The evolution of the entanglement measure during Compton scattering is studied. Our analytical results show that the corresponding measure coincides with the concurrence of the two-qubit state arising after scattering. The state never collapses to a separable one, contrary to what was previously assumed. The behavior of quantum entanglement during scattering is identical to the behavior of initially classically correlated photons up to a constant factor equal to two. This is consistent with local quantum field theory, and "spooky action at a distance" is not required to explain the change in state of nonlocally entangled qubits during the measurement of one of them. Our dedicated experiment with annihilation photons confirms these results and explains the "Puzzle of Decoherence" observed recently.

We present the results of a new experimental study of the quantum entanglement of photon pairs produced in positron-electron annihilation at rest. The experimental setup includes a system of Compton polarimeters to measure the Compton scattering of annihilation photons in entangled and decoherent states. Decoherent states are prepared by pre-scattering of one of the initial photons prior to measurements in polarimeters. For the first time, a direct comparison of the polarization correlations of annihilation photons in the entangled and thus prepared separable states has been carried out. The angular distributions of scattered photons turned out to be the same in both quantum states, which is an unexpected discovery for the quantum-entangled positron emission tomography. Moreover, the correlation function in the Bell's inequality is also the same for entangled and separable states. It follows that, despite numerous measurements in a series of experiments, there is still no experimental proof of the entanglement of annihilation photons. These results are in line with recent theoretical predictions of an identical Compton scattering cross-section for entangled and specific mixed separable quantum states and cast doubt on the universality of the Bell's theorem for testing the entanglement and nonlocality in quantum theory.

An experimental setup for studying the Compton scattering of annihilation photons in various (entangled and decoherent) quantum states is presented. Two entangled $γ$-quanta with an energy of 511 keV and mutually orthogonal polarizations are produced by positron-electron annihilation in a thin aluminum plate and are emitted in opposite directions. To measure both photons, the setup provides two equivalent arms of Compton polarimeters. A Compton polarimeter consists of a plastic scintillation scatterer and an array of NaI(Tl) detectors for measuring photons deflected at an angle of 90$^\circ$. The intermediate scatterer of the GAGG scintillator with SiPM readout is inserted into one of the arms to create a tagged decoherence process prior to the measurement of annihilation photons in polarimeters. The performance of Compton scatterers and NaI(Tl) counters is discussed. The polarization modulation factor and the analyzing power of Compton polarimeters are evaluated from the angular distributions of scattered gammas. The Compton scattering of photons in entangled and decoherent states is compared reliably for the first time.

Sterile neutrinos emerge in minimal extensions of the Standard Model which can solve a number of open questions in astroparticle physics. For example, sterile neutrinos in the keV-mass range are viable dark matter candidates. Their existence would lead to a kink-like distortion in the tritium $β$-decay spectrum. In this work we report about the instrumentation of the Troitsk nu-mass experiment with a 7-pixel TRISTAN prototype detector and measurements in both differential and integral mode. The combination of the two modes is a key requirement for a precise sterile neutrino search, as both methods are prone to largely different systematic uncertainties. Thanks to the excellent performance of the TRISTAN detector at high rates, a sterile neutrino search up to masses of about 6 keV could be performed, which enlarges the previous accessible mass range by a factor of 3. Upper limits on the neutrino mixing amplitude in the mass range < 5.6 keV (differential) and < 6.6 keV (integral) are presented. These results demonstrate the feasibility of a sterile neutrino search as planned in the upgrade of the KATRIN experiment with the final TRISTAN detector and read-out system.

The windowless gaseous tritium source (WGTS) was filled by hydrogen isotopes and served as a target. The total column density was adjusted to form a length of 0.35--0.7 of the electron mean free path. The integral spectrum of scattered electrons was measured by the electrostatic spectrometer with a magnetic adiabatic collimation and relative energy resolution 8.3 10^{-5}. As a result, the shapes of molecular excitation and ionization spectra were extracted for both isotopes. We did not find any difference between hydrogen and deuterium targets. The relative energy dependence was extracted too.

A certain modification of the Geant4 code, making it possible to trace the deexcitation of atomic shells properly, is suggested. Modified Geant4 is able to reproduce a response of particle detectors in detail in the keV energy range. This feature is very important for the laboratory experiments that search for massive sterile neutrinos as well as for dark matter searches that employ direct detection of recoil nuclei. This work demonstrates the reliability of Geant4 simulation at low energies.

The expected signature corresponds to a kink in the electron energy spectrum in tritium beta-decay. The new goal compared to our previous experiment will be precision spectrum measurements well below end point. The experimental installation consists of a windowless gaseous tritium source and a high resolution electromagnetic spectrometer. We estimate that the current bounds on the sterile neutrino mixing parameter can be improved by an order of magnitude in the mass range under 5 keV without major upgrade of the existing equipment. Upgrades of calibration, data acquisition and high voltage systems will allow to improve the bounds by another order of magnitude.

We propose an experiment intended for search for an admixture of sterile neutrino with mass m$_s$ in the range of 1-8 keV that may be detected as specific distortion of the electron energy spectrum during tritium decay. The distortion is spread over large part of the spectrum so to reveal it one can use a detector with relatively poor (near 10-15%) energy resolution. A classic proportional counter is a simple natural choice for a tritium $β$-decay detector. The method we are proposing is original in two respects. First, the counter is produced as a whole from fully-fused quartz tube allowing to measure current pulse directly from anode while providing high stability for a long time. Second, a modern digital acquisition technique can be used in measurements at ultrahigh count rate - up to 10$^6$ Hz. As a result an energy spectrum of tritium electrons containing up to 10$^{12}$ counts may be collected in a month of live time measurements. Due to high statistics an upper limit down to 10$^{-3}$..10$^{-5}$ can be put on sterile neutrino mixing at 95% CL for m$_s$ in the range of 1-8 keV, that will be 1..2 orders of magnitude better then bounds published up to now.
