmetry. The low temperature power-law behavior of $C$/$T$ $\propto$ $χ$ $\propto$ $T^{-1+α}$, the isotherm magnetization, $M \sim H^α$ with the exponent $α$ = 0.45 - 0.55, and the $T$-linear resistivity $Δρ$ $\sim$ $T^ε$ with $ε\sim$ 1 are found to be consistent with the formation of quantum Griffiths singularities in the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) regime. We further investigated the spin dynamics of a polycrystalline sample of CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$, using zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. ZF-$μ$SR measurements do not reveal any sign of long-range magnetic ordering down to 70~mK. The electronic relaxation rate ($λ$) below 0.5~K increases rapidly and shows a thermal activation-like characteristic [$T$log($λ$)$\sim$ $T$] over the entire measured temperature range between 70~mK to 4~K, indicating the presence of low energy spin fluctuations in CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$. LF-$μ$SR measurements show a time-field ($t/H^η$) scaling of the $μ$SR asymmetry indicating a quantum critical behavior of this compound. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering study on the polycrystalline sample reveals two crystal field excitations near 19 and 33~meV. These features collectively provide strong evidence of NFL behavior in CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$ due to the formation of Griffiths phase close to a $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0~K quantum critical point.

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin fluctuations in Sr$_{1.8}$La$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, where Lanthanum do** triggers a Lifshitz transition by pushing the van Hove singularity in the $γ$ band to the Fermi energy. Strong spin fluctuations emerge at an incommensurate wave vector $\mathbf{Q}_{ic} = (0.3,0.3)$, corresponding to the nesting vector between $α$ and $β$ Fermi sheets. The incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations shift toward $(0.25,0.25)$ with increasing energy up to ${\sim}110$ meV. By contrast, scatterings near the ferromagnetic wave vectors $\mathbf{Q} = (1,0)$ and $(1,1)$ remain featureless at all energies. This contradicts the weak-coupling perspective that suggests a sharp enhancement of ferromagnetic susceptibility due to the divergence of density of states in the associated $γ$ band. Our findings imply that ferromagnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and related materials do not fit into the weak-coupling paradigm, but instead are quasi-local fluctuations induced by Hund's coupling. This imposes significant constraints for the pairing mechanism involving spin fluctuations.

Here we have performed detailed first principles calculations for the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Ba$_6$Cr$_2$S$_{10}$ to study the origin of the anti-ferromagnetic exchange interaction between spins on Cr ions for the spin-chain compound Ba$_6$Cr$_2$S$_{10}$ synthesised recently. Most importantly, we have found the co-existence of a charge density wave phase along one line and an anti-ferromagnetic spin chain along another. The dimerization of sulfur atoms loosely bonded with Ba atoms drives the system into an insulating state owing to the formation of charge density wave. Meanwhile, the small size of the effective Hubbard $U$ parameter ($\sim 0.5$ eV) due to electrostatic screening mainly accounts for the anti-ferromagnetic ground state. This co-existence equips us with a platform to tune the charge and spin degrees of freedom independently. Moreover, there exists a next-nearest-neighbouring anti-ferromagnetic interaction along the chain, which could bring forward spin frustration and hence quantum spin liquid.

The disordered pyrochlore oxide Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ shows the signatures of field-induced spin freezing with remnant zero-point spin-ice entropy at 5 kOe magnetic field. We have performed zero-field and longitudinal field Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) studies on Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Our zero field studies reveal the absence of both long-range ordering and spin freezing down to 62 mK. The $μ$SR relaxation rate exhibits a temperature-independent plateau below 4 K, indicating a dynamic ground state of fluctuating spins similar to the well-known spin ice system Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. The low-temperature spin fluctuations persist in the longitudinal field of 20 kOe as well and show unusual field dependence of the relaxation rate, which is uncommon for a spin-liquid system. Our results, combined with the previous studies do not show any evidence of spin ice or spin glass ground state, rather point to a disorder-induced dynamic magnetic ground state in the Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ material.

The sesquioxide, Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$, has been a material of intense interest in recent years due to reports of an anomalous giant magnetodielectric effect and emergent mixed crystal field-phonon (vibronic) excitations below a putative antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 6.2 K. The claim of long-range magnetic order in this material is based on heat capacity and temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements; however, multiple neutron diffraction studies have been unable to distinguish any magnetic Bragg peaks. In this article, we present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the low-temperature phase in symmetry-broken polycrystalline Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$ using a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, triple-axis and time-of-flight (TOF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR). Our measurements and subsequent analysis confirm that the transition at T$_{N}$ can be associated with the ordering of moments on the Ce$^{3+}$ site. Both a spontaneous magnetic order observed with $μ$SR and a dispersive spin-wave spectrum observed with inelastic neutron scattering suggest a model wherein planar dipoles order antiferromagnetically. Notable inconsistencies between $μ$SR and neutron scattering data within the dipole picture provide strong evidence for the ordering of higher-order moments.

Magnetic order in most materials occurs when magnetic ions with finite moments in a crystalline lattice arrange in a particular pattern below the ordering temperature determined by exchange interactions between the ions. However, when the crystal electric field (CEF) effect results in a spin-singlet ground state on individual magnetic sites, the collective ground state of the system can either remain non-magnetic, or more intriguingly, the exchange interactions between neighboring ions, provided they are sufficiently strong, can admix the excited CEF levels, resulting in a magnetically ordered ground state. The collective magnetic excitations in such a state are so-called spin excitons that describe the CEF transitions propagating through the lattice. In most cases, spin excitons originating from CEF levels of a localized single ion are dispersion-less in momentum (reciprocal) space and well-defined in both the magnetically ordered and paramagnetic states. Here we use thermodynamic and neutron scattering experiments to study stoichiometric Ni2Mo3O8 without site disorder, where Ni2+ ions form a bipartite honeycomb lattice comprised of two triangular lattices, with ions subject to the tetrahedral and octahedral crystalline environment, respectively. We find that in both types of ions, the CEF excitations have nonmagnetic singlet ground states, yet the material has long-range magnetic order. Furthermore, CEF spin excitons from the triangular-lattice arrangement of tetrahedral sites form, in both the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, a dispersive diffusive pattern around the Brillouin zone boundary in reciprocal space. The present work thus demonstrates that spin excitons in an ideal triangular lattice magnet can have dispersive excitations, irrespective of the existence of static magnetic order, and this phenomenon is most likely due to spin entanglement and geometric frustrations.

For T = Co, a shoulder was observed at 7.7 meV close to the CEF excitation peak centered at 7.2 meV. The shoulder is attributed to a bound state of the CEF and low-lying optical phonon excitations.

Ba$_{8}$Ga$_{16}$Ge$_{30}$ (BGG) has a loosely bound guest Ba atom trapped inside rigid Ga/Ge cage structures. Avoided crossings between acoustic phonons and the flat guest atom branches have been proposed to be the source of the low lattice thermal conductivity of BGG. Ga/Ge site disorder with Ga and Ge exchanging places in different unit cells has also been reported. We used time-of-flight neutron scattering to measure the complete phonon spectrum in a large single crystal of BGG and compared these results with predictions of density functional theory to elucidate the effect of the disorder on heat-carrying phonons. Experimental results agreed much better with the calculation assuming the disorder than with the calculation assuming the ordered configuration. Although atomic masses of Ga and Ge are nearly identical, we found that disorder strongly reduces phonon group velocities, which significantly reduces thermal conductivity. Our work points at a new path towards optimizing thermoelectrics.

The superconducting order parameter of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaRhSn is investigated by means of low temperature measurements of the specific heat, muon-spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) and the tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) based method. The specific heat and magnetic penetration depth [$λ(T)$] show an exponentially activated temperature dependence, demonstrating fully gapped superconductivity in LaRhSn. The temperature dependence of $λ^{-2}(T)$ deduced from the TDO based method and $μ$SR show nearly identical behavior, which can be well described by a single-gap $s$-wave model, with a zero temperature gap value of $Δ(0)=1.77(4)k_BT_c$. The zero-field $μ$SR spectra do not show detectable changes upon cooling below $T_c$, and therefore there is no evidence for time-reversal-symmetry breaking in the superconducting state.

Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) were used to investigate the superconducting properties of the filled-skutterudite compound LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$. A two-gap isotropic ($s+s$)-wave model can explain the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. Zero field $μ$SR measurements confirm that the time-reversal symmetry does not break upon entering the superconducting state. The measurements of lattice dynamics at 2, 20 and 300 K revealed temperature dependencies of the phonon modes that do not follow strictly a hardening of phonon frequencies upon cooling as expected within the quasi-harmonic picture. The 20~K data rather mark a turning point for the majority of the phonon frequencies. Indeed a hardening is observed approaching 20~K from above, while for a few branches a weak softening is visible upon further cooling to 2~K. The observed dispersion relations of phonon modes throughout the Brillouin zone matches with the DFT prediction quite closely. Our results point out that cubic LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$ is a good reference material for studying multiband superconductivity, including those with lower crystallographic symmetries such as iron arsenide-based superconductors.

A magnetic phase transition is identified at $T \approx 170$ K, whereas no trace of structural transition is observed down to 6 K. Combining Rietveld refinement with irreducible representations, the spin configuration of Cr ions in Cr$_2$GaN is depicted as an incommensurate sinusoidal modulated structure characterized by a propagating vector ${k}$=(0.365, 0.365, 0). Upon warming up to the paramagnetic state, the magnetic order parameter closely resembles to the temperature dependence of $c$-axis lattice parameter, suggesting strong magneto-elastic coupling in this compound. Therefore, Cr$_2$GaN provides a potential platform for the exploration of magnetically tuned properties such as magnetoelectric, magnetostrictive and magnetocaloric effects, as well as their applications.

We present the results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron scattering on the Ce-based quasikagome lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$Sn ($x=0.1$ to 0.75). Our ZF-$μ$SR results reveal the absence of static long-range magnetic order down to 0.05~K in $x = 0.1$ single crystals. The weak temperature-dependent plateaus of the dynamic spin fluctuations below 0.2~K in ZF-$μ$SR together with its longitudinal-field (LF) dependence between 0 and 3~kG indicate the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at $T$ = 0.05~K without static magnetic order. On the other hand, $C_{\text{4f}}$/$T$ increases as --log $T$ on cooling below 0.9~K, passes through a broad maximum at 0.13~K and slightly decreases on further cooling. The ac-susceptibility also exhibits a frequency independent broad peak at 0.16~K, which is prominent with an applied field $H$ along $c$-direction. We, therefore, argue that such a behavior for $x=0.1$ (namely, a plateau in spin relaxation rate ($λ$) below 0.2~K and a linear $T$ dependence in $C_{\text{4f}}$ below 0.13~K) can be attributed to a metallic spin-liquid (SL) ground state near the quantum critical point in the frustrated Kondo lattice. The LF-$μ$SR study suggests that the out of kagome plane spin fluctuations are responsible for the SL behavior. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) of $x$ = 0.1 reveals gapless magnetic excitations, which are also supported by the behavior of $C_{\text{4f}}$ proportional to $T^{1.1}$ down to 0.06~K.

We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation asymmetry reveals the appearance of a spontaneous magnetic field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, indicating that time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is broken in the superconducting state. Although this behavior is commonly associated with non-unitary or mixed singlet-triplet pairing, our group-theoretical analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy alongside density functional theory calculations indicates that unconventional mechanisms are pretty unlikely. Therefore, we have hypothesized that TRS breaking may occur via a conventional electron-phonon process.

The ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological metals $R$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($R$ = K, Rb, Cs) with a layered kagome structure provide a unique opportunity to investigate the interplay between charge order, superconductivity and topology. Here, we report muon-spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements performed on CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ across a broad temperature range, in order to uncover the nature of the charge-density wave order and superconductivity in this material. From zero-field $μ$SR, we find that spontaneous magnetic fields appear below 50 K which is well below the charge-density wave transition ($T^* \sim 93$ K). We show that these spontaneous fields are dynamic in nature making it difficult to associate them with a hidden static order. The superconducting state of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is found to preserve time-reversal symmetry and the transverse-field $μ$SR results are consistent with a superconducting state that has two fully open gaps.

We address the concomitant metal-insulator transition (MIT) and antiferromagnetic ordering in the novel pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7 by combining x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray and neutron diffractions and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations. The temperature dependent powder x-ray diffraction clearly rules out any change in the lattice symmetry below the MIT, nevertheless a clear anomaly in the Ir-O-Ir bond angle and Ir-O bond length is evident at the onset of MIT. From the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopic study of Ir-L3 and L2 edges, the effective spin-orbit coupling is found to be intermediate, at least quite far from the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling limit. Powder neutron diffraction measurement is in line with an all-in-all-out magnetic structure of the Ir-tetrahedra in this compound, which is quite common among rare-earth pyrochlore iridates. The sharp change in the Ir-O-Ir bond angle around the MIT possibly arises from the exchange striction mechanism, which favors an enhanced electron correlation via weakening of Ir-Ir orbital overlap and an insulating phase below TMI . The theoretical calculations indicate an insulating state for shorter bond angle validating the experimental observation. Our DFT calculations show a possibility of intriguing topological phase below a critical value of the Ir-O distance, which is shorter than the experimentally observed bond length. Therefore, a topological state may be realized in bulk Eu2Ir2O7 sample if the Ir-O bond length can be reduced by the application of sufficient external pressure.

CeRh$_3$Si$_2$ has been reported to exhibit metamagnetic transitions below 5~K, a giant crystal field splitting, and anisotropic magnetic properties from single crystal magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Here we report results of neutron and x-ray scattering studies of the magnetic structure and crystal-field excitations to further understand the magnetism of this compound. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) reveal a $J_z$\,=\,1/2 groundstate for Ce when considering the crystallographic $a$ direction as quantization axis, thus explaining the anisotropy of the static susceptibility. Furthermore, we find a total splitting of 78\,meV for the $J$\,=\,5/2 multiplet. The neutron diffraction study in zero field reveals that on cooling from the paramagnetic state, the system first orders at $T_{\text{N}_1}=4.7$\,K in a longitudinal spin density wave with ordered Ce moments along the $b$-axis (i.e. the [0 1 0] crystal direction) and an incommensurate propagation vector $\textbf{k}=(0,0.43,0$). Below the lower-temperature transition $T_{\text{N}_2}=4.48$\,K, the propagation vector locks to the commensurate value $\textbf{k}=(0,0.5,0)$, with a so-called lock-in transition. Our neutron diffraction study in applied magnetic field $H\parallel b$-axis shows a change in the commensurate propagation vector and development of a ferromagnetic component at $H=3$\,kOe, followed by a series of transitions before the fully field-induced ferromagnetic phase is reached at $H = 7$\,kOe. This explains the nature of the steps previously reported in field-dependent magnetization measurements. A very similar behaviour is also observed for the $H\parallel$ [0 1 1] crystal direction.

The search of novel quasi one-dimensional (1D) materials is one of the important aspects in the field of material science. Toroidal moment, the order parameter of ferrotoroidic order, can be generated by a head-to-tail configuration of magnetic moment. It has been theoretically proposed that one-dimensional (1D) dimerized and antiferromagnetic-like spin chain hosts ferrotoroidicity and has the toroidal moment composed of only two antiparallel spins. Here, we report a ferrotoroidic candidate of Ba6Cr2S10 with such a theoretical model of spin chain. The structure consists of unique dimerized face-sharing CrS6 octahedral chains along the c axis. An antiferromagnetic-like ordering at ~10 K breaks both space- and time-reversal symmetries and the magnetic point group of mm'2' allows three ferroic orders in Ba6Cr2S10: (anti)ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and ferrotoroidic orders. Our investigation reveals that Ba6Cr2S10 is a rare ferrotoroidic candidate with quasi 1D spin chain, which can be considered as a starting point for the further exploration of the physics and applications of ferrotoroidicity.

We report neutron scattering measurements of the spinel oxide LiGaCr$_{4}$O$_{8}$, in which magnetic ions Cr$^{3+}$ form a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Our experiments reveal the coexistence of a nearly dispersionless resonance mode and dispersive spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, which can be quantitatively described by a quantum spin model of hexagonal loops and linear spin wave theory with the same set of exchange parameters, respectively. Comparison to other Cr spinel oxides reveals a linear relationship between the resonance energy and lattice constant across all these materials, which is in agreement with our hexagonal loop calculations. Our results suggest a unified picture for spin resonances in Cr spinel oxides.

The family of rare earth chalcogenides $ARECh_{2}$ (A = alkali or monovalent ions, RE = rare earth, and Ch = O, S, Se, and Te) appears as an inspiring playground for studying quantum spin liquids (QSL). The crucial low-energy spin dynamics remain to be uncovered. By employing muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and zero-field (ZF) AC susceptibility down to 50 mK, we are able to identify the gapless QSL in $NaYbSe_{2}$, a representative member with an effective spin-1/2, and explore its unusual spin dynamics. The ZF $μ$SR experiments unambiguously rule out spin ordering or freezing in $NaYbSe_{2}$ down to 50 mK, two orders of magnitude smaller than the exchange coupling energies. The spin relaxation rate, $λ$, approaches a constant below 0.3 K, indicating finite spin excitations featured by a gapless QSL ground state. This is consistently supported by our AC susceptibility measurements. The careful analysis of the longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR spectra reveals a strong spatial correlation and a temporal correlation in the spin-disordered ground state, highlighting the unique feature of spin entanglement in the QSL state. The observations allow us to establish an experimental H-T phase diagram. The study offers insight into the rich and exotic magnetism of the rare earth family.

We investigate the magnetic and crystal electric field (CEF) states of the Kondo lattice system CeCuGa3 by muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A noncentrosymmetric BaNiSn3-type tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4mm) is inferred from x-ray as well as from neutron powder diffraction. The low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show an anomaly near 2.3 - 2.5~K associated with long range magnetic ordering, which is further confirmed by muSR and neutron diffraction data. The neutron powder diffraction collected at 1.7 K shows the presence of magnetic Bragg peaks indexed by an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector k = (0.148, 0.148, 0) and the magnetic structure is best described by a longitudinal spin density wave with ordered moments lying in ab-plane. An analysis of the INS data based on a CEF model reveals the presence of two magnetic excitations near 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV. The magnetic heat capacity data suggest an overall CEF splitting of 20.7 meV, however the excitation between 20 and 30 meV is very broad and weak in our INS data, but could provide an evidence of CEF level in this energy range in agreement with the magnetic entropy. Our analysis of INS data based on the CEF-phonon model indicates that the two excitations at 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV have their origin in CEF-phonon coupling (i.e. splitting of one CEF peak into two peaks, called vibron), with an overall splitting of 28.16 meV, similar to the case of CeCuAl3 and CeAuAl3.

We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a layered cage compound Ba3Rh4Ge16. Similar to Ba3Ir4Ge16, the compound is composed of 2D networks of cage units, formed by noncubic Rh-Ge building blocks, in marked contrast to the reported rattling compounds. The electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat capacity, and muSR measurements unveiled moderately coupled s-wave superconductivity with a critical temperature Tc = 7.0 K, the upper critical field ~ 2.5 T, the electron-phonon coupling strength ~ 0.80, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter ~ 7.89. The mass reduction by the substitution of Ir by Rh is believed to be responsible for the enhancement of Tc and coupling between the cage and guest atoms. Our results highlight the importance of the atomic weight of the framework in cage compounds in controlling the electron-phonon coupling strength and Tc.

We report the finding of a novel pairing state in a newly discovered superconductor Na$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. This material has a noncentrosymmetric quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure and is superconducting at $T_{\mathrm{C}}\sim$ 8.0 K. We find that the magnetic penetration depth data suggests the presence of a nodal line $p_z$-wave pairing state with zero magnetic moment using transverse-field muon-spin rotation (TF-$μ$SR) measurements. The nodal gap observed in Na$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ compound is consistent with that observed in isostructural (K,Cs)$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ compounds using TF-$μ$SR measurements. The observed pairing state is consistent with a three-band model spin-fluctuation calculation, which reveals the $S_z=0$ spin-triplet pairing state with the $\sin k_z$ pairing symmetry. The long-sought search for chiral superconductivity with topological applications could be aided by such a novel triplet $S_z=0$ $p$-wave pairing state.

Magnetism of the spin-$\frac12$ $α$-KVOPO$_4$ is studied by thermodynamic measurements, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, and density-functional band-structure calculations. Ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq 15.9$ K and the saturation field of $μ_0H_s\simeq 11.3$ T suggest the predominant ferromagnetic coupling augmented by a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange that leads to a short-range order below 5 K and the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}\simeq 2.7$ K in zero field. Magnetic structure with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(0,\frac12,0)$ and the ordered magnetic moment of 0.58 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K exposes a non-trivial spin lattice where strong ferromagnetic dimers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The reduction in the ordered magnetic moment with respect to the classical value (1 $μ_{\rm B}$) indicates sizable quantum fluctuations in this setting, despite the predominance of ferromagnetic exchange. We interpret this tendency toward ferromagnetism as arising from the effective orbital order in the folded chains of the VO$_6$ octahedra.

We report an investigation of the superconducting properties of the hexagonal noncentrosymmetric compound LaPdIn. Electrical resistivity, specific heat and ac susceptibility measurements demonstrate the presence of bulk superconductivity below $T_c$ = 1.6 K. The specific heat, together with the penetration depth measured using transverse-field muon spin rotation and the tunnel diode oscillator based method, are well described by single gap $s$-wave superconductivity, with a gap magnitude of 1.8$k_BT_c$. From zero-field muon spin relaxation results no evidence is found for the spontaneous emergence of magnetic fields in the superconducting state, indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved. Band structure calculations reveal that there is a relatively weak effect of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on the electronic bands near the Fermi level, which is consistent with there being negligible singlet-triplet mixing due to broken inversion symmetry. On the other hand, isostructural LuPdIn and LaPtIn do not exhibit superconductivity down to 0.4 K, which may be due to these systems having a smaller density of states at the Fermi level.

Topological magnons are bosonic analogues of topological fermions in electronic systems. They have been studied extensively by theory but rarely realized by experiment. Here, by performing inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of a two-dimensional ferromagnet CrBr$_3$, which was classified as Dirac magnon semimetal featured by the linear bands crossing at the Dirac points, we fully map out the magnetic excitation spectra, and reveal that there is an apparent gap of $\sim$3.5~meV between the acoustic and optical branches of the magnons at the K point. By collaborative efforts between experiment and theoretical calculations using a five-orbital Hubbard model obtained from first-principles calculations to derive the exchange parameters, we find that a Hamiltonian with Heisenberg exchange interactions, next-nearest-neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, and single-ion anisotropy is more appropriate to describe the system. Calculations using the model show that the lower and upper magnon bands separated by the gap exhibit Chern numbers of $\pm1$. These results indicate that CrBr$_3$ is a topological magnon insulator, where the nontrivial gap is a result of the DM interaction.

We report a systematic study of the $5d$-electron-doped system Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.15$). With increasing $x$, the orthorhombic $b$~axis decreases slightly while accompanying changes in $a$ and $c$ leave the unit cell volume almost unchanged. Inelastic neutron scattering, along with thermal and transport measurements, reveal that for the Kondo semiconductor CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, the low-temperature energy gap which is proposed to be a consequence of strong $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization, is suppressed by a small amount of Ir substitution for Fe, and that the system adopts a metallic ground state with an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level. The charge or transport gap collapses (at $x=$~0.04) faster than the spin gap with Ir substitution. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate that the system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic order below a Néel temperature, $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, of 3.1(2)~K for $x = 0.15$. The ordered moment is estimated to be smaller than 0.07(1)~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ce although the trivalent state of Ce is confirmed by Ce L$_3$-edge x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. It is suggested that the $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization gap, which plays an important role in the unusually high ordering temperatures observed in Ce$T_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$ = Ru and Os), may not be necessary for the onset of magnetic order with a low $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ seen here in Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Our zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF)-$μ$SR results demonstrate the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations below 4.0 K. The saturation of the ZF relaxation rate at low temperature, together with its weak dependence on the longitudinal field between 0 and 3.2 kG, indicates the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at 80 mK without static order. Neutron scattering study reveals the gaped magnetic excitations with three modes at 7.7, 13.5 and 33 meV. Our DFT calculations reveal that the next nearest neighbors (NNN) AFM exchange ($J_{AFM}$ = 31 meV) is stronger than the NN FM exchange ($J_{FM}$ = -21 meV) indicating the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the physics of Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ can be explained by an alternating AFM chain rather than the honeycomb lattice.

In the present work we demonstrate that C-doped Zr$_{5}$Pt$_{3}$ is an electron-phonon superconductor (with critical temperature T$_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.7\,K) with a nonsymmorphic topological Dirac nodal-line semimetal state, which we report here for the first time. The superconducting properties of Zr$_{5}$Pt$_{3}$C$_{0.5}$ have been investigated by means of magnetization and muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that at low temperatures the depolarization rate is almost constant and can be well described by a single-band $s-$wave model with a superconducting gap of $2Δ(0)/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.84, close to the value of BCS theory. From transverse field $μ$SR analysis we estimate the London penetration depth $λ_{L}$ = 469 nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{s}$ = 2$\times$10$^{26}$ $m^{-3}$, and effective mass m$^{*}$ = 1.584 $m_{e}$. Zero field $μ$SR confirms the absence of any spontaneous magnetic moment in the superconducting ground state. To gain additional insights into the electronic ground state of C-doped Zr$_5$Pt$_3$, we have also performed first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The observed homogenous electronic character of the Fermi surface as well as the mutual decrease of $T_\mathrm{C}$ and density of states at the Fermi level are consistent with the experimental findings. However, the band structure reveals the presence of robust, gapless fourfold-degenarate nodal lines protected by $6_{3}$ screw rotations and glide mirror planes. Therefore, Zr$_5$Pt$_3$ represents a novel, unprecedented condensed matter system to investigate the intricate interplay between superconductivity and topology.

CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $μ$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering, we propose a CEF-level scheme which accounts for the easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy, where the low lying first excited CEF exhibits significantly stronger hybridization than the ground state. These results suggest that the orbital anisotropy of the ground state and low lying excited state doublets are important for realizing anisotropic electronic coupling between the $f$- and conduction electrons, which gives rise to the highly anisotropic hybridization observed in photoemission experiments.

Evidence for broken time reversal symmetry (TRS) has been found in the superconducting states of the $R_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ (R = Sc, Y, Lu) compounds with a centrosymmetric caged crystal structure, but the origin of this phenomenon is unresolved. Here we report neutron diffraction measurements of single crystals with $R$=Lu, as well as measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth using a self-induced tunnel diode-oscillator (TDO) based technique, together with band structure calculations using density functional theory. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the system crystallizes in a tetragonal caged structure, and that one of nominal Lu sites in the Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ structure is occupied by Sn, yielding a composition Lu$_{5-x}$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18+x}$ ($x=1$). The low temperature penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ exhibits an exponential temperature dependence below around $0.3T_c$, giving clear evidence for fully gapped superconductivity. The derived superfluid density is reasonably well accounted for by a single gap $s$-wave model, whereas agreement cannot be found for models of TRS breaking states with two-component order parameters. Moreover, band structure calculations reveal multiple bands crossing the Fermi level, and indicate that the aforementioned TRS breaking states would be expected to have nodes on the Fermi surface, in constrast to the observations.

We also present the results of magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements on ZrRuAs, which reveal bulk superconductivity below 7.9~K. The temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth obtained from the analysis of the TF-$μ$SR spectra below $T_{\rm c}$ is well described by an isotropic $s$-wave gap model as also inferred from an analysis of the heat capacity in the superconducting state. ZF $μ$SR data do not show any significant change in the muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition temperature indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of this material.

Quantum entanglement is a quantum mechanical phenomenon where the quantum state of a many-body system with many degrees of freedom cannot be described independently of the state of each body with a given degree of freedom, no matter how far apart in space each body is. Entanglement is not only considered a resource in quantum information but also believed to affect complex condensed matter systems. Detecting and quantifying multi-particle entanglement in a many-body system is thus of fundamental significance for both quantum information science and condensed matter physics. Here, we detect and quantify multipartite entanglement in a spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in a bulk solid. Multipartite entanglement was detected using quantum Fisher information which was obtained using dynamic susceptibility measured via inelastic neutron scattering. The scaling behaviour of quantum Fisher information was found to identify the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain to belong to a class of strongly entangled quantum phase transitions with divergent multipartite entanglement.

CeIrSn with a quasikagome Ce lattice in the hexagonal basal plane is a strongly valence fluctuating compound, as we confirm by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering, with a high Kondo temperature of $T_{\mathrm{K}}\sim 480$\,K. We report a negative in-plane thermal expansion $α/T$ below 2\,K, which passes through a broad minimum near 0.75\,K. Volume and $a$-axis magnetostriction for $B \parallel a$ are markedly negative at low fields and change sign before a sharp metamagnetic anomaly at 6\,T. These behaviors are unexpected for Ce-based intermediate valence systems, which should feature positive expansivity. Rather they point towards antiferromagnetic correlations at very low temperatures. This is supported by muon spin relaxation measurements down to 0.1\,K, which provide microscopic evidence for a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Comparison with isostructural CeRhSn suggests that these antiferromagnetic correlations emerging at $T\ll T_{\mathrm{K}}$ result from geometrical frustration.

The existence of orbital-dependent electronic correlations has been recognized as an essential ingredient to describe the physics of iron-based superconductors. NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron based superconductors, exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion below $T_s\approx 60$ K, forming an electronic nematic phase with two 90$^\circ$ rotated (twinned) domains, and orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N\approx 42$ K. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves in uniaxial pressure-detwinned NaFeAs. By comparing the data with combined density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we conclude that spin waves up to an energy scale of $E_\text{crossover} \approx 100$ meV are dominated by $d_{yz}$-$d_{yz}$ intra-orbital scattering processes, which have the two-fold ($C_2$) rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice. On the other hand, the spin wave excitations above $E_\text{crossover}$, which have approximately fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry, arise from the $d_{xy}$-$d_{xy}$ intra-orbital scattering that controls the overall magnetic bandwidth in this material. In addition, we find that the low-energy ($E\approx 6$ meV) spin excitations change from approximate $C_4$ to $C_2$ rotational symmetry below a temperature $T^\ast$ ($>T_s$), while spin excitations at energies above $E_\text{crossover}$ have approximate $C_4$ rotational symmetry and are weakly temperature dependent. These results are consistent with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, where the presence of an uniaxial strain necessary to detwin NaFeAs also raises the onset temperature $T^\ast$ of observable orbital-dependent band splitting to above $T_s$, thus supporting the notion of orbital selective spin waves in the nematic phase of iron-based superconductors.

We have systematically studied the magnetic properties of Cu$_{4-x}$Zn$_x$(OH)$_6$FBr by the neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques. Neutron-diffraction measurements suggest that the long-range magnetic order and the orthorhombic nuclear structure in the $x$ = 0 sample can persist up to $x$ = 0.23 and 0.43, respectively. The temperature dependence of the zero-field (ZF) $μ$SR spectra provide two characteristic temperatures, $T_{A0}$ and $T_λ$. Comparison between $T_{A0}$ and $T_M$ from previously reported magnetic-susceptibility measurements suggest that the former comes from the short-range interlayer-spin clusters that persist up to $x$ = 0.82. On the other hand, the do** level where $T_λ$ becomes zero is about 0.66, which is much higher than threshold of the long-range order, i.e., $\sim$ 0.4. Our results suggest that the change in the nuclear structure may alter the spin dynamics of the kagome layers and a gapped quantum-spin-liquid state may exist above $x$ = 0.66 with the perfect kagome planes.

Magnetic excitations and the spin Hamiltonian of the spin-1 J1-J1-J2 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Experimental data reveal gapped dispersive spin wave excitations in the 3D long-range ordered magnetic state (TC = 16 K), and gapless magnetic excitations above the TC. Simulated magnetic excitations, by using the linear spin wave theory, for a model of coupled trimer spin-chains provide a good description of the observed experimental data. The analysis reveals both ferromagnetic J1 and J2 interactions within the chains, and an antiferromagnetic interchain interaction J3 between chains. The strengths of the J1 and J2 are found to be closer (J2/J1 ~ 0.81), and J3 is determined to be weaker (J3/ J1 ~ 0.69), which is consistent with the spin chain type crystal structure. Presence of a weak single-ion-anisotropy (D/J=0.19) is also revealed. The strengths and signs of exchange interactions explain why the 1/3 magnetization is absent in the studied spin-1 compound CaNi3P4O14 in contrast to its S= 5/2 counterpart Mn based isostructural compound. The signs of the exchange interactions are in agreement with that obtained from the reported DFT calculations, whereas, their strengths are found to be significantly different. The relatively strong value of the J3 in CaNi3P4O14 gives a conventional 3D type magnetic ordering below the TC, however, retains its 1D character above the TC. The present experimental study also reveals a sharp change of single-ion anisotropy across the TC indicating that the stability of the 3D magnetic ordering in CaNi3P4O14 is ascribed to the local magnetic anisotropy in addition to interchain interactions. The present study divulges the importance of full knowledge of the exchange interactions in trimer spin chain compounds to understand their exotic magnetic properties, such as 1/3 magnetization plateau.

We performed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon spin relaxation (μSR) experiments to identify the magnetic ground state of the frustrated quantum A-site spinel, CuAl2O4. Our results verify that the ground state does not exhibit a long-range magnetic ordering, but a glass-like transition manifests at T*=2.3 K. However, the Gaussian shape and the weak longitudinal field dependence of μSR spectra below T* show that the ground state has dynamic spin fluctuations, distinct from those of conventional spin-glasses.
