The integral Chow ring of weighted blow-ups
Abstract: We give a formula for the integral Chow rings of weighted blow-ups. Along the way, we also compute the integral Chow rings of weighted projective stack bundles, a formula for the Gysin homomorphism of a weighted blow-up, and a generalization of the splitting principle. In addition, in the appendix we compute the Chern class of a weighted blow-up.

Desingularization of binomial varieties using toric Artin stacks
Abstract: We show how the notion of fantastacks can be used to effectively desingularize binomial varieties defined over algebraically closed fields. In contrast to a desingularization via blow-ups in smooth centers, we drastically reduce the number of steps and the number of charts appearing along the process. Furthermore, we discuss how our considerations extend to a partial simultaneous normal crossings… ▽ More

In the first case we show that, if one replaces the threefolds by their canonical covering stacks, the the flop coincides with the moduli stack of perverse point sheaves. This adds to a result of Kawamata showing the derived equivalence. Our construction h… ▽ More

Computations with moduli of perverse point sheaves
Abstract: Given a birational modification $X \to Y$ of complex projective varieties with fiber dimension 1 and rational singularities, consider the main component of Bridgeland's moduli space $W \to Y$ of perverse point sheaves on $X/Y$. We give criteria for the normalization of $W$ to coincide with the transform (flip/flop) $X^+ \to Y$ of $X \to Y$. First, this holds if the exceptional loci of $X \to Y$… ▽ More

Raynaud's group-scheme and reduction of coverings
Abstract: The structure of the reduction of an admissible $G$-covering $Y \to X$ at primes $p$ dividing $|G|$ is investigated. Assume $|G|$ is not divisible by $p^2$ and the $p$-Sylow group is normal. Following Raynaud it is shown that there is a group scheme $\cG$ over the smooth locus of $X$ for which $Y$ is still a principal bundle away from the special points. A structure at the nodes involving Artin… ▽ More

Comments: Results much improved thanks to computations of Romagny, hopefully leading to complete moduli space in joint work in the near future. Added appendix by Lubin, of which this is the fun version. If you want to see the master working in Lubin Tate theory read this - the published version, he threatens, will be cut and dry

Canonical models and stable reduction for plurifibered varieties
Abstract: A cheap method for constructing canonical models and complete moduli for complex projective varieties with a structure called "rational plurifibration" is given. A result about semistable reduction (whose nature is slightly different from alg-geom/9707012) is deduced. The method involves recursive application of moduli stacks of twisted stable maps (math.AG/9908167) and a systematic circumvent… ▽ More

Algebraic orbifold quantum products
Abstract: The purpose of this note is to give an overview of our work on defining algebraic counterparts for W. Chen and Y. Ruan's Gromov-Witten Theory of orbifolds. This work will be described in detail in a subsequent paper. The presentation here is generally based on lectures given by two of us at the Orbifold Workshop in Madison, Wisconsin. Following the spirit of the workshop, we give a nontechnica… ▽ More

Twisted bundles and admissible covers
Abstract: The cherry on top of this stacky paper is the following: for any g>1 we give a finite group G such that the moduli space of connected admissible G-covers of genus g is a smooth, fine moduli space, which is a Galois cover of the moduli space of stable curves. The proof relies on methods introduced by Looijenga and Pikaart-De Jong, and on the theory of twisted G-covers, a theory announced withou… ▽ More

Moduli of twisted spin curves
Abstract: In this note we give a new, natural construction of a compactification of the stack of smooth r-spin curves, which we call the stack of stable twisted $r$-spin curves. This stack is identified with a special case of a stack of twisted stable maps of Abramovich and Vistoli. Realizations in terms of admissible G_m-spaces and Q-line bundles are given as well. The infinitesimal structure of this sta… ▽ More

Compactifying the space of stable maps
Abstract: We define two equivalent notions of twisted stable map from a curve to a Deligne-Mumford stack with projective moduli space, and we prove that twisted stable maps of fixed degree form a complete Deligne-Mumford stack with projective moduli space.

Torification and Factorization of Birational Maps
Abstract: Building on the work of the fourth author in math.AG/9904074, we prove the weak factorization conjecture for birational maps in characteristic zero: a birational map between complete nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero is a composite of blowings up and blowings down with smooth centers. Such a factorization exists which is functorial with respect to… ▽ More

Comments: The previous versions of this paper used Morelli's algorithm for strong factorization of toric birational maps, in which a gap was recently found by K. Karu. In this version we rely only on weak factorization of toric birational maps (due to Wlodarczyk and Morelli). The results remain the same

Complete moduli for families over semistable curves
Abstract: This note is but a research announcement, summarizing and explaining results proven and detailed in forthcoming papers. When one studies families of objects over curves, and the objects are parametrized by a Deligne-Mumford stack M, then the families are equivalent to morphisms of curves into M. In order to have complete moduli for such families, one needs to compactify the stack of stable maps… ▽ More
