Search for a heavy neutrino in $τ$ decays at Belle

Abstract: We report on a search for a heavy neutrino in the decays $τ^- \to π^- ν_h$, $ν_h \to π^\pm \ell-+$, $\ell = e, μ$. The results are obtained using the full data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider. A sequence of multivariate selections and strict particle identification requirements produce a higher signal purity and a better statistical sensitivity per unit luminosity than previous LHCb lepton universality tests using the same decay modes. Residual backgrounds due to misidentified hadronic decays are studied using data and included in the fit model. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given $q^2$ interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. Abstract: We present a search for the lepton-flavour-violating decays $B^+ \to K^+ τ^\pm \ell^\mp$, with $\ell = (e, μ)$, using the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Abstract: Using the entire data sample of $980\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider, we report the measurement of the mass, width, and the relative branching ratios of the $Λ_c(2625)^+$ charmed baryon. The mass difference between $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and $Λ_c^+$ is measured to be $M(Λ_c(2625)^{+}) - M(Λ_c^{+}) = 341.518 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.049\ \mathrm{MeV}/\mathit{c}^2$. The upper limit on the width is measured to be $Γ(Λ_c(2625)^+) < 0.52\,\mathrm{MeV}/\textit{c}^2$ at 90\% credibility level. Based on a full Dalitz plot fit, branching ratios with respect to the mode $Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-$ are measured to be $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{0} π^{+})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.19 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.40) \%$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{++} π^{-})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.13 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.32) \%$. First observation of a doubly charged tetraquark and its neutral partner

The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content $[c\bar{s}u\bar{d}]$, and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of $[c\bar{s}\bar{u}d]$ quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity $0^+$, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet. △ Less

Reconstruction of $B \to ρ\ell ν_\ell$ decays identified using hadronic decays of the recoil $B$ meson in 2019 -- 2021 Belle II data

Abstract: We present results on the semileptonic decays $B^0 \to ρ^- \ell^+ ν_\ell$ and $B^+ \to ρ^0 \ell^+ ν_\ell$ in a sample corresponding to 189.9/fb of Belle II data at the SuperKEKB $e^- e^+$ collider. Signal decays are identified using full reconstruction of the recoil $B$ meson in hadronic final states. The sum of the $D^0$ and ${\overline D^0}$ production cross-section in $p$Ne collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range $y^{\star}\in [-2.29, 0]$ is found to be $σ_{D^{0}}^{y^\star \in [-2.29, 0]} = 48.2 \pm 0.3 \pm 4.5 \,μ\textrm{b/nucleon}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The $D^0-{\overline D^0}$ production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative $y^{\star}$. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1$\%$ intrinsic charm and 10$\%$ recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered. △ Less

Abstract: We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions for $B \to \bar{D}^{(*)}π\ell^+ν_\ell$ and $B \to \bar{D}^{(*)}π^+π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ relative to $B \to \bar{D}^*\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays with $\ell = e, μ$. First observation of the $B^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ D_s^- K^+$ decay

The mass, width and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be $3956\pm5\pm10$ MeV, $43\pm13\pm8$ MeV and $J^{PC}=0^{++}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of $c\bar{c}s\bar{s}$ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the $D_s^+ D_s^-$ invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the $0^{++}$ assignment or by a $J/ψφ\leftrightarrow D_s^+ D_s^-$ coupled-channel effect. △ Less

The decay is observed with more than $10$ standard deviations and the time-integrated ratio of branching fractions is determined to be \begin{align*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})} = 0.269 \pm 0.032 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008\, , \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of the fragmentation fraction ratio $f_s/f_d$. The $B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ branching fraction is calculated to be \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}) = (2.15 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.16)\times 10^{-4} \,, \end{align*} where the fourth uncertainty is due to the $B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$branching fraction. These results are calculated using the average $B^0_s$ meson lifetime in simulation. Correction factors are reported for scenarios where either a purely heavy or a purely light $B^0_s$ eigenstate is considered. △ Less

We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $η_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty. △ Less

Combining with the world average $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0)$, we have the absolute branching fractions: $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0K_S^0) = {(2.35\pm 0.12\pm 0.07 \pm 0.12 )\times 10^{-4}}$ and $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0η) = {(4.35\pm 0.10\pm 0.20 \pm 0.22 )\times 10^{-3}}$. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the uncertainty on $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0)$. The mode $Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0K_S^0$ is observed for the first time and has a statistical significance of $>\!10σ$. The branching fraction of $Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0η$ has been measured with a threefold improvement in precision over previous results and is found to be consistent with the world average. △ Less

Abstract: We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow π^+ π^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ π^0$. Using $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0}=(1.25 \pm 0.10)\%$, we obtain $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η}=(3.14 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.25)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'}=(4.16 \pm 0.75 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.33)\times10^{-3}$. Here the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0}$, respectively. The ratio of the branching fraction of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$ with respect to that of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'}/\mathcal{B}_{Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η}=1.34 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06$. We update the asymmetry parameter of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ π^0$, $α_{Σ^+ π^0} = -0.48 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.02$, with a considerably improved precision. The asymmetry parameters of $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η$ and $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ η'$ are measured to be $α_{Σ^+ η} = -0.99 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05$ and $α_{Σ^+ η'} = -0.46 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$ for the first time. △ Less

The first results of direct $C\!P$ asymmetry in two-body singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decays of charmed baryons are measured, $A_{C\!P}^{\rm{dir}}(Λ_c^+\toΛK^+)\!=\!+0.021\pm0.026\pm0.001$ and $A_{C\!P}^{\rm{dir}}(Λ_c^+\toΣ^0K^+)\!=\!+0.025\pm0.054\pm0.004$. We also make the most precise measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters ($α$) for the four modes of interest and search for $C\!P$ violation via the $α$-induced $C\!P$ asymmetry ($A_{C\!P}^α$). We measure $A_{C\!P}^α(Λ_c^+\toΛK^+)\!=\!{-0.023\pm0.086\pm0.071}$ and $A_{C\!P}^α(Λ_c^+\toΣ^0K^+)\!=\!{+0.08\pm 0.35\pm 0.14}$, which are the first $A_{C\!P}^α$ results for SCS decays of charmed baryons. We search for $Λ$-hyperon $C\!P$ violation in $Λ_c^+\to(Λ,\,Σ^0)π^+$ and find $A_{C\!P}^α(Λ\to pπ^{-})\!=\!{+0.013\pm0.007\pm0.011}$. This is the first time that hyperon $C\!P$ violation has been measured via Cabibbo-favored charm decays. No evidence of baryon $C\!P$ violation is found. We also obtain the most precise branching fractions for two SCS $Λ_c^+$ decays, $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\toΛK^+)\!=\!(6.57\pm0.17\pm0.11\pm0.35)\times10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\toΣ^0K^+)\!=\!(3.58\pm0.19\pm0.06\pm0.19)\times10^{-4}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic, while the third uncertainties come from the uncertainties on the world average branching fractions of $Λ_c^+\to(Λ,\,Σ^0)π^+$. △ Less

We analyze the process $ γγ\rightarrow χ_{c2}(1P) \rightarrow J/ψγ$, $J/ψ\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ $(\ell = e \ {\rm or} \ μ)$ using a data sample of 971 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. In this analysis, the product of the two… ▽ More We report the measurement of the two-photon decay width of $χ_{c2}(1P)$ in two-photon processes at the Belle experiment. We analyze the process $ γγ\rightarrow χ_{c2}(1P) \rightarrow J/ψγ$, $J/ψ\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ $(\ell = e \ {\rm or} \ μ)$ using a data sample of 971 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^-$ decays. Furthermore, we report a new QCD factorization test based on the measured ratios for $\bar{B} \to D^{*+}h^-$ and $\bar{B} \to D^{*+}\ell^-ν$ decays at squared momentum transfer values equivalent to the mass of the $h = π$ or $K$ hadron. The parameters $|a_1(h)|$ are measured to be $|a_1(π)|= 0.884 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.016$ and $|a_1(K)|=0.913 \pm 0.019 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.013$, where the last uncertainties account for all external inputs. These values are approximately $15\%$ lower than those expected from theoretical predictions. Subsequently, flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry is tested by measuring the ratios for pions and kaons, $|a_1(K)|^2/ |a_1(π)|^2=1.066 \pm 0.042 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.023$, as well as for different particle species. The ratio is consistent with unity and therefore no evidence for $SU(3)$ symmetry breaking effects is found at the $5\%$ precision level. △ Less

Angular analysis of $B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays reconstructed in 2019, 2020, and 2021 Belle II data

Abstract: We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance an… ▽ More We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays reported by Belle II. △ Less

The results are based on a data sample that contains $772\times10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The measured overall branching fraction and the direct $CP$ asymmetry are $(5.38\pm0.40\pm0.35)\times 10^{-6}$ and $-0.170\pm0.073\pm0.017$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. △ Less

The $Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} $ candidates are reconstructed via their decay to $Λ_{c}^{+} π^{\mp}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ decays to $pK^{-}π^{+},~pK_{S}^{0},$ and $Λπ^{+}$ final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0} π^{+} \bar{p}) = (1.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.07)\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++} π^{-} \bar{p}) = (1.84\pm 0.11 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}$, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the $M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{\pm}}$ spectrum with a significance of $4.2σ$ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited $Λ_{c}^{+}$ and is tentatively named $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$. Its mass and width are measured to be $(2913.8 \pm 5.6 \pm 3.8)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $(51.8\pm20.0 \pm 18.8)$ MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times{\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}) = (9.5 \pm 3.6 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c} (2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times {\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}) = (1.24 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$. Search for $X(3872)\toπ^+π^-π^0$ at Belle

The signal yields with statistical uncertainties are $22\pm 6$, $18 \pm 6$, and $38 \pm 9$ for the decays $B \to K^{\ast}(892)μ^+μ^-$, $B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-$, and $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$, respectively. We measure the branching fractions of these decays for the entire range of the dilepton mass, excluding the very low mass region to suppress the $B \to K^{\ast}(892)γ(\to e^+e^-)$ background and regions compatible with decays of charmonium resonances, to be \begin{equation} {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)μ^+μ^-) = (1.19 \pm 0.31 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-) = (1.42 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-) = (1.25 \pm 0.30 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, \end{equation} where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Measurement of the branching fractions for Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^{+}\to K^{+} K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_{(s)}^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$ at Belle

Abstract: We present measurements of the branching fractions for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^+\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$, and the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$, based on 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure these modes relative to the Cabibbo-favored modes… ▽ More We present measurements of the branching fractions for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^+\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$, and the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$, based on 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure these modes relative to the Cabibbo-favored modes $D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}$. Our results for the ratios of branching fractions are $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}) = (11.32 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.26)\%$, $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}) = (1.68 \pm 0.11\pm 0.03)\%$, and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}) = (17.13 \pm 0.62 \pm 0.51)\%$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The second value corresponds to $(5.83\pm 0.42)\times\tan^4θ_C$, where $θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle; this value is larger than other measured ratios of branching fractions for a doubly Cabibbo-suppressed charm decay to a Cabibbo-favored decay. Multiplying these results by world average values for $B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0})$ and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})$ yields $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})= (7.08\pm 0.08\pm 0.16\pm 0.20)\times10^{-3}$, $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})= (1.05\pm 0.07\pm 0.02\pm 0.03)\times10^{-3}$, and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}) = (9.44\pm 0.34\pm 0.28\pm 0.32)\times10^{-3}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the normalization mode. The first two results are consistent with, but more precise than, the current world averages. The last result is the first measurement of this branching fraction. △ Less

Evidence for modification of $b$ quark hadronization in high-multiplicity $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Abstract: The production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ mesons relative to $B^{0}$ mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV over the forward rapidity interval $2<y<4.5$ as a function of the charged particle multiplicity measured in the event. Evidence at the 3.4$σ$ level is found for an increase of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^{0}$ cross-sections wit… ▽ More The production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ mesons relative to $B^{0}$ mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV over the forward rapidity interval $2<y<4.5$ as a function of the charged particle multiplicity measured in the event. Evidence at the 3.4$σ$ level is found for an increase of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^{0}$ cross-sections with multiplicity at transverse momenta below 6 GeV/$c$, with no significant multiplicity dependence at higher transverse momentum. Comparison with data from $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions implies that the density of the hadronic medium may affect the production rates of $B$ mesons. This is qualitatively consistent with the emergence of quark coalescence as an additional hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity collisions. △ Less
