Antiferromagnetic order at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 23$ K has been identified in Mn(III)F(salen), salen = H$_{14}$C$_{16}$N$_2$O$_2$, an $S = 2$ linear-chain system. Using single crystals, specific heat studies performed in magnetic fields up to 9 T revealed the presence of a field-independent cusp at the same temperature where $^1$H NMR studies conducted at 42 MHz observed dramatic changes in the spin-lattice relaxation time, $T_1$, and in the linewidths. Neutron powder diffraction performed on a randomly-oriented, as-grown, deuterated (12 of 14 H replaced by d) sample of 2.2 g at 10 K and 100 K did not resolve the magnetic ordering, while low-field (less than 0.1 T) magnetic susceptibility studies of single crystals and randomly-arranged microcrystalline samples reveal subtle features associated with the transition. Ensemble these data suggest a magnetic signature previously detected at 3.8 T for temperatures below nominally 500 mK is a spin-flop field of small net moments arising from alternating subsets of three Mn spins along the chains.

The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behavior in Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$.

In particular, we report on a minimum of the gap in the vicinity of the saturation field $H_{sat}=48.5$ T associated with a transition from the sine-Gordon region (with soliton-breather elementary excitations) to a spin-polarized state (with magnon excitations). This interpretation is fully confirmed by the quantitative agreement over the entire field range of the experimental data with the DMRG investigation of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with a staggered transverse field.

Low-energy magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 chain compound (C$_6$H$_9$N$_2$)CuCl$_3$ [known as (6MAP)CuCl$_3$] are probed by means of tunable-frequency electron spin resonance. Two modes with asymmetric (with respect to the $hν=gμ_B B$ line) frequency-field dependences are resolved, illuminating the striking incompatibility with a simple uniform $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain model. The unusual ESR spectrum is explained in terms of the recently developed theory for spin-1/2 chains, suggesting the important role of next-nearest-neighbor interactions in this compound. Our conclusion is supported by model calculations for the magnetic susceptibility of (6MAP)CuCl$_3$, revealing a good qualitative agreement with experiment.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-ladder material (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ [BPCB] are probed by high-resolution multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Our experiments provide a direct evidence for a biaxial anisotropy ($\sim 5\%$ of the dominant exchange interaction), that is in contrast to a fully isotropic spin-ladder model employed for this system previously. It is argued that this anisotropy in BPCB is caused by spin-orbit coupling, which appears to be important for describing magnetic properties of this compound. The zero-field zone-center gap in the excitation spectrum of BPCB, $Δ_0/k_{B}=16.5$ K, is detected directly. Furthermore, an ESR signature of the inter-ladder exchange interactions is obtained. The detailed characterization of the anisotropy in BPCB completes the determination of the full spin hamiltonian of this exceptional spin-ladder material and shows ways to study anisotropy effects in spin ladders.

We report on high-field magnetization, specific-heat and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet [Cu(pyz)2(HF2)]PF6. The frequency-field diagram of ESR modes below TN = 4.38 K is described in the frame of the meanfield theory, confirming a collinear magnetic structure with an easy-plane anisotropy. The obtained results allowed us to determine the anisotropy/exchange interaction ratio, A/J = 0.003, and the upper limit for the inter/intra-plane exchange-interaction ratio, J'/J = 1/16. It is argued that despite the onset of 3D long-range magnetic ordering the magnetic properties of this material (including high-magnetic-field magnetization and non-monotonic field dependence of the Neel temperature) are strongly affected by two-dimensional spin correlations.

Specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, spanning low temperatures ($T \geq 40$ mK) and high magnetic fields ($B \leq 14$ T), have been performed on a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnet Cu(tn)Cl$_{2}$ (tn = C$_{3}$H$_{10}$N$_{2}$). The compound represents an $S = 1/2$ spatially anisotropic triangular magnet realized by a square lattice with nearest-neighbor ($J/k_{B} = 3$ K), frustrating next-nearest-neighbor ($0 < J^{\prime}/J < 0.6$), and interlayer ($|J^{\prime \prime}/J| \approx 10^{-3}$) interactions. The absence of long-range magnetic order down to $T = $ 60 mK in $B = 0$ and the $T^{2}$ behavior of the specific heat for $T \leq 0.4$ K and $B \geq 0$ are considered evidence of high degree of 2D magnetic order. In fields lower than the saturation field, $B_{\text{sat}} = 6.6$ T, a specific heat anomaly, appearing near 0.8 K, is ascribed to bound vortex-antivortex pairs stabilized by the applied magnetic field. The resulting magnetic phase diagram is remarkably consistent with the one predicted for the ideal square lattice, except that $B_{\text{sat}}$ is shifted to values lower than expected. Potential explanations for this observation, as well as the possibility of a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in a spatially anisotropic triangular magnet with the Néel ground state, are discussed.

From the analysis of the frequency-field dependence of magnetic excitations in NENB, the spin-Hamiltonian parameters were calculated, yielding Delta = 17.4 K, g_parallel = 2.14, D = 7.5 K, and |E| = 0.7 K for the Haldane gap, g factor and the crystal-field anisotropy constants, respectively. The presence of fractional S = 1/2 chain-end states, revealed by ESR and magnetization measurements, is found to be responsible for spin-glass freezing effects. In addition, extra states in the excitation spectrum of NENB have been observed in the vicinity of the Haldane gap, which origin is discussed.

The magnetocaloric effect of polycrystalline samples of pure and Y-doped dipolar spin ice Dy2Ti2O7 was investigated at temperatures from nominally 0.3 K to 6 K and in magnetic fields of up to 2 T. As well as being of intrinsic interest, it is proposed that the magnetocaloric effect may be used as an appropriate tool for the qualitative study of slow relaxation processes in the spin ice regime. In the high temperature regime the temperature change on adiabatic demagnetization was found to be consistent with previously published entropy versus temperature curves. At low temperatures (T < 0.4 K) cooling by adiabatic demagnetization was followed by an irreversible rise in temperature that persisted after the removal of the applied field. The relaxation time derived from this temperature rise was found to increase rapidly down to 0.3 K. The data near to 0.3 K indicated a transition into a metastable state with much slower relaxation, supporting recent neutron scattering results. In addition, magnetic dilution of 50 % concentration was found to significantly prolong the dynamical response in the milikelvin temperature range, in contrast with results reported for higher temperatures at which the spin correlations are suppressed. These observations are discussed in terms of defects and loop correlations in the spin ice state.

A magneto-optically active thin film of Rb$_{j}$Co$_{k}$[Fe(CN)$_{6}$]$_{l}$ $\cdot$$n$H$_{2}$O has been prepared using a sequential assembly method. Upon irradiation with light and at 5 K, the net magnetization of the film increased when the surface of the film was oriented parallel to the external magnetic field of 0.1 T. However, when the surface of the film was perpendicular to the field, the net magnetization \emph{decreased} upon irradiation. The presence of dipolar fields and the low-dimensional nature of the system are used to describe the orientation dependence of the photo-induced magnetization. The ability to increase or decrease the photo-induced magnetization by changing the orientation of the system with respect to the field is a new phenomenon that may be useful in future device applications.

Experimental and numerical studies of the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat and magnetization of single crystals of CsNiF3 have been performed at 2.4 K, 2.9 K, and 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 9 T oriented perpendicular to the easy plane. The experimental results confirm the presence of the theoretically predicted double peak structure in the specific heat arising from the formation of nonlinear spin modes. The demagnetizing effects are found to be negligible, and the overall agreement between the data and numerical predictions is better than reported for the case when the magnetic field was oriented in the easy plane. Demagnetizing effects might play a role in generating the difference observed between theory and experiment in previous work analyzing the excess specific heat using the sine-Gordon model.

Er_2Ti_2O_7 has been suggested to be a realization of the frustrated < 111 > XY pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet, for which theory predicts fluctuation-induced symmetry breaking in a highly degenerate ground state manifold. We present a theoretical analysis of the classical model compared to neutron scattering experiments on the real material, both below and above T_N = 1.173(2) K. The model correctly predicts the ordered magnetic structure, suggesting that the real system has order stabilised by zero-point quantum fluctuations that can be modelled by classical spin wave theory. However, the model fails to describe the excitations of the system, which show unusual features.
