Dynamic optical sensors, as those based on the reflectivity of isotropic dielectrical interfaces, can be useful for measuring small changes in the refractive index of fluid media. Exact and approximated explicit formulas for their sensitivity are developed. These expressions clarify the influence of each of the constructive parameters of the device, both in partial and in total reflection. It is analytically found that sensitivities are always greater when the angle of incidence approaches the angle of total reflection. It is also demonstrated that close to the critical angle for both types of reflection, the sensitivity of the p mode is greater than that of the s mode.

This work studies the adverse effects, as regards noise, of immersing in water an integrating line piezoelectric detector devoted to optoacoustic imaging. We found that the sensor, in conjunction with the acoustic coupling medium (water), behaves as a resonant dielectric antenna. This phenomenon limits the performance of the system because it efficiently captures unwanted electromagnetic signals. The requirement of good acoustic coupling between the water and the sensor precluded the use of a standard metallic shielding enclosure. Therefore, we resorted to a silver-paint based electrical shield deposited on the detector. This easy-to-implement and low-cost solution significantly increases the signal to noise ratio and does not degrade the acoustic performance. The noise reduction allows the use of a better transimpedance amplifier with higher gain and bandwidth; thus achieving a very sensitive, low-noise detection system.

We found in Homotopy Type Theory (HoTT), a way of representing a first order version of intuitionistic logic (ICL), for intuitionistic calculational logic) where, instead of deduction trees, corresponding linear calculational formats are used as formal proof-tools; and besides this, equality and logical equivalence have preeminence over implication. ICL formalisms had been previously adapted by one of the authors to intuitionistic logic from the classical version of the calculational logic proposed by Dijkstra and Scholten. We formally defined \textit{deductive chains} in HoTT as a representation of the linear formats of ICL. Furthermore, we proved using these deductive chains, that the equational axioms and rules of ICL have counterparts in HoTT. In doing so, we realized that all the induction operators of the basic types in HoTT are actually, homotopic equivalences, fact that we proved in this paper. Additionally, we propose an informal method to find canonical functions between types. We think that these results could lead to a complete restatement of HoTT where equality and homotopic equivalence play a preeminent role. With this approach, and by way of calculational methods, effective and elegant formal proofs in HoTT are possible through the proposed formal deductive chains by way of appropriate formats and notations.

We show that the spin (1/2-) particle from the (1/2,1)+(1,1/2) Lorentz irreducible sector of the four-vector spinor can not be described within a linear formalism but behaves as a genuinely quadratic fermion satisfying the generalized Feynman-Gell-Mann equation with a gyromagnetic factor of (-2/3). In contrast, spin (1/2 +) from the (1/2,0)+(0,1/2) sector is confirmed as a genuine linear Dirac fermion whose gyromagnetic factor takes the value of two units. We calculate Compton scatterings off each one of the two targets and obtain both times well behaved cross sections in the ultra relativistic limit and in accord with unitarity.

We propose a general method for the description of arbitrary single spin-j states transforming according to (j,0)+(0,j) carrier spaces of the Lorentz algebra in terms of Lorentz-tensors for bosons, and tensor-spinors for fermions, and by means of second order Lagrangians. The method allows to avoid the cumbersome matrix calculus and higher \partial^{2j} order wave equations inherent to the Weinberg-Joos approach. We start with reducible Lorentz-tensor (tensor-spinor) representation spaces hosting one sole (j,0)+(0,j) irreducible sector and design there a representation reduction algorithm based on one of the Casimir invariants of the Lorentz algebra. This algorithm allows us to separate neatly the pure spin-j sector of interest from the rest, while preserving the separate Lorentz- and Dirac indexes. However, the Lorentz invariants are momentum independent and do not provide wave equations. Genuine wave equations are obtained by conditioning the Lorentz-tensors under consideration to satisfy the Klein-Gordon equation. In so doing, one always ends up with wave equations and associated Lagrangians that are second order in the momenta. Specifically, a spin-3/2 particle transforming as (3/2,0)+ (0,3/2) is comfortably described by a second order Lagrangian in the basis of the totally antisymmetric Lorentz tensor-spinor of second rank, Ψ_[ μν]. Moreover, the particle is shown to propagate causally within an electromagnetic background. In our study of (3/2,0)+(0,3/2) as part of Ψ_[μν] we reproduce the electromagnetic multipole moments known from the Weinberg-Joos theory. We also find a Compton differential cross section that satisfies unitarity in forward direction. The suggested tensor calculus presents itself very computer friendly with respect to the symbolic software FeynCalc.

HIV dynamic studies have contributed significantly to the understanding of HIV pathogenesis and antiviral treatment strategies for AIDS patients. Establishing the relationship of virologic responses with clinical factors and covariates during long-term antiretroviral (ARV) therapy is important to the development of effective treatments. Medication adherence is an important predictor of the effectiveness of ARV treatment, but an appropriate determinant of adherence rate based on medication event monitoring system (MEMS) data is critical to predict virologic outcomes. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of a number of summary determinants of MEMS adherence rates on virologic response measured repeatedly over time in HIV-infected patients. We developed a mechanism-based differential equation model with consideration of drug adherence, interacted by virus susceptibility to drug and baseline characteristics, to characterize the long-term virologic responses after initiation of therapy. This model fully integrates viral load, MEMS adherence, drug resistance and baseline covariates into the data analysis. In this study we employed the proposed model and associated Bayesian nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach to assess how to efficiently use the MEMS adherence data for prediction of virologic response, and to evaluate the predicting power of each summary metric of the MEMS adherence rates.

(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and map** the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pachón in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$σ$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg$^2$ with $δ<+34.5^\circ$, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, $ugrizy$, covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg$^2$ region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to $r\sim27.5$. The remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. The goal is to make LSST data products, including a relational database of about 32 trillion observations of 40 billion objects, available to the public and scientists around the world.
