Prestrained elastic networks arise in a number of biological and technological systems ranging from the cytoskeleton of cells to tensegrity structures. To understand the response of such a network as a function of the prestrain, we consider a minimal model in one dimension. We do this by considering a chain (1D network) of elastic springs upon which a random, zero mean, finite variance prestrain is imposed. Numerical simulations and analytical predictions quantify the magnitude of the contraction as a function of the variance of the prestrain, and show that the chain always shrinks. To test these predictions, we vary the topology of the chain and consider more complex connectivity and show that our results are relatively robust to these changes.

An inverse procedure is developed and tested to recover functional and structural information from global signals of brains activity. The method assumes a leaky-integrate and fire model with excitatory and inhibitory neurons, coupled via a directed network. Neurons are endowed with a heterogenous current value, which sets their associated dynamical regime. By making use of a heterogenous mean-field approximation, the method seeks to reconstructing from global activity patterns the distribution of in-coming degrees, for both excitatory and inhibitory neurons, as well as the distribution of the assigned currents. The proposed inverse scheme is first validated against synthetic data. Then, time-lapse acquisitions of a zebrafish larva recorded with a two-photon light sheet microscope are used as an input to the reconstruction algorithm. A power law distribution of the in-coming connectivity of the excitatory neurons is found. Local degree distributions are also computed by segmenting the whole brain in sub-regions traced from annotated atlas.

An inverse procedure is proposed and tested which aims at recovering the a priori unknown functional and structural information from global signals of living brains activity. To this end we consider a Leaky-Integrate and Fire (LIF) model with short term plasticity neurons, coupled via a directed network. Neurons are assigned a specific current value, which is heterogenous across the sample, and sets the firing regime in which the neuron is operating in. The aim of the method is to recover the distribution of incoming network degrees, as well as the distribution of the assigned currents, from global field measurements. The proposed approach to the inverse problem implements the reductionist Heterogenous Mean-Field approximation. This amounts in turn to organizing the neurons in different classes, depending on their associated degree and current. When tested again synthetic data, the method returns accurate estimates of the sought distributions, while managing to reproduce and interpolate almost exactly the time series of the supplied global field. Finally, we also applied the proposed technique to longitudinal wide-field fluorescence microscopy data of cortical functionality in groups of awake Thy1-GCaMP6f mice. Mice are induced a photothrombotic stroke in the primary motor cortex and their recovery monitored in time. An all-to-all LIF model which accommodates for currents heterogeneity allows to adequately explain the recorded patterns of activation. Altered distributions in neuron excitability are in particular detected, compatible with the phenomenon of hyperexcitability in the penumbra region after stroke.

Network slicing is considered a key enabler to 5th Generation (5G) communication networks. Mobile network operators may deploy network slices -- complete logical networks customized for specific services expecting a certain Quality of Service (QoS). New business models like Network Slice-as-a-Service offerings to customers from vertical industries require negotiated Service Level Agreement (SLA) contracts, and network providers need automated enforcement mechanisms to assure QoS during instantiation and operation of slices. In this paper, we focus on ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). We propose a software architecture for security functions based on off-the-shelf hardware and open-source software and demonstrate, through a series of measurements, that the strict requirements of URLLC services can be achieved. As a real-world example, we perform our experiments using the intrusion prevention system (IPS) Snort to demonstrate the impact of security functions on latency. Our findings lead to the creation of a model predicting the system load that still meets the URLLC latency requirement. We fully disclose the artifacts presented in this paper including pcap traces, measurement tools, and plotting scripts at https://gallenmu.github.io/low-latency.

In the past years statistical physics has been successfully applied for complex networks modelling. In particular, it has been shown that the maximum entropy principle can be exploited in order to construct graph ensembles for real-world networks which maximize the randomness of the graph structure kee** fixed some topological constraint. Such ensembles can be used as null models to detect statistically significant structural patterns and to reconstruct the network structure in cases of incomplete information. Recently, these randomizing methods have been used for the study of self-organizing systems in economics and finance, such as interbank and world trade networks, in order to detect topological changes and, possibly, early-warning signals for the economical crisis. In this work we consider the configuration models with different constraints for the network of mergers and acquisitions (M&As), Comparing triadic and dyadic motifs, for both the binary and weighted M&A network, with the randomized counterparts can shed light on its organization at higher order level.

A procedure is developed and tested to recover the distribution of connectivity of an a priori unknown network, by sampling the dynamics of an ensemble made of reactive walkers. The relative weight between reaction and relocation is gauged by a scalar control parameter, which can be adjusted at will. Different equilibria are attained by the system, following the externally imposed modulation, and reflecting the interplay between reaction and diffusion terms. The information gathered on the observation node is used to predict the stationary density as displayed by the system, via a direct implementation of the celebrated Heterogeneous Mean Field (HMF) approximation. This knowledge translates into a linear problem which can be solved to return the entries of the sought distribution. A variant of the model is then considered which consists in assuming a localized source where the reactive constituents are injected, at a rate that can be adjusted as a stepwise function of time. The linear problem obtained when operating in this setting allows one to recover a fair estimate of the underlying system size. Numerical experiments are carried so as to challenge the predictive ability of the theory.

We suggest one phenomenological model for estimation of the E0 transition nuclear matrix elements. Recently theoretical calculations [1] predicted existence of a 0^{+} state with energy 0.68 MeV in ^{160}Dy nucleus. Powerful enough arguments in favor of existence of 681.3 keV state in ^{160}Dy nucleus are presented.

We construct a one-parameter family of flat currents (a Lax connection) leading to an infinite number of conserved non-local charges, which imply the classical integrability of both sigma-models. In the pure spinor formulation, we use the BRST symmetry to prove the quantum integrability of the sigma-model. We discuss how classical κ-symmetry implies one-loop conformal invariance. We consider the addition of space-filling D-branes to the pure spinor formalism.

The RNS variables map onto a patch of the pure spinor space and the holomorphic top form on the pure spinor space is an essential ingredient of the map**. A basic feature of the map is the requirement of doubling the superspace, which we analyze in detail. We study the structure of the non-critical pure spinor space, which is different from the ten-dimensional one, and its quantum anomalies. We compute the pure spinor lowest lying BRST cohomology and find an agreement with the RNS spectra. The analysis is generalized to curved backgrounds and we construct as an example the non-critical pure spinor type IIA superstring on AdS_4 with RR 4-form flux.
