Utilizing the electron orbital degree of freedom in heterostructures is attracting increasing attention due to the possibility of achieving much larger conversion rates between charge and orbital angular momentum flow compared to the intrinsic electron spin. Here, we consider orbital angular momentum currents in a tight-binding multiorbital lattice model and derive their continuity equation. From it, we observe that the current is not conserved and apply similar considerations to the recently discovered altermagnets. We find nonzero orbital torque terms, elucidate their physical mechanism, and show numerically that they contribute to dampening the orbital angular momentum current flowing in multiorbital heterostructures. Moreover, we compute the orbital RKKY interaction and find it exhibits similar characteristics as the orbital angular momentum current mediating it, thus serving as a direct experimental probe of such currents.

We study superconducting three-band systems within strong-coupling Eliashberg theory. In particular, we search for phase-frustrated superconducting systems with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) states. The emergence of TRSB states in multiband systems has so far been studied using microscopic weak-coupling BCS theory or more phenomenological effective field theories such as multi-component Ginzburg-Landau theories. For systems with three disjoint Fermi surfaces whose electrons experience interactions mediated by phonons, we present a microscopic analysis showing that TRSB states also exist within a strong-coupling microscopic theory. The systems we consider have sizable electron-phonon couplings, putting them into the strong-coupling regime. They are thus a fitting description for strong-coupling materials such as some of the iron pnictides. Moreover, as the TRSB states are challenging to find numerically, we calculate the free energy of multiband systems within strong-coupling theory and make explicit use of it to pin down the TRSB states' elusive nature. Since Eliashberg theory is well incorporated with first-principles calculations, our strong-coupling approach might help facilitate a more efficient search for candidate materials that can exhibit TRSB.

We consider superconductivity in a system with $N$ Fermi surfaces, including intraband and interband effective electron-electron interactions. The effective interaction is described by an $N \times N$ matrix whose elements are assumed to be constant in thin momentum shells around each Fermi surface, giving rise to $s$-wave superconductivity. Starting with attractive intraband interactions in all $N$ bands, we show that too strong interband interactions are detrimental to sustaining $N$ nonzero components of the superconducting order parameter. We find similar results in systems with repulsive intraband interactions. The dimensionality reduction of the order-parameter space is given by the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of the interaction matrix. Using general models and models for superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides and iron pnictides frequently employed in the literature, we show that constraints must be imposed on the order parameter to ensure a lower bound on the free energy and that subsequent higher-order expansions around the global minimum are thermodynamically stable. We also demonstrate that similar considerations are necessary for unconventional pairing symmetries.

We study spin-fluctuation mediated divergent superconducting fluctuations in a Luttinger liquid proximity-coupled to a spin chain. Our study provides insight into how spin fluctuations can induce superconductivity in a strongly correlated non-Fermi liquid with repulsive electronic interactions only. The electrons in the system are governed by the Extended Hubbard Hamiltonian and are coupled to a chain of localized spins modeled by the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $XX$ Hamiltonian. Using a multichannel Luttinger liquid approach, we determine the phase diagram of the metal chain. We find that spin-polarized triplet superconducting correlations persist for repulsive electronic interactions for sufficiently large interchain couplings.

The weighted MAX k-CUT problem consists of finding a k-partition of a given weighted undirected graph G(V,E) such that the sum of the weights of the crossing edges is maximized. The problem is of particular interest as it has a multitude of practical applications. We present a formulation of the weighted MAX k-CUT suitable for running the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) on noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ)-devices to get approximate solutions. The new formulation uses a binary encoding that requires only |V|log_2(k) qubits. The contributions of this paper are as follows: i) A novel decomposition of the phase separation operator based on the binary encoding into basis gates is provided for the MAX k-CUT problem for k >2. ii) Numerical simulations on a suite of test cases comparing different encodings are performed. iii) An analysis of the resources (number of qubits, CX gates) of the different encodings is presented. iv) Formulations and simulations are extended to the case of weighted graphs. For small k and with further improvements when k is not a power of two, our algorithm is a possible candidate to show quantum advantage on NISQ devices.
